Our verdict

Puerto Pollensa is hands-down one of the most recommended holiday destinations in Spain on the Mumsnet forums - and this peaceful villa offers the perfect base from which to explore the popular coastal town. With impressive views of the sea and surrounding mountains in the north of Mallorca, this two-bedroom villa is just 2km from the nearest beach and a 10-minute drive from Puerto Pollensa.

Villa C’an Moscard boasts a lush garden with a decent-sized private pool, BBQ and kids’ play area. You could easily spend your time kicking back in the grounds - the large shaded terrace will keep families cool in the heat - but it’s well worth exploring the local area to squeeze in some beach time, culture and tapas.

From Puerto del Carmen you can walk along the coast to Caleta which is a lovely spot, have a drink and get the water taxi back.

This collection of two- and three-bedroom villas has a fab location near the Mumsnet-favourite town of Puerto del Carmen. Just a 20-minute drive from the airport and a 15-minute stroll from the Old Town harbour, Alondra Villas offers a stylish base from which to explore Lanzarote's buzzy south coast, and its hilltop setting offers breathtaking coastal views.

We've stayed in Son Bou many times, usually up the hill, or in the Torre Soli Nou area. If you choose carefully, you can get a villa with a wonderful view. Depending where you stay, it's a fairly easy walk to restaurants and bars. It''s a bit further to the beach, but not too far. The walk back is uphill though, so can be a bit tougher, depending on the age and fitness of the adults, and the location of the villa!

Our verdict

If you’re travelling as part of a larger group, this pair of properties located in a quiet spot on Menorca's south coast is an excellent pick for a quiet, peaceful escape.

A stay here puts you around a mile from Son Bou, a small family-friendly resort that's home to the island's longest beach, where you'll find shallow waters - perfect for bathing with kids.

Each villa has three bedrooms sleeping up to six guests and comes with a garden and a private pool complete with built-in whirlpool bath. The price includes a weekly housekeeping service.

If a rustic, characterful villa set in a peaceful olive grove with a decent sized pool is your idea of a blissful family holiday (and we can’t say we blame you!) then Casa Carpia is an ideal location.

The antique furniture and woven baskets give the villa a traditional Spanish feel and there’s an outdoor dining area as well as sun loungers overlooking a tranquil olive grove. Kids will love the large pool, and there are plenty of towns nearby to explore, including the historic Ronda.

Our verdict

Live like a local (for a week or two) at this traditional stone villa in a secluded mountainside spot on Spain's Costa del Sol. Villa Cortijo Trivino is a couple of miles from the pretty town of Frigiliana with its Moorish old quarter and whitewashed buildings.

Sleeping up to five guests in three bedrooms, this characterful house comes with a private pool and sun terrace with parasols and sunbeds. There's an open-plan living area and an elevated dining terrace where the spectacular views have to be seen to be believed.

On Menorca's southwest coast, Villas del Lago is a small group of whitewashed apartments with private pools. The villas sit right next to the yacht- and restaurant-studded El Lago marina and the location puts you within a five-minute walk of the nearest beach.

The traditional whitewashed villas are petite but fully equipped with mod cons including a kitchen and a dining area. Each has three bedrooms and sleeps up to six people. Check-in takes place at the neighbouring Lago Resort where you can also dine at the hotel’s Fiesta restaurant.

Perfect beach for little ones, wide, sandy and calm. A couple of playgrounds on the beach.

Our verdict

Just a short 20-minute stroll from the popular resort of Calahonda lies a choice of two whitewashed villas - Casa Chica I and Casa Chica II. Both villas sleep up to 6 comfortably and include a private pool sunken into the generous garden grounds on-site.

A great pick for keen golfers, the location is a stone’s throw from several picturesque golf courses, and of course being located on the Costa del Sol, the golden sandy beaches and year-round sunshine is a given.

Another great option if you’re travelling with extended family or as part of a larger group and want to get two villas next door - but if not, each villa is separate to ensure total privacy.
