Love them or hate them, the best changing robes are warm, waterproof and roomy, whether you're wild swimming in a windswept lake or on the school run in the driving rain. I wear one regularly when swimming in the sea near my home on the Sussex coast, and after testing some of the UK's most-recommended changing robes, I found a clear winner that stands out from the crowd.

Changing robes are even becoming the winter coat of choice for more and more Mumsnet users, challenging even the best heated gilets in the outdoor cosiness stakes. "I use it as a changing robe and I absolutely use it on the sidelines," says Mumsnet user Wavesandtrees. "Have been watching my kids play sport in it for five years and it is the best thing I ever did. The years before that I was cold, wet and miserable!"

With so many alternatives to the original Dryrobe®, it's hard to know which one to go for. Are Dryrobes really the best changing robes, or do any of the dupes give them a run for their money? I headed to the Mumsnet forums to find out which waterproof changing robes real women recommend for swimming, dog walking and sports, then I put them to the test.

How we tested the best changing robes

Journalist Poppy O'Neill testing the UK's best changing robes

My first port of call was the Mumsnet Talk forums, where I found dozens of threads and countless authentic, unfiltered reviews of different changing robes. I analysed the brands and styles recommended, cross-referenced these with expert recommendations and consumer trends, then used my findings to create a longlist of 15 swim robes.

I then took to the wider internet, sourcing customer reviews and expert recommendations, as well as canvassing opinion from MNHQ. Armed with this broad range of experiences and opinions, I whittled my list down to eight, and personally tested six of the most highly-rated changing robes, with Mumsnet editors Laura Westerman and Rebecca Roberts reviewing two more.

As I live five minutes from the sea, I put six changing robes to the test after a dip in the English Channel, which had an average temperature of 9°C when I tested the changing robes in April 2025. To provide a range of perspectives and conditions, Laura and Rebecca tested changing robes over the course of many chilly swims in outdoor pools with their young children. We assessed and scored changing robes based on:

  • Warmth

  • Absorbency

  • Quality

  • Style

Once I had all the testing notes and scores, I narrowed my list down to only the very best changing robes, weighing up authentic recommendations from the Mumsnet forums, cross-comparing them and carefully selecting the best changing robes to buy in 2025.

Other brands are available but if you’re actually going to use the robe for sea based activities the Dryrobe is the GOAT.

They are amazingly warm and waterproof. So cosy. I love mine for wet dog walks!

Crucially it can fit on top of another coat - very useful when it gets really cold! But a) I did originally get it for vaguely athletic related reasons b) I am old and DGAF. The thing is, they're built like tanks and last forever, so I'm sure I'm not the only one who got one when they were very active and years later, old and frayed, still have it!

I wear mine at DS' football matches. I wouldn't just wear it randomly as a coat though, unless the weather was particularly bad and I was going to be standing around outside for a long time.

Tested by Mumsnet editor Laura Westerman: Read our full Dryrobe review

The robe that spawned a thousand dupes, the Dryrobe® is undoubtedly the most highly-recommended changing robe on the Mumsnet forums. At £175, it's expensive, I thought the quality of its construction and materials do justify the price point.

There are a huge 18 colourways to browse - from bright camo to more subtle black or colourblock pink. Most importantly, the outer is genuinely waterproof and the lining, which Dryrobe® describes as 'synthetic lambswool', is super warm, especially after a bracing outdoor swimming session with my 2-year-old.

Dryrobes are very roomy inside, so it left me plenty of space to get changed while keeping my dignity and avoiding frostbite. Its oversized design also meant it fits over another coat, or several jumpers, making them a godsend for dog walking in all weathers or standing on a drizzly touchline.

The big debate on the forum is whether they're acceptable as an everyday coat, with most Mumsnet users taking a nuanced approach. "I use mine mostly for camping and paddle boarding but I have used it as a coat in really bad weather. I wouldn't go to the pub in it as it's bulky but running errands then yes," says pucezigzag. I agree, and would wear the Dryrobe as a coat, especially as I opted for the black colourway with grey fleece lining, which is neutral enough for me to use as a regular coat during the colder months.

If you're looking for a Dryrobe-esque changing robe but don't want to spend too much, this one from Osprey is a brilliant dupe.

We particularly like that the sizing for the Osprey Changing Robe includes kids from age 10 and up. Available in 5 understated colours and with a sportier look than the other changing robes on this list, I asked my teens if they'd wear this changing robe, and got the thumbs up from both my son and daughter.

Lined in extremely cosy Sherpa fleece, with a waterproof outer and waterproof inner pocket, it does the job of a changing robe very well. It's pretty oversized, so there's plenty of room to get changed underneath.

I found the faux fur fleece lining cosy but not very absorbent, and it clung to me on my walk home from the beach.

Its so warm and good value. Haven't tried it out using for outdoor swimming yet but its lovely going to and from the swimming pool. I'd been trying to buy one for a few years but was always put off by the price, dodgy colour combinations or huge logos. Not problem with this one, love it.

Tested by Mumsnet editor Poppy O'Neill: Read our full Two Bare Feet Elemental Changing Robe review

Of all the changing robes I've tested, the Two Bare Feet Elemental is the most lightweight and the least bulky. The outer is tough and weatherproof, with a smooth, rubber-like feel; and the lining is soft Sherpa fleece.

It's 100% wind-and waterproof, with fully sealed seams and fleece-lined outer pockets. So, even though it's lighter to wear and carry around, TBF haven't scrimped when it comes to warmth and weatherproofing.

There are ten colours to choose from, and minimal branding the robe. There's a waterproof, zip-closed pocket inside, with room to store your phone and keys - plus a little notch for wired earphones to thread through.

I did find the Sherpa fleece stuck to my legs when my skin was wet, but other than that I was very impressed by this bargain buy. If you're looking for a changing robe that isn't quite as oversized, this is a great shout.

I bought ds one from Regatta for rugby - it's brilliant.

Our verdict

Whether your kids are into swimming, rugby or just getting soggy in the great outdoors, a changing robe designed for kids like this one from Regatta will come in handy more often than you'd think. Imagine one of these waiting in the car after an impromptu tree climbing session or an unexpectedly muddy dog walk - not only will they keep your kids warm, they'll also go some way to containing the mess and damp.

Just like adult styles, the Regatta Junior Changing Robe is available in bright prints or plain black. While they're probably too bulky for a school coat (good luck fitting one of these in a locker), this changing robe is waterproof and lined with cosy borg fleece, so it makes an excellent coat for outdoor adventures.

It's worth bearing in mind that the long, oversized fit means this changing robe could swamp some kids, so do check the size chart before you buy.

Rapanui Women's Changing Robe

  • Absorbent, quick dry lining

Our verdict

Tested by Mumsnet editor Poppy O'Neill: Read our full Rapanui Women's Changing Robe review

Coated in nature-friendly SmartRepel Hydro coating that's free from nasty harmful chemicals, this changing robe from Mumsnetter favourite Rapanui has only the highest eco credentials. While most changing robes are lined with cosy but less absorbent fleece, this one is lined with absorbent organic cotton towelling, which I really appreciated against my skin after a swim in the sea.

The minimal branding (there's just a small Rapanui label on one of the outer pockets) and natural fabrics meant this was my favourite changing robe I tested when it came to looks and how it felt to wear. Unfortunately, what this one gains in style points it loses in waterproofing and warmth. However, I tend to swim in the sea during the warmer months, and whereas the other changing robes on this list provided exceptional warmth and weatherproofing, personally I don't tend to venture into the sea on days when I need that level of protection.

The Rapanui Changing Robe provides just the right amount of warmth and coverage after a cold dip on a mild spring day, so if you're more of a fair weather sea swimmer than a hardcore Boxing Day ice bath fan, it'll probably suit you down to the ground.

My daughter has the Frostfire Moonwrap to keep her warm after playing rugby. On really cold days I pop a hot water bottle in it so she can warm up quickly in the car. It is fantastic.

There are many other similar makes of changing robes on the market these days. I have a Frostfire Moonwrap, which can be found for £70-£90ish. I use it for warming up and changing after sea swims all year round, and it is v similar in design to my swimming friends' Dryrobes (and just as good).

Our verdict

Tested by Mumsnet editor Poppy O'Neill

With its roomy sleeves, the Frostfire Moonwrap has a slightly different design to the other changing robes on this list. That extra space at the cuffs allows for easier layering underneath, and I found changing into and out of my swimming costume easy, as the generous sleeves meant I didn't have to wriggle my hands through any tight spaces.

That's not to say that there's a draught up your arms, though. The sleeves are both elasticated and have a Velcro cuff, so you can batten down the hatches to keep out the cold.

The large hood is lined with the same absorbent faux fur as the rest of the changing robe, so you can use it dry off your hair - it's also nicely structured so it stays up, which is a big bonus for me. Testing it on a blustery day at the beach, I could really feel the strength of the 100% waterproof and windproof outer - nothing was getting through this tough changing robe.

What is a changing robe?

A changing robe is a loose-fitting, oversized garment designed to provide warmth, coverage, and privacy when changing clothes outdoors. Typically made from waterproof or insulated materials, changing robes are popular among swimmers, surfers, paddleboarders and outdoor enthusiasts who need to change in public spaces or protect themselves from the elements. They often feature a hood, fleece lining, and wide sleeves to make changing easier while keeping the wearer warm and dry.

What to look for when choosing a changing robe

Even a budget changing robe will set you back around £50, so it's wise to research your options and get some tried-and-tested recommendations before you buy. Here's what to look out for in a great changing robe:

  • Style: changing robes envelop your whole body and outfit, so it makes sense to buy one that suits your style. There are a myriad of colourful, patterned and plain options available, so shop around to find the perfect changing robe for you.

  • Waterproofing: True waterproofing is essential, especially for cold weather activities like swimming or surfing. Many cheaper alternatives are only water-resistant, which might not be sufficient for prolonged exposure to wet conditions.

  • Warmth: The robe's lining plays a significant role in warmth. Some Mumsnetters prefer fleece lining for its cosiness, while others find it sticks to wet skin, making changing difficult. Towel lining is good for drying off, but might not be warm enough in cold weather. Consider the climate and intended use when choosing the lining.

  • Size and Fit: Roominess is crucial if you plan to change underneath the robe. However, it shouldn't be so big that it's cumbersome or trips you up. Check the sizing charts carefully, especially if you're petite. Some Mumsnet users prefer to use a separate towel for changing and then put the changing robe on over their clothes.

  • Logo Size: Many of our users dislike the large, prominent logos on some brands, finding them too "billboard-like." Consider the brand's logo design if it's a concern for you.

Do I need a changing robe for wild swimming?

A changing robe isn’t essential for wild swimming, but it can be incredibly useful, especially in colder weather. It provides warmth and protection from the elements while you change, helping to prevent heat loss after being in cold water.

Many wild swimmers find a waterproof, fleece-lined changing robe particularly beneficial in winter, while a lightweight version can offer privacy and convenience in milder conditions. If you regularly swim in remote locations without changing facilities or need extra warmth post-swim, a changing robe can be a worthwhile investment. However, a large towel or dry clothes layered quickly can also do the job if you're on a budget.

What's the best changing robe in the UK right now?

Great quality, warm and available in a whole host of colours and prints, the original Dryrobe Advance Long Sleeve is the best changing robe to buy in 2025.

However, if the £175 price tag puts you off, I recommend Osprey's £70 changing robe is the best budget alternative to a Dryrobe®.
