I should start by saying that I am one of those people.

I was in my local (affluent for context if that makes a difference) and as always I was looking out for people who looked good so I could steal some ideas. There were none!! Everyone looked a right state - I also appreciate that many people don’t care, but some do and, like me, need help. So I started thinking about some rules - add or disagree, but I think most people need help! Especially need more ‘do.., ‘ tips.

  1. No crop trousers!
  2. Nearly everyone needs a better bra.
  3. Check your back view in the mirror- many people had visible pants.
  4. If you’ve got bigger boobs and a bit of a tum cropped trousers and a t-shirt that isn’t tucked in is very unflattering.
  5. longer summer dresses that I keep reading on here are dated look nicer than many other options.

edited for typos

I love cropped trousers, especially if they have turn ups.
Yes I need a better bra but getting measured these days is difficult. When I went to a posh bra shop they said I needed an underwire, even though I said I didn’t wear them, then charged me a fortune for two bras I don’t wear!
Im a recent convert to summer dresses, I look better dressed without trying! I’m just not a fan of the summer dresses and trainers thing, paint your toe nails and wear some nice slip ons or sandals.

Really depressed to see a Brit bashing thread in S&B. Came here for a break from Hate.

loveawineloveacrisp · 21/06/2026 08:35

What do you suggest people wear then?

brit-bashing hate?? Loads of us find it hard to dress in hot weather - we aren’t used to it. It’s style and beauty so some dos and donts would be useful - seems the best place to ask!

Speak for yourself. I look great 🤪

Dragonscaledaisy · 21/06/2026 08:36

Perhaps consider moving to a wealthier area where people can afford better quality clothes? There's no shortage of well dressed people in the area I live.

Lomonald · 21/06/2026 08:36

You mean women you are slating women for not being "stylish" and "pleasing to the eye " i will continue to wear cropped trousers and un tucked t shirts thanks.for the advice though !

Me too!

MidnightPatrol · 21/06/2026 08:39

On the contrary, I love all the outfits you see when the weather is good! I think you see so many fabulous sun dresses and ladies looking amazing.

The only thing I find very try funny is the typical trouser-wearing gentleman wearing shorts, because they seem to stick to the same socks and shoes regardless - so the socks are eg black and pulled as far up to the knee as they can go, with an inappropriate shoe.

Dragonscaledaisy · 21/06/2026 08:39

GoodkneeBadKnee · 21/06/2026 08:37

Me too!

I look fantastic at all times, regardless of temperature or time of year.

Agree, can we try and have a nicer, more positive approach on S&B. Including yourself in the slagging doesn't make it better OP
and

  1. I look great thanks
  2. It's so old fashioned to care about VPL and 'flattering'
  3. Capri trousers are 'back in' according to the fashion press
Cockerpoomom · 21/06/2026 08:39

Focus on what you're wearing and let other people worry about them selves. Maybe some people have more to worry about than what they look like. It's clothes.. Some people are worrying about money, ill health, mental health, people they love might be struggling. When it comes down to it who cares about what you wear. There's more important things going on in the world at the minute.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 21/06/2026 08:39

Currently wearing black trousers and a cotton top from (horror) Seasalt. Not displaying any expanses of flesh but I’m (more horror) fat so I doubt I pass.

JustSetFireToIt · 21/06/2026 08:39

Things that look nice:

Sunglasses
A light tan
long flowy dresses
wide trousers and top
sandals or slides
wearing colours that suit your skin tone

NCTDN · 21/06/2026 08:39

I had on some cropped trousers the other day. Didn’t think they looked that bad…until I saw a photo! Omg they looked awful. I’m never wearing them again.

Yup me too 😅. And one of the few bras that don't make me itch when I'm sweaty!

I was going to ask this question! I expected to see builder's bums, moons, etc covered (or rather uncovered).

Well presumably because she’s not a man so what they were wearing isn’t relevant to her.

Same.

Most of the no so affluent are mostly dressed nicely. What's wrong with cropped trousers, anyway? They're everywhere this summer.

GoodkneeBadKnee · 21/06/2026 08:37

Brit bashing? Jeez!!

Yes, it's very common on S&B along with the cliché of "don't all French/ Italian/Spanish women look great all the time"

ChuisEpuisee · 21/06/2026 08:36

Op was looking for inspiration of ideas on how to dress so why would she look at the men?

AbsoluteHoot · 21/06/2026 08:43

This is my mother in law’s summer uniform. She is 88 though, and she looks comfortable and cool.

We went to a pub on Friday for lunch. Now, I pretty much live in short denim shorts if the weather’s good, but a young woman in the pub garden had on shorts so short, her arse cheeks were visible. It was not a good look.

Lifelover16 · 21/06/2026 08:44

Why all the snarky replies?
OP is asking for some advice for dressing in unusually hot British weather, her opinion is people in UK (including herself) don’t look well dressed. She doesn’t personally like crop trousers and tee shirts.
I was hoping to read some constructive and helpful suggestions from style and beauty contributors.
