Shorts scare me but I need some please.

Help! I need some shorts for city breaks in hot places. Below knee. Hand luggage only so they need to roll up small, not get overly creased (so no linen etc) and can just throw on with a t shirt.

They'll be worn with either practical trainers/walking shoes or sensible walking sandles.

I'm short and fat and my bum and thighs are huge. I'm very self conscious of my legs.

It is not going to be my best look(!) but I'd like to reduce the awfullness if possible. Any tips or spotted anything?

High Street budget.

Are you sure you want over the knee shorts rather than thin cotton trousers?

I have some a bit like this and love them in summer. Much comfier and less exposed than shorts!

minipie · 05/05/2026 22:28

They also come in petite by the way

CharlotteStreetW1 · 05/05/2026 22:30

A bit left field but I have this/these and they're really comfortable. I also have a couple of shorter golf ones.

I really struggle to find trousers that fit. I love the blue but I can tell they wont be comfy over my thighs. They look like they'll crease really easily. I know there will be some creases but I want to minimise them as much as possible.

I'd look awful in that dress! 🤣 like, really awful.

Dresses and skirts are my go to but I want to minimise packing as much as possible.

I really struggle to find trousers that fit and cotton trousers like crease like anything.

How short are they? I wonder if they'll fit over my thighs. They look quite snug.

My husband has just reminded me I have a New Look voucher so they are worth a look I guess.

The current barrel leg or balloon shape is ideal for large thighs (I have chunky thighs too)

Or look for versions with lyocell in the fabric to avoid creasing (without being sweaty like polyester). Like these

Shorts will crease too unless they are thick denim, and then won’t they be really hot? There are lots of knee length denim shorts around (Jorts) but personally I think they are very unflattering on anyone with short legs, like me!

I've not tried barrell legs. I've never seen any irl but I always imagine, they'll look like oversized pantaloons on me. 🤣

Lycell is a good call.

Stupid question. Aren't they just 3/4 length trousers? I thought cullotes were like floaty skirts but with legs?

I'm utterly clueless. I used to be somewhat stylish.

You really don't need shorts for a city, even in hit weather. Floaty or linen trousers are much cooler, more elegant and don't mark you out as a tourist. I wouldn't dream of wearing shorts in a European city, but with the right choice of trousers I'm never too hot.

HaveYouHadYourBreak · 05/05/2026 22:45

So general consensus is step away from the shorts and stick with thin trousers either full length or shorter?

I guess then I wont need to worry about socks or sunburn! 🤣

I was hoping to buy online but I'll need to go proper shopping to try trousers on in the shop. I hate clothes shopping.

Not linen. I hate linen because it creases if you look at it. If I wear it, I look like I'm wearing stuff I found at the bottom on the laundry basket, not elegant and cool.

Those are the sort of thing I was thinking of but the first are linen and the second are too long for my stumpy legs but I dont think the cut can be hemmed.

Is Uniqlo ok generally though? I've never shopped there because it seems very utilitarian. The last time I saw a shop, it looked like it was all sludgy colours which can look good but not on me.

these culottes could work

Agree culottes to me means “looks like a skirt”

They are good. I wonder how lomg they'd be on me?

Is the site legitimate do you know? I got loads of pop ups and special "spin the wheel to win a prize" adverts.
