crikey? how many boxes are you doing? is Christmas day not enough?

FionnulaTheCooler · 03/10/2023 21:45

Do you do Elf on a Shelf? If so I'd make the December 1st box the arrival of the Elf and advent calendar.

Knivesandforks · 03/10/2023 21:46

1st we do pjs and calender, maybe a book. Xmas eve is an activity- art usually, colouring book, hotchoc, night before Christmas book.

Riverlee · 03/10/2023 21:50

Never heard of December 1st boxes. Never did Christmas Eve boxes, and thankfully missed the Elf trend due to dc being too old when it became A Thing.

what happened to a simple sticking, and presents in Christmas day?

TitusMoan · 03/10/2023 21:51

Nothing. No one needs 1st December boxes if they’re getting presents 24 days later. Advent calendar, that’s it.

Consumer culture, jeez

coloursquare · 03/10/2023 21:53

Nothing

Turtles4543 · 03/10/2023 21:56

1st Xmas pjs, Elf, advent calendars, Xmas books.
Xmas Eve box we pop in the mince pie plate, the stockings, some choc and then we put the Elf in there to say goodbye.

We have an advent cottage with 25 little numbered drawers for the grandkids to open every day in December. It's just like an advent calendar and we put chocolates in each drawer

RedToothBrush · 03/10/2023 22:06

Dec 1st advert calender. Dec 24th PJs.

No fucking box or elf.

QforCucumber · 03/10/2023 22:08

1st December is when they get advent calendar, Christmas story book and Xmas pjs. (Becuase I want them to be worn more than 1 bloody night)

Xmas eve we don’t do box or any presents. We go to the pub for an early dinner then walk home around the estate looking at lights before home to bed.

everything is Xmas day

Zampa · 03/10/2023 22:11

We were given an Elf (thanks for that ...) so he'll arrive with the Advent calendars on 1st December. I have actually bought the Elf some accessories this year. I hate myself.

I do love a Christmas Eve box though. We do PJs, a book, and a bath bomb.

Ponderingwindow · 03/10/2023 22:28

We just do 1st December, not Christmas Eve. Ours are just Christmas pajamas and an advent calendar.

i like to get the most out of the Christmas pjs. Yes, they get worn for the rest of winter, but they just feel more special in December

ohfook · 04/10/2023 00:40

I don't do a Christmas Eve box. I do have a box that comes out on 1st December though and it just has Christmas books, dvds (it's old), Christmas mugs in, some cookie cutters, Christmas writing paper, recipes etc it sits under the tree and just means we can do nice Christmassy things with the contents. My favourite thing in it is a photo album that I've been adding to for years with just a few photos of Christmassy things we've done each year. I like to think one day it'll be a family heirloom but in reality nobody gives a shit about it except me after too much wine when I start to get emotional about the dog's first Christmas/my gran's last Christmas etc etc.

It's sentimental rather than consumerist (in my opinion) because I'm not buying shit to put in it every year, unless the writing paper runs out, because it's things that bring us joy year after year.

Abra1t · 04/10/2023 00:46

Nobody I know does either.

DinosaurOfFire · 04/10/2023 00:48

On the 1st December, our refillable advent calendar, "shepherd on the search" and accompanying book, and random Christmas stuff like stories etc come out in a basket. Christmas eve is pjs (not new, whichever are the Christmas ones that year) and the Night Before Christmas storybook. We also put out a mincepie and carrot and milk for Santa.

This with Xmas bells on

TravellingT · 04/10/2023 01:00

1st- PJs, bedding, bedroom christmas decs e.g. little tree and baubles, tinsel etc some chocs, a christmassy dress each, hair clips. List writing set, festive books,

Eve- special pjs, outfit for xmas day, stocking to hang on their mantels, christmas eve book

Greenshake · 04/10/2023 01:02

This is a blatant waste of money that will pile even more pressure onto already stretched parents. Where does this end? It’s bad enough that Halloween is now some massive extravaganza.

MintJulia · 04/10/2023 01:03

I don't do either. We celebrate Christmas on the 25th December.

SingingSands · 04/10/2023 01:03

1st December box? 😂 C'mooooooon!

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/10/2023 01:06

RedToothBrush · 03/10/2023 22:06

Dec 1st advert calender. Dec 24th PJs.

No fucking box or elf.

This. In the olden days of yore I used to be known as someone who loved and overdid Christmas. I'd have a decoration theme, including all present wrapping etc. But tasteful like. That was considered OTT 30 years ago.

Now the whole of December is a Roman bloody orgy of consumerism and greed.

It quite turns me off.

This is ridiculously way over the top!
Xmas day is for presents not the rest of the month

greengobbledygook · 04/10/2023 01:56

I make my nieces December 1st boxes (bags). I find a Christmas themed blanket from Asda or something, a new Christmas cup, a Christmas book or colouring book and Christmas pyjamas mainly!

Weatherwax13 · 04/10/2023 02:08

I do Dec 1st boxes for my GC. Always think Christmas Eve boxes are a bit of a waste as Christmas pjs etc don't get much wear.
I wanted to give them advent calendars as a continuation of what I did for AC. But I've made it a bit more fun, and they get the calendar, supplies to make their own Christmas cards for their parents, pjs and Christmas themed chocolate in a little box.
I add a note from Santa and leave it on the doorstep. They love it, although two of them are old enough now to know full well it's from Grandma.

Kissmas · 04/10/2023 02:21

It always makes me wonder how certain threads end up in active before they've even had a reply. It's almost like an invitation to pile on and make the OP feel like shit. Even well established posters join in year after year. Pathetic.

December 1st - I bring out the Christmas clothing that fits, if they've outgrown it they will get new Xmas pjs or a jumper. Christmas story books from the loft and advent calendars.

Christmas Eve - no box but these were "a thing" back in the 70s and 80s. Ours was wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper and my mum had followed on from her mum before. Here we go out to see the lights on local houses and then home for a film before bed.
