AIBU to take a sick day to finish my MSc dissertation?

I work two part time jobs and two school ages kids, single Mom and just about to finish dissertation for MSc which has taken 2 years. I’ve had 1 sick day from work all year but had to have a couple of days off as kids were sick. AIBU to call in sick tomorrow as this needs to be handed in the weekend and I need extra time!! I don’t want to rush it and fail after 2 years hard work.

I’d take the rest of the week unless it’d impact your pay

TheRozzers · 06/05/2026 18:00

Do It, you have my permission

Twoshoesnewshoes · 06/05/2026 18:01

ilovesooty · 06/05/2026 18:01

Baldermash · 06/05/2026 18:02

Will it inconvenience your colleagues?

RampantIvy · 06/05/2026 18:04

Do it.

Mumof1andacat · 06/05/2026 18:04

Do it

FangFan · 06/05/2026 18:08

I’d do it if necessary

passwordchanges · 06/05/2026 18:08

Do it. Sod your colleagues, they won’t think about you if they pull a sickie. I’d call in with d&v for the rest of the week and get it done then relax.

ShesRunningOutTheDoor · 06/05/2026 18:08

Do it xx

WildUmberCrow · 06/05/2026 18:09

FeelingSadToday1 · 06/05/2026 18:12

I don’t want to rush it and fail after 2 years hard work.

I think that ship already sailed.

How long have you had when you could have done it?

If only you'd had a 3 day weekend recently or something...

Or maybe she had 2 kids entertained for 3 days rather than 2?

Wineandrun · 06/05/2026 18:50

Definitely do it. Well done for sticking it out!

Malasana · 06/05/2026 18:58

Are you sick? If not, then don’t say you are. It’s dishonest and unfair.

I’m sure you’ve known the date due for ages do any rush is your own fault.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 06/05/2026 19:01

Bloody hell you look terrible. How long have you been vomiting? Please stay away from people, it might be contagious.

And if you feel awkward still, have two chocolate bars and a strong coffee. Then you can legitimately call in sick 😂.

MeganM3 · 06/05/2026 19:02

Wholeheartedly think you should, yes. Do whatever you need to do to get it finished to the best of your ability.
It’s only a couple of days, work will cope.

HoskinsChoice · 06/05/2026 21:57

You're intelligent enough to do an MSc but not intelligent enough to manage your own time? Presumably this deadline has been in place for many months? Why should your company and your colleagues suffer for your incompetence?

No, you should not be using paid work time to do your MSc without their permission. And if you really are doing an MSc, you know that!

Whatthewhatwhatwhat · 06/05/2026 22:03

Ignore the holier than-thou comments. Just do it.
