To want to sell a butter knife on ebay

I listed a cutlery set on ebay but they have taken the listing down on the basis that the butter knife is a BLADED ITEM.

More and more I'm noticing that sites supposed to help us (sell your old things!) are just adding friction and wasting time and money.

I can relist the bloody butter knife, but I have to use one of their special approved couriers to ensure a minor isn't investing in butter knives. But I'm tired, and I don't want to. I think the internet peaked in 2015 and it's all downhill since then.

I feel your frustration OP - I had exactly the same problem recently, trying to sell some spare chainsaw chains, but got round it by covering the postage costs myself, sending them via standard postage ( adding the cost to the Ebay listing price) and simply describing them to the Post Office counter staff as 'chainsaw spares'

I feel your pain! I bought a kitchen knife online recently and it was a huge faff to prove I was over 18.

Maybe take your butter knife to a charity shop or local antiques dealer, depending on age, value etc.

CoverLikelyZebra · 06/05/2026 13:20

Can you describe it as a "butter spreader" to avoid the knife rule?

youalright · 06/05/2026 13:21

Its quite understandable why they have strict rules though isn't it

ColdAsAWitches · 06/05/2026 13:21

It's not ebay making your life difficult, it's been the law since 2019 that you can't sell bladed items online without some form of age verification

I tried to sell a brooch on Etsy, it was a kilt pin Scottish sort of thing in the shape of a sword and the algorithm got me and it was taken down.

Sunisgettinganewhaton · 06/05/2026 13:24

Given the amount of stabbings with a butter knife in the newspapers I'm shocked you even tried to sell it op!!
Insane..
I'd bloody love a butter knife. Send it my way and I'll give you a tenner op !!
My butter dish is a prized possession.!

Thanks, good tips. It wouldn't feel so annoying if I hadn't reported a listing a week ago when I was looking for a book and noticed someone selling 'books' for way less - of course they are all PDF rip offs, completely breaking copyright.

The response to my report? An AI decided 'no violation'.

When I needed to get rid of a couple of inherited knives I just took them to the amnesty bin at the police station.

I think they get melted down to make other stuff. Or perhaps a new knife angel.

I listed a beautiful solid silver antique wedding cake knife on ebay years ago. They took it down, they said someone had reported it. But there were a dozen wedding cake knives listed and still stood from private sellers
I had the last laugh I stood it to an antique shop and got £40 more than I expected for it and had originally asked for on ebay.

Confusedmeanderings · 06/05/2026 15:41

Im an antiques trader selling both online and IRL. I have 2 things in stock that I cant sell online. A Victorian policeman's truncheon and a beautiful 17th century wooden child's cradle. I get the truncheon a bit, although I'm sure I'd have no problem with a bat, but the cradle annoys me. No one in their right mind would put an actual child in it. On the other hand, I have no problems with a paper knife!

I tried to buy a pair of sewing scissors on eBay earlier today and couldn't without providing credit card details to prove my age. I don't have a credit card, so ended up buying them on Amazon instead.

Hilariously I've had the same eBay account since 2006 so you'd think that might give them a clue I'm over 18...

We had a set of old kitchen knives to be thrown out and asked the police what we should do, as we obviously wanted to dispose of them appropriately. We were told to put them in the wheelie bin.

tobee · 06/05/2026 21:02

Why is a butter knife more of a bladed item than the other knives that the cutlery set has?

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 06/05/2026 21:12

This is what happens when governments make kneejerk laws in response to hysterical news headlines rather than dealing with the longterm root causes of societal problems.

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 06/05/2026 21:20

EBay is weird sometimes. I once tried to sell a bundle of my DD’s colourful knitted tights age 5-6 and the listing got removed because, wait for it…I hadn’t specified that the tights had been washed since being worn. Apparently there are people who get off on buying unwashed tights so eBay now stipulates that the listing must state they’ve been washed if they’re listed as used. Obviously I had pre-washed them, it just never occurred to me to to mention it as it felt like stating the obvious.

Also, you can’t advertise a ‘onesie’ on eBay as it is trademarked even though it’s commonly used by UK retailers.

JennyForeigner · 06/05/2026 21:22

You think you've got problems. I once tried to sell a persian carpet.

I need more from this anecdote please.

Pizza cutters are also 18+.
