While you do have to think about battery life and recharging between uses, the cordless vacuums on our list have surprisingly good suction – enough to tackle dirt, dust and debris from a busy family home. Most of them also come with a convenient charging station and range of accessories suitable for hard floors, carpets and upholstery, so choose well, and they'll also be able to handle embedded pet hair, making it quick and easy to clean up after your beloved pooch or moggy.

Cordless vacs tend to be much lighter than their corded counterparts too, so they're far easier to sweep around your whole house. All of the vacuums featured in this guide weigh in at under 4.5kg – light enough to carry upstairs without huffing and puffing, or quickly grab for a speedy clean before the in-laws arrive.

To help you choose the best cordless vacuum cleaner for your home, we've rounded up the top options across a range of budgets and needs, including models that have been tried, tested and vetted by our expert home editors.

How we test cordless vacuum cleaners

We started by digging into the trusted recommendations of real users on the Mumsnet forums - the UK’s largest online parenting network. We combed through hundreds of posts on vacuums cleaners to see the models and brands that discerning Mumsnet users have tried, tested and loved.

We then carried out our own hands-on testing of in real homes. Mumsnet's experienced team of product testers - including home editors Natasha Gregson and Poppy O'Neill, along with floorcare writer Laura Cooke - put cordless vacuums through their paces. We tested each one against everyday mess, including a dedicated cereal spill test. We then scored them across the following key areas:

  • Suction power

  • Battery life

  • Performance on hair

  • Manoeuvrability and ease of use

  • Bin emptying and maintenance

  • Value for money

Here are the cordless vacuum cleaners that impressed us most from the selection we tested - we think these are the best cordless vacuum cleaners to buy in 2026:

I’ve got the Dyson cordless V15 Absolute Pet Detect and I absolutely love it! It’s so powerful. Easy to empty and switch between attachments. My carpet looks immaculate for next to no effort. It was a lot of money and I felt nervous buying it, but it’s worth every penny.

Our verdict

Tested by Mumsnet home editor Poppy O’Neill: Read our in-depth Dyson V15 Detect review

Whilst it’s a substantial investment, the V15 Detect is arguably Dyson’s most popular vacuum - certainly if Mumsnet users and online reviewers are anything to go by. It isn’t the brand’s most recent release (that title goes to the hi-tech but pricier Gen5 Detect), but thanks to consistent consumer praise and proven performance, the V15 remains the standout choice in our eyes.

During testing, I was impressed by how well this cordless vacuum performed on both hard flooring and carpets, with three power levels that automatically adjusted to my floor type as I whizzed around the house. On areas that needed extra attention, the V15 switched to its highest-suction turbo mode, saving battery by only using this power-draining feature on spots where it was actually needed.

It comes with eight handy attachments, including a crevice and hair screw tool, so I could reach every corner of my house and tackle pet hair on the sofa - which is essential for me, in a house with two cats and two dogs!

While many cordless vacs feature headlights to illuminate dust the V15 stands out due to its green laser function, which highlights absolutely everything during a clean. I also loved that the battery indicator shows you time remaining in minutes, so I knew exactly how long I had left until it ran out of juice.

It's relatively lightweight to use, but the biggest drawback is that you need to hold down the trigger continuously when cleaning. This isn't ideal, especially if you have mobility problems - if this puts you off we'd recommend the Gtech AirRAM 3 instead.

  • Takes a long time to recharge

I recently bought the Russell Hobbs one for £65 and so far it’s been amazing for daily use. We have several pets, and I have to empty it every single day, as it sucks up so much hair and dust that it fills the tank completely. It’s ridiculously light, separates out into a handheld vacuum too and is still going strong at the end of vacuuming a large four-bed house. 10/10 from me. [...]

Tested by Mumsnet editor Poppy O'Neill: Read our full Russell Hobbs Centaur review

If you're on a more limited budget and can't stretch to the Dyson V15, this affordable Russell Hobbs cordless vacuum comes in at under £50 on sale (RRP £65), making it an absolute bargain for everyday cleaning jobs.

A lightweight and portable design, it’s quick to convert between upright and handheld vacuum modes, making it ideal for removing fluff and hair from your stairs or for a quick once-over of your car’s upholstery.

We love that it comes with a two-in-one crevice tool and illuminated floor head lights, which help you clearly see underneath your furniture, ensuring no dust is left lurking behind.

Despite the budget-friendly price tag, the runtime on this vacuum is an impressive 60 minutes in eco mode. However, like most cordless designs, the battery drains considerably faster when used on high power. It also takes a long time to recharge, so we recommend you use the boost mode sparingly.

I recently bought this one. I do like it, but although it states up to 60 minutes battery, in reality it only does 1/2 [the] house on one charge. To me, that's a good excuse for a brew whilst it charges.

Tested by Mumsnet editor Poppy O'Neill: Read our full Shark Stratos IZ400UK review

Mumsnet users rave about the Shark Stratos range for its anti-hair wrap technology, making it a popular choice for homes with children and multiple four-legged friends. While it doesn't quite have the suction power of its corded counterpart, the Shark Stratos Upright (our best vacuum for pet hair), this cordless model's performance is still highly impressive, with an innovative brush head that doesn’t clog or tangle even with long-haired cats or playful pups.

We love how the flexible handle bends in the middle for low-profile cleaning, and thanks to the illuminated head, it's quick and easy to collect the Cheerios that are forever finding their way underneath your sofa.

Run time can vary, so while the brand claims it can clean for up to 60 minutes, Mumsnet user Bigpinkslippers found that "in reality it only does half [the] house on one charge." At 4.1kg, it's also the heaviest model on our list. For those reasons, we think it’s better suited to quick clean-up tasks than a thorough, whole-house clean.

On a brighter note, while it's a bagless design, we love the Anti-Allergen Complete Seal, which traps 99.9% of dust and allergens so they won’t escape back into the room.

I have the newish Henry cordless and like it. It lasts 45 - 75 minutes depending on which setting you have it on. I tend to have it on the most powerful and it does a great job on carpets and rugs, so not enough to do [the] whole house top to bottom in one go, but enough for in between 'big' cleans.

Tested by Mumsnet writer Laura Cooke: Read our in-depth Henry Quick Vacuum Cleaner review

As a general rule, portable cordless vacuums typically have a smaller capacity than their corded equivalents; however, the Henry Quick is the exception, featuring an intelligent pod system that can accommodate up to one litre of dirt, dust, and grime.

I was very impressed by how powerful this vacuum was during testing, and as a charming bonus, I couldn’t help but love the nod to Henry’s iconic smile on the handle. While Henry is traditionally better known for its bulky cylinder vacuums like the HVR160, the brand has proven they can more than hold their own in the world of cordless vacs too.

The suction is fantastic - it handled dust, crumbs and clumps of cat hair no problem. Just make sure you select the right tool for the job though, something I learnt the the hard way during our cereal spill test. With the floor head, I was left with a crunched-up mess of Cheerios scattered across the floor, but the combi tool came to the rescue, sucking them up right away.

While the pods (bags) are an additional expense, the vacuum comes with six to get you started - plenty for quick clean-up tasks. They also allow for simple one-touch emptying for effective waste disposal without any dust clouds in sight.

With a battery life of up to 75 minutes, it's also one of the more generous runtimes we’ve seen in eco mode - plenty for a quick whizz around both floors if you’re expecting short-notice guests. Plus, if your dog is prone to smells that linger (if you know, you know!), the scented pods are a handy optional extra.

Tested by Mumsnet floor care editor Natasha Gregson: Read our in-depth Gtech AirRAM 3 Cordless Vacuum review

The original MK2 model proved popular amongst Mumsnet users, but the much-loved GTech AirRAM has recently had an upgrade. With impressive edge-to-edge cleaning and incredible suction power that blew me away, it's a seriously powerful cordless vacuum. It made light work of our cereal spill test, guzzling up every last cornflake in seconds, scoring 10/10 when it came to suction. It's simple to use too, with just one power level which rivals the 'turbo' modes on many competitor models. The 30-minute runtime is also great when you take this into account.

What really sets the AirRAM apart from the likes of the Dyson V15 and Henry Quick is its upright design. Unlike stick vacuums, it stands up on its own - no docking station or wall mounting required. While this does make it slightly heavier than some (just under 4kg), it's still relatively lightweight and I found it easy to shift around my home. The innovative Forward Inertia Drive also helps it to glide across all floor types, from thick rugs to laminate and tiles.

However, the biggest downside is the lack of attachments, which limits its versatility. Realistically, you'll need another handheld for the stairs, tight spots and upholstery. But what it does do, it does exceptionally well, and it's one of the best cordless vacuums for suction power.

Tested by Mumsnet editor Poppy O'Neill: Read our full Bosch Unlimited 10 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner review

While many of the older models in the Bosch Unlimited range still come highly rated by Mumsnet users, the brand claims that their latest model, the Unlimited 10, is their best ever at blitzing dirt, dust and debris - particularly on hard flooring.

With a bending design for low-profile cleaning, the powerful MicroClean brush removes more than 99.9% of dust, even that invisible to the naked eye. We love the improved visibility provided by the LED headlights, while the MicroRing light tracks your progress by glowing blue once an area has been thoroughly cleaned.

With up to 100 minutes of run time depending on which of the six settings you choose, you should be able to whip around the whole house without the need to recharge (unless, of course, you're lucky enough to live in a palatial estate). Best of all, the removable lithium battery recharges in just one hour - the fastest recharge time among all the cordless vacuums on our list. You do pay for the convenience though, as it's our priciest pick.

Reviewed by Mumsnet tester, Alison: Read our full Miele Duoflex HX1 Total Care Cordless Vacuum Cleaner review

With an impressive nine additional attachments included in the box, the Miele Duoflex HX1 Total Care Cordless Vacuum Cleaner has all you need to give every single nook and cranny in your home (and car) a good clean.

Lightweight yet with powerful suction, our tester Alison was impressed with how well it dealt with her dog's hair. Unfortunately, one of the attachments broke during testing, so the 2-year guarantee is good to have.

The vac has a respectable 55-minute run time, and takes 3.5 hours to recharge. Alison used the boost function to effectively get rid of pet hair in her stair carpets, but noted that this super-powerful setting does use more power than standard suction.

What is a cordless vacuum?

Unlike corded vacuums, which require a mains connection, cordless vacuums are powered by a rechargeable battery. As a result, cordless vacuums provide you with the freedom to navigate around your home without restriction. Generally lightweight and portable, they’re often seen as a more convenient choice for quick cleanup tasks, particularly in hard-to-reach areas like stairs or the upholstery of a car.

Are cordless vacuums as powerful as corded ones?

Thanks to their continuous power source, corded vacuum cleaners often have a higher level of suction and power compared to cordless designs, frequently performing better when cleaning thick pile carpets and rugs or lifting ingrained pet hair.

That said, some cordless designs are surprisingly powerful as well, albeit for shorter durations.

If you’re struggling to decide between corded and cordless designs, our cordless vs corded vacuum guide is packed full of valuable expert insights to help you make your choice.

How long does the battery on a cordless vacuum last?

The battery life of a cordless vacuum can vary (quite considerably) from one brand to the next. On the lowest or eco settings, most models will provide between 30 minutes and an hour of uninterrupted use. Runtime reduces on the highest power settings, with turbo modes ranging from five to 15 minutes of runtime.

It’s also worth noting that some motorised tools and attachments will drain the battery faster than standard brush heads.

Recharge times can be considerable (two to five hours) to return to full charge, so it’s recommended to recharge your cordless vacuum after each use. If you plan to clean over longer durations, you may want to opt for a model with a removable battery, allowing you to buy a spare and switch to a second one when the first runs out.

What to consider when choosing the best cordless vacuum

Here are some key things to consider when choosing the best cordless vacuum cleaner for your home.

  • Weight: One of the significant benefits of a cordless vacuum is that they’re generally much lighter than corded upright or cylinder vacuum cleaners. The more lightweight the vacuum, the easier it is to manoeuvre, particularly if you have a bad back or joint issues.

  • Bin capacity: While it can increase the weight, a larger bin capacity means you can clean for longer without needing to empty it. Most of the cordless vacuum cleaners on our list have a capacity of less than one litre, with the Henry Quick being the most generous choice.

  • Tools and accessories: Consider which tools are included, such as pet tools, crevice nozzles, and brushes for upholstery. Some vacuums also transform into handheld vacs, with others including wall cradles or stands for convenient storage and charging.

How do I maintain a cordless vacuum?

It’s essential to maintain your cordless vacuum to keep it running its best and prolong its lifespan. Here are some basic maintenance tasks to maintain suction power and performance.

  • Empty the dustbin regularly, and if visibly dirty, wipe down the inside with a damp cloth to remove any remaining debris. Make sure it's dry before the next use.

  • Regularly check the brush roll for any clogs or tangles. If hair is wrapped around the brush roll, remove it from the vacuum and cut away gently with scissors.

  • Check the tubes and attachments for blockages.

  • Recharge the batteries to full before storing for more extended periods.

How we chose the best cordless vacuum cleaner UK

Selection of the best cordless vacuums in testing

Recommendations from real Mumsnet users

For reliable first-hand experiences, we first headed to the Mumsnet forums, collating feedback from trusted Mumsnet users on the cordless vacuum models, brands and ranges that they rate, recommend and use in their own homes.

We also looked out for any negative reviews, where Mumsnetters highlighted products that they felt were poor quality, lacked suction power, or struggled to cope with debris from children and pets.

Expert opinions

Next up, we considered reviews and feedback from trusted industry experts. We want to be confident that the cordless vacuums we recommend are fit for purpose, so we looked out for award-winning products or those that were well regarded in the marketplace, including those recommended by floor care and cleaning experts.

Authentic consumer reviews

We also thoroughly investigated genuine, in-depth customer reviews on retailer sites such as Amazon, Argos, AO and Currys to get wider consumer experiences regarding the products on our shortlist.

Rigorous testing

To bring you our definitive list of the best cordless vacuum cleaners on the market, we also conducted our own hands-on testing. Mumsnet editors and writers put a selection of the vacuums on this page - including the Dyson, Henry, and Gtech models - through their paces in real homes, to see how they tackled everything from muddy footprints in hallways to crumbs under the kitchen table. Each model we tested was scored on suction power, battery life, ease of manoeuvrability, and overall value for money. We also trialled a number of cordless vacs that didn’t make the final cut, helping us draw clear comparisons and highlight only the very best performers.
