What does trans+ mean?

What is trans+?

I've seen it quite a few times today.
I thought it was all one umbrella? What doesn't fit into the umbrella which now needs to be +?

Is this a stealth transition from lgbtq+ to trans+ lingo?

Hopefully it means that the Trans+ us pulling away from LGB, given that Trans+ is all about special identities and LGB is all about sexual orientation.

BridgetPhillipsonIsACowardlyJobsworth · 23/05/2026 21:08

I have seen it a few times since the guidance was published, but it might be a coincidence. It seems to be the latest incarnation of the alphabetti soup acronym, but placing the "trans" foremost. It may be, as PP said, an attempt to separate from LGB, or perhaps they are attempting to absorb other groups into their umbrella (whether willingly or not, who knows).

On the face of it, to me, it just seems like another attempt to place "trans" in importance above everything thing else, but that might just be my perception.

If it gathers pace, no doubt we'll find out what it all means.

The first time I saw 'trans+' was in the Social Worker coverage of the trans demo in Parliament Sq today.
Given that it is access to women's toilets that the TRAs seem to be obsessing about, I think that + needs to be clarified -
does it mean that they are demanding access to women's toilets not just for transwomen, but for all men under the trans umbrella - non-binary men? 'queer' men? agender men? gender-fluid men? cross-dressing men?

One of the arguments for letting transwomen use the women's toilets is that there are so few of them, what does it matter, you'd hardly notice them etc.
But 'trans+' potentially includes a lot more men.

Trans+ was used in the recent NHS announcement about changing the single sex guidance

BridgetPhillipsonIsACowardlyJobsworth · 23/05/2026 21:51

So it seems to be a very recent phenomenon? Well, it's an interesting conundrum, but whatever they start calling themselves (or even others) will have no impact on women's single -sex spaces, because they can no longer attempt to redefine biology.

A way of referring not only to the transcommunity, but also trans-adjacent people and others who might benefit from some of the same resources as the trans community. The term is less about who specifically is included and more about who shares experiences. The + functions in much the same way as in LGBTQIA+. It’s a shorthand to describe that something might look to be only for trans people, but could be relevant to people beyond the trans community

seems reasonable? From Google

Could be, but I'd be interested to learn where the LGB has gone and if it's somehow been quietly dropped.

GallantKumquat · 23/05/2026 22:16

Essentially it's a spectrum term to include: gender queer, non-binary, gender‑fluid, agender, etc. A pet peeve because it includes gender-non-conforming, which is the opposite of having a gender identity, and therefore of being trans. Using the definition you could also argue that GC is a form of trans+.

TofuTuesday · 23/05/2026 22:19

Seems to be when something is specifically gender relevant rather than LGBTQ+ relevant. I can’t get offended by it.

I'm not 'offended' by it either, it's just that I think accuracy/clarity/definition of terms are important.

What does 'others who might benefit from some of the same resources as the trans community' mean?

Surely large swathes of the population would 'benefit from some of the same resources as the trans community.'

And if 'trans+' includes gender-non-conforming people - that puts me under the trans+ umbrella!

As I said before, the demonstration today was about access to women's toilets.
I want to know if the campaign is for all trans+ men to have access to women's toilets, or just transwomen.

The answer is the same - no men of any kind in women's toilets, but I'd still like to know who exactly they mean when they say 'trans+'.

  • Trans cold and flu edition, with added caffeine. Pharmacy only 💊

  • Trans with added flouride, for whiter teeth 🦷
  • Trans evening edition, with hot-off-the-press headlines. Extra, extra, read all about it! 🗞️
Bertiebiscuit · 23/05/2026 23:01

Gibberish plus i imagine, since "trans" is made up nonsense, there are only males and females plus clothes. More nonsense for the narcissists who pretend that "Cis", "non binary" "queer" means anything.

RogueFemale · 24/05/2026 00:19

As far as I know, it's an extra umbrella to include people who identify as things like faegender, demi-gender, xenogender, and myriad others on the mental health spectrum. Nothing to do with gay men or women or bisexual men or women.

Welcome to my world! 😬
(and being up before 5am on a Sunday is not going to help improve things)

DeanElderberry · 24/05/2026 06:23

trans + any other man who wants close-quarters access to non-consenting women who want privacy?

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 24/05/2026 06:25

I know, sciatica is my excuse, it is however quite at this time of the morning around my way, so I like to think it's the best time of the day to be up. 😂

I'm trying to think what I said in my post, I do know it wasn't a personal attack on anyone, so what else did I say that was so sensitive it had to be deleted? Is it something they don't want being talked about?

This is what happens when your up at stupid o'clock you end up wearing a TinFoil Hat. 🤣🤣🤣

DeanElderberry · 24/05/2026 06:26

preferably in underwear-adjacent situations

is that what they mean by liminal? The use of that seems to be moving away from all the depositing ritual hoards in water and building graves and altars on top of hills stuff we always had in archaeology. One step up from 'probably a ritual object' meaning 'no clue, sorry'.

Ooh, I've had severe sciatica before, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone! Commiserations.

Sometimes MNHQ doesn't like links in threads? Possibility?

curious79 · 24/05/2026 06:42

It’s a catch-all for whatever people identify as

It includes people who identify as MAPs - that being Minor Attracted Persons (oh yes, what you think that is….)…. So be very concerned

Thanks for your commiserations.
I didn't have a link in my post, I did use the term Alphabetties, maybe that's what rigger the deletion.

@RogueFemale I thought all that stuff was covered by Q

@DeanElderberry having looked up the word liminal, it could be 🤔

I knew I'd seen 'liminal' used somewhere else, thank you! Has been driving me crazy.

It seems to be the go-to terminology for making the poster seem ultra-intelligent, or at least more knowledgeable than anyone else. Main usage seems to be obfuscation when there clearly is no useful evidence or any way they can answer a question without incriminating themselves 🙄

So not quite madey-uppy, but goes to the same school with 'I am not a robot, but biological, and I am female, therefore I am a biological female.'

Or something equally intelligent.
