my eyesight is -1.00+1.25 and -0.25, do i need glasses when i learn to drive or not, im curious as i can read a 20 metre number plate therefore i mix up letters like Ms with Ws but otherwise i can still read it, just looking for reccomendations.

I would - it's much easier to read road signs.

arun100 · 23/04/2026 18:50

for this prescription would i only need glasses for driving and not all day use

Can you see properly without them?

You can’t actually read the number plate if you mix letters up though.
Wear your glasses

Wear the glasses. You need them.

Iloveeverycat · 23/04/2026 18:56

What does the optician say. They told me when I needed glasses for driving.

tarheelbaby · 23/04/2026 18:57

Seriously?!
You can't reliably, accurately read number plates from the minimum distance!
Definitely wear your glasses to drive!

Reading a number plate from 20 meters is a very general, generous test of your eyesight. You can't read the number plates accurately at that distance which means you should be wearing your glasses to drive. (for all our sakes!)

Also, if you can't read number plates accurately from the minimum distance, you won't pass the practical. You could drive the whole course perfectly but if you have to pull out your specs to read the number plate, I would expect the examiner to fail you.

Johnogroats · 23/04/2026 18:57

I’d wear them! You want your eye sight to be as good as it possibly can be when you’re driving!

Nickyknackered · 23/04/2026 18:59

God I've entered a new fear! People who need glasses to drive and don't! Fucking hell.

Arlanymor · 23/04/2026 18:59

Please take advice from your optician. It's really important to have the best possible visual acuity when driving - otherwise it's reckless and dangerous.

WoollyandSarah · 23/04/2026 19:00

@arun100 how do you feel about other drivers who could do with wearing glasses not wearing them? Or are you special?

arun100 · 23/04/2026 19:00

as much as im going to wear them for driving, the thing im curious about is do i also need them for all day use as i can still see its just the egdes or words at a distance look mildly soft.

If you wear prescription glasses, legally you should wear them when driving especially for insurance reasons.

arun100 · 23/04/2026 19:06

would i need them besides driving use

OP posts:
SpottyAlpaca · 23/04/2026 19:08

Yes, definitely. There is no reason not to wear your specs. Get yourself a pair of prescription sunglasses, too. They are invaluable, particularly when low sun is shining in your eyes.

arun100 · 23/04/2026 19:09

is my prescription strong enough to wear full time or, im just wondering as im unsure

Why do you think anyone else knows the answer to this more than you, you're the one with the actual eyesight?!

Why don’t you ask an optician?

What if the blur was a child? So, no. You clearly need glasses to drive as your long vision is not good enough. Do you really want to risk hitting a pedestrian or cyclist because you didn't make simple corrective actions to wear glasses? It would also invalidate your insurance if you have an accident and it comes to light that your vision was a factor.

TheyGrewUp · 23/04/2026 19:56

If you can see better with them than without of course you bloody well should. Why are you even asking.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/04/2026 20:01

DD has a similar prescription and she wears her glasses full time.

You’ve said you’re going to wear glasses for driving, so that’s fine. It’s kind of up to you whether or not you wear them all the rest of the time as well. If you have distance glasses for driving, it’s likely that they would improve your sight for anything involving looking at something a little way away. I wear mine at the theatre, cinema, concerts, sightseeing , sometimes watching TV, meeting friends in a crowded venue, till I’ve spotted them! Anything which is going to be enhanced by or where it’s crucial to have sharp vision. Just walking around, shopping, or out for a meal, I wouldn’t normally bother to wear them, but I always have them with me. If you have questions about your prescription, I would ask your optician.
