Dogs being walked when it’s too hot - do you say anything?

I’ve just seen two brachy breeds (a pug and a bulldog) being walked when it’s 27 degrees outside. Both were clearly struggling. Every year I get really upset seeing dogs being walked when it’s clearly far too hot but am scared of saying something in case the owners react aggressively. Equally, I feel terrible NOT saying anything because those dogs have no voice.

How do you handle this?

I wouldn't class 27 as too hot.

Tel12 · 23/05/2026 14:11

It's really difficult and yes 27c is too hot for dogs to be out walking. My dogs training session was cancelled today because of the heat. I think that I might be tempted to comment but I agree it's very difficult.

TheSmallAssassin · 23/05/2026 14:11

I don't think people should have breeds like this full stop, really. Poor things. I wouldn't say anything though, it's unlikely to be helpful.

mom2beprayforme · 23/05/2026 14:13

Every owner usually knows what their dog can handle or not
i also walk outside in a calm tempo with my older dog, just in a calm pace and no marathon or long walks.

Bemyclementine · 23/05/2026 14:13

The bigger issue here is the way these dogs are bred to not be able to breathe properly.

StarDolphins · 23/05/2026 14:15

I’m very passive aggressive so I usually give their dog a fuss and say “my dog gets walked late at night when it’s like this as it’s too hot in the day”

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 23/05/2026 14:16

You do know dogs live and get walked in consistently hot countries?
The family dog was walked today.
The ground was fine I checked with the back of my hand . If its cool, the dog gets walked. I'm fed up with shit in my garden.
I also have to commute to work in this weather. I dont get to stay indoors because the sun is out
Life generally goes on.
And if you confronted me I wouldn't thank you for telling me the sun's out as I'd already be aware , I'd tell you to mind your business

No, 27 isn't too hot for every single dog to be walking.

There are so many variables, brachy or not, age, weight, health, distance walked etc

DDog will happily walk 100 metres at that heat to the park, and then splash about in the stream in the shade.

But would struggle to walk for miles on a pavement in full sun. But then, so would I.

I would hope so but these dogs were making awful noises - above and beyond the usual noises that dogs of these breeds make 😓

If you chose to have a dog that can’t breath properly, chances are you probably don’t care about them being out in unsuitable temperatures. It’s not like the owners of these breeds are huge animal lovers, is it?

If you’d have said anything to me, with the kindest respect, I’d tell you to wind your neck in.
i know my dog better than a stranger.
I find it strange that people seem to think that dogs are the same.
mine loves the heat and will self regulate.
I know the signs that he isn’t coping better than you do.
I wouldn’t be stupid enough to take him out if he was panting or struggling.
He spends every summer in Spain and has no trouble with hot weather.
I do however change our walks and chose the forest rather than the fields on days like today.
Caveat to say he’s a Weimaraner so nothing will stop him

I’m not talking about the sun just being out, I’m talking about dogs visibly struggling in particular weather. I’m not saying today is too hot for any dog to be out, but clearly it’s too hot for SOME dogs to be out.

I make awful noises above and beyond whats considered normal when walking in the heat and sun . I still have to walk some way to work though

RoachFish · 23/05/2026 14:47

Not every dog lives in a house with a garden. I walk my dog in every weather condition because I don’t have outside space living in a city. If it’s hot the walks are shorter, I bring water or cucumber, we stay on the shady side of the street, and take breaks when needed. I can’t just walk early in the morning and late at night, but I can avoid midday sun.

It’s a shame some dogs have been bred to not be able to regulate their temperature, but that’s on those particular owner.

TomatoSandwiches · 23/05/2026 14:52

If they're walking them in the heat like this they're either too stupid or not interested in the dogs best interests to take any comments on board so I don't bother.
I do put out some bowls of fresh water for any dogs going past, that's the best I can do.

You are responsible for yourself, you can make your own choices in life. Dogs are totally dependent on their owners making responsible choices for them. Can’t believe I’m having to point that out.

On city streets, yes. In woodland or grassy area with shade, no.

Gcn · 23/05/2026 14:54

27 would be too hot for my dog to be walked in (boxer). I hate seeing dogs struggling in the heat but am too much of a woose to say anything. Surely the owners notice?

MissyB1 · 23/05/2026 14:56

We walked our dog at 8am this morning (and it was a much shorter walk than normal), before it got too hot. She will be walked again late this evening 8pm or later when hopefully it’s cooled down a bit. I’d rather she missed a walk than go out in the heat.

OP those owners won’t listen or care.

Nincompoo · 23/05/2026 15:01

I judge people that have dogs like that anyway tbh.

My dog, with his nose long nose and functional conformation would love a walk. 27° isn’t that hot!

Imthefunfriend · 23/05/2026 15:01

Agree that all dog owners should avoid the midday sun in this heat. My friend has a bulldog and it can go from breathing fine to wheezy/panting very quickly, it’s quite unpredictable and takes a long time to return to normal. She has stopped in the shade to give him a rest and people do stare and make comments. She’s not offended though, they are just looking out for the dog at the end of the day.

thinkofsomethingdifferent · 23/05/2026 15:04

All of our seaside towns will be full today of tourists who have brought their dogs. Those dogs will be put all day in this weather. You’d be literally stopping every person you passed.

daffodilandtulip · 23/05/2026 15:08

Dogs like that can’t breathe at the best of times, poor things.

Generally, people know their own dog though. I have a whippet and people will tell me it’s too hot to be out. She’s basically a shivering bag of bones who needs clothes in the house guys, she would live on the sun if you let her.

Notmyreality · 23/05/2026 15:11

Unfortunately the message is undermined by all the (nutjobs) do-gooders who as soon as the sun comes out plaster the “it’s too hot for dogs!!!” message all over social media.
its 18deg Karen. It’s fine.
