Do you get your nails done all the time?

I’ve had BIAB on for around a year now with mostly only infills. I removed them as I’m wanting to try another salon. When I first took them off they were long and looked ok but over the last week they have broken really low down to the point they’ve been bleeding and sore. Do you think I should give BIAB a rest for a good while now?
do you get your nails done or leave them?

Have you tried regular gel? I use that and don’t have any issues.

ConverselyAttired · 08/05/2026 12:38

I do mine a few times a year with my own gels and lamp. They look a bit scratched but don't snap after I've removed it; if anything they grow longer and stronger under the gel.

But no, the rest of the time I leave them. I've realised painting them is a waste of time. Takes forever to dry and they chip within 24 hours no matter what I used.

Overtheatlantic · 08/05/2026 12:46

I get a manicure on my natural nails every 3 weeks, although sometimes it’s just a file and polish. If that’s a photo of your nails then they are beautiful and healthy 🥰

DinosaurBlue · 08/05/2026 13:04

Biab wrecked my nails. It’s advertised as this thing to make your nails longer and stronger but once I stopped doing it, my nails were thin and peeling. Had to have bare nails for 6 months so they could heal before I started getting shellac again.

Mrscharlieeeee · 08/05/2026 13:25

I’ve been having mine done every 3-4 weeks for the last few years. My nails have always been flimsy and weak, I’ve only ever had long natural nails since I started BIAB. Occasionally if the get has peeled or something I will get breakage so I will cut them all down short and start again.

Echobelly · 08/05/2026 13:28

I don't get my nails done - tried it twice for the experience and it didn't last long and the second time around it was a shellac one that it took my nails 6 months to recover from - they kept breaking.

AfternoonVanessa · 08/05/2026 13:31

I've worked for most nail companies. You should give nails a rest from gel and builders. Every three months or so. I agree with other posters, you have great natural nails.

Villanousvillans · 08/05/2026 13:34

I’ve never had my nails done.

Highonmyownsupply · 08/05/2026 13:40

I’d recommend OPI repair mode, the one in the black bottle. It fixes the broken bonds. I use it now for a base coat and my nails are great. Pricey, but not compared to salon treatments.

Jane143 · 08/05/2026 13:41

No too expensive and they can be dirty

Blueeberry · 08/05/2026 13:45

I got mine done (biosculpture gel) every 3 weeks for years.. finally stopped a few months ago and I’m so glad I’m out of the vicious cycle.

Get nails done.. have them taken off.. nails damaged/weak/ugly looking.. pay £40 for the pleasure of getting them back on.. it never stops!!

Highonmyownsupply · 08/05/2026 13:46

yes, it’s a great business model for the salons!

SmallBlondeMum · 08/05/2026 13:49

I only got my nails done for the first time ever 9 years ago, I was in my 40s

Now every 3/4 weeks I get them done.
I will never not get my nails done!,

WhatWouldDianeLockhartDo · 08/05/2026 13:50

I’ve stopped getting mine done, purely due to cost and they were thin and weak but have recovered well. I was never too concerned about the health of my nails, if they’re covered with acrylic or biab, what does it matter?

ThatMiddleClassFood · 08/05/2026 13:50

Ex nail tech here and you're used to being able to be heavy handed with your nails becausr they've got a protective armour on (biab) now they're bare you need to be gentler on your hands. Nail products don't weaken your nails, excessive nail plate filing and using your nails as tools etc will. You could keep getting biab if you want the length or keep them natural and shorter.

CloudyBayPlease · 08/05/2026 13:51

Never. I do my own and just use regular nail varnish. This is Nailberry. It lasts around 10 days.

I get mine done every 3 weeks and have done for years.

its the gel bottle that the woman puts on them

ThisJadeBear · 08/05/2026 14:05

I think you have beautiful hands and model-like nails in that you have a long, slim nail bed.
I would keep them short while it’s getting warmer and concentrate on nail health. I love OPI products, get used to using nail oil regularly, too.
It must be strange with no ‘colour’ on your nails but they are so naturally pretty if let them rest for a while you can always use some polish yourself if you are doing something special. I use Leighton Denny Nail Illuminator on mine for every day it’s like a hybrid between a pale pink colour and a nail treatment.

MaybeIamJustABitch · 08/05/2026 15:08

Ooh, can I hijack and ask a question? I was a nail biter/picker for years, stopped maybe a year or 18 months ago.

They've strengthened since then, which is great, but only to a point when they can sometimes snap/snag/break. The only thing I've been putting on my nails is a Cutex all in one strengthener and sometimes a nail/cuticle oil, and that isn't a life saver.

I can't afford manicures or BIAB or whatever else is out there from a Salon perspective. Can anyone recommend something I can use that I can easily get hold of for not too much money that also doesn't need a heat lamp? Thanks

SassyButClassy · 08/05/2026 15:40

BIAB, gel and acrylics all wrecked my nails and nailbeds. At one point, I had continuous infills for 10 years. Then Covid came along, and I didn't have them done again until all back to normal. But it seems that, either my nails have changed or the process, because every method wrecks my nails and makes me regret going back.

I am trying to find a place that just does manicures and, in the meantime, I just use clear gloss. I've probably also aged out of any exciting colours and I hate the process of getting my nails done so there's that, too.

Just curious, when do you age out of pretty colours and fancy nail art? I'm 67 and love getting fancy coloured nails.

Yours look lovely if you love them for you!

KateBushAgain · 08/05/2026 17:06

I had gels for years before I started getting a bit freaked out about the horrible removal process . My nails were in a bad state but after going natural for a few years they’re still rubbish . So I don’t know if the gels were really to blame or it’s just my age. I’ve been trying to grow out a split for over a year and in desperation I’ve just had BIAB with a view to getting infills for the foreseeable. If nothing else I hope to get rid of this split .
My BIAB looks thick , maybe that’s just how it looks , hopefully it’ll look nicer as my nails start to get a bit of length.

Is that BIAB Nanof8?

JustPlainStanfreyPock · 08/05/2026 17:13

No, never. Have had severe eczema on my hands in the past, so always keep clear of harsh chemicals for fear of triggering a flare up.
