Are these frumpy?!

Hi all,
I've been searching for some lightweight jeans, found these from Next. They are so comfy and I think they'll be perfect for warmer days, travelling etc. But...
Are they frumpy/ totally un-stylish?! Not trying to offend if anyone owns them! Just I'm trying to update my summer wardrobe and look a bit more put together. I also quite like the matching blouse and am thinking of ordering that too...
Please speak up before I commit a crime against fashion! All opinions welcome. Thank you x

Oh I love those !!

Plasticdreams · 06/05/2026 14:25

I think they look good as a co-ord - it really depends how you style them.

Strandas · 06/05/2026 14:25

I think they look like pyjamas.

Jk987 · 06/05/2026 14:27

I don’t like the way they hover above the ankle and think full length look better personally. The colour is good and the wide leg.

JulietteHasAGun · 06/05/2026 14:27

I don't think pull on denim is ever a good look to be honest. Pull on wide leg or balloon style cotton trousers would be equally good for travelling. I'm not a double denim fan either but I appreciate co-ords are in.

I really can't talk - have just ordered linen trousers from Next and I always think linen trousers are not overly stylish but I saw a pair I really liked the picture of

Divebar2021 · 06/05/2026 14:28

I don’t think they’re frumpy no but like lots of things what else you wear and the way you style your hair etc can have an impact.

Comedycook · 06/05/2026 14:28

They'd look hideous on me but I look awful in cropped trousers...they could work depending on how you style them

I think that's the problem - combination of wide leg and crop. Wide leg should be resting on the top of your shoes I reckon. Couldn't put my finger on it, but think that's it.

PumpkinScarf · 06/05/2026 14:29

Depends how you style them I think they could lean ‘frumpy’ quite easily if you’re not careful.

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 06/05/2026 14:53

They're lovely,I live in similar.

Ineedanewsofa · 06/05/2026 14:54

They would be mid calf on me and look ridiculous. I think co-ords and loose trousers can look brilliant but have to be carefully styled, too many sets just look like pjs!

dudsville · 06/05/2026 15:07

It looks like an easy and effortless Co ord set!

Cupofteaandagoodbookthensleep · 06/05/2026 15:10

Style them carefully otherwise they could lean towards frumpy.

henlake7 · 06/05/2026 15:22

Look like a nice comfy wardrobe basic to me.
I think they would look great with a vest top and some fisherman sandals for example.
With white trainers and a 'nice' floral blouse? maybe not!😉

EnjoythemoneyJane · 06/05/2026 15:37

I’m not huge a fan of any denim-esque fabric (other than actual denim) but they do look relaxed and comfy. You’d need to try them on, though, OP. I think the frumpiness quotient will largely depend on where they fall on you, which should be slightly above the ankle to read as cropped wide-leg.

Any longer and it’ll just look like you’ve accidentally shrunk a full length pair, and any higher than mid-calf, and you’re suddenly into culotte/unfitted pedal pusher territory, which is very tricky and veers frumpy much more often than not.

Lucy304 · 06/05/2026 15:40

Thanks for all the responses so far. Mostly positive, but a lot of 'be careful how you style them.' So any suggestions as to how to do this? With thanks to @henlake7 for the vest top/ sandal advice already given.

I think they're frumpy. I'm not really a fan of Next, I think most of their stuff is frumpy. These are worse as they have an elastic waist.

Anouken · 06/05/2026 15:44

Good with flip flops and skimpy top for a beach vibe.

Lucy304 · 06/05/2026 15:45

@EnjoythemoneyJane and a few others that have mentioned the length... They come just above the ankle on me, like in the picture. I have some normal full length wide leg jeans but just thought the cropped ones looked a bit more summery.

Depends on if you’re slim, cool and willowy like the model or if you’d look like you were out in your PJs (me).

Retro12 · 06/05/2026 16:21

I think that they're frumpy in the colour and cut..IMO you may be able to get away with them with a tight top and a slip on sandal/flip flop. They remind my of that shade of blue, elasticated waist polyester trousers that the more mature lady wore in the summer (sorry)

hellswelshy · 07/05/2026 10:28

I love them personally. Let us know how you get on with them 😊

notnorman · 07/05/2026 11:09

They would be nicer in cream

G5000 · 07/05/2026 11:13

They look like you couldn't be arsed to get dressed in the morning and are still wearing your PJs that have shrunk in wash.

I don’t think they are denim - more of a chambray coloured cotton/linen trouser. If they are from Next, I recognise the top which also pairs with some shorts and they come in an alternative colour, definitely not denim.

People mentioning the length - does this not depend on how tall you are? Anything regular length which shows ankle length on the model is normally still too long for me .
