When someone complements you on an item of clothing and it’s second hand from Vinted or the charity shops, do you keep quiet and say thanks or tell them and how much it cost?

I tend to tell people how much it was and where from.

I usually say something like: oh thanks it’s x brand, and I got it on Vinted for a bargain!

Perrygreen · 05/05/2026 07:08

I always tell the truth.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 05/05/2026 07:08

I always tell the truth about where my clothes come from.
I think it's important for people to realise that charity shops, eBay and Vinted are good resources.

Recycling is nothing to be ashamed of.

Changingplace · 05/05/2026 07:08

I’ll always say it’s from Vinted/second hand, I’m happy to have got a bargain.

OvernightBloats · 05/05/2026 07:09

Loud and proud of buying second-hand. I love getting a bargain so will tell people if they ask.

Why pretend that you have bought the item from a shop? Don't see the point in lying about something like this.

DeposedPresident · 05/05/2026 07:09

I will always say. I'm not ashamed of being a good bargain hunter at all!

Plasticdreams · 05/05/2026 07:09

I get a lot of compliments on my clothing - people now say, let me guess charity shop!?

PawMaw · 05/05/2026 07:09

I always tell them, as I'm always very proud of my bargains and love when people ask.

Foxyloxy89 · 05/05/2026 07:16

I suppose it depends who's asking. I get a lot from Charity shops and Vinted and will happily tell work friends and family who ask. I have a group of friends who I know through my child however who are very image conscious and so I probably wouldn't tell them, I'd just say thanks if they complimented an outfit!

Britpopbaby · 05/05/2026 07:24

I am not ashamed of my charity shop bargains, far from it. Times have changed and I think it’s a flex to say that you got it from Vinted etc.

Always just the truth. I don’t know anyone who would be impressed by a fabrication.

Plus I’m hopeless at buying clothes for me on Vinted so always impressed when friends find great stuff for next to nothing.

StephensLass1977 · 05/05/2026 07:28

If they ask where I got it from, I will tell them. If they don't, I don't bother.

ImFineItsAllFine · 05/05/2026 07:28

I'll say eBay/Vinted/Charity shop if that's where I got an item from. Probably wouldn't say the exact price though, that would be overly specific.

mondaytosunday · 05/05/2026 07:29

Tell them! 90% of my DD’s clothes and all of her shoes/boots are from charity shops and she looks amazing (about 50% are from US thrift/charity shops).

GoldMoon · 05/05/2026 07:32

I'm yet to buy anything from a selling platform but I think it would depend who the person was . Family/ friend just tell . Maybe work colleague / friend of friend etc just the label .

Why, though? What difference does it make?

notacooldad · 05/05/2026 07:40

I just say thanks.

Im happy to tell if any one asks.

When Icompliment somone about a nice dress I dont need or want the low down of where it was from, how much it costs or if it has pockets. All I'm saying is that I like your dress, dont bore me with unnecessary details. I dont care.

IDontHateRainbows · 05/05/2026 07:42

The only reason I would lie would be if I was somehow embarrassed about buying second hand clothes and I'm not... are you OP?

LilyCanna · 05/05/2026 07:45

If someone says they like something I’m wearing I say “Thanks, I got it off Vinted” and if I admire something someone else is wearing they tend to say that too!

Rainbowcat77 · 05/05/2026 07:45

It wouldn’t occur to me to tell them how much it cost…I just don’t think people are that interested and are only complimenting to be nice really.
however I will often reply with “thanks, another Vinted bargain!!” Which often opens up a more general conversation.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 05/05/2026 07:46

I love telling people I got my outfit from Vinted because it’s true. I have gone from a size 14 to an 8/10 so Vinted has allowed me to refresh my entire wardrobe. I have bought LOADS and it’s fantastic. I rave about it.

honeylulu · 05/05/2026 08:00

Yes I would say proudly that I got it from Vinted/Ebay. Textile pollution from fast fashion is a huge problem so buying good quality second hand stuff is a good thing. If you inspire others to try the same, even better.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 05/05/2026 08:01

I tell them it’s M&S ( or whatever) and I bought it from vinted.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/05/2026 08:04

I think it’s the law to say when something is a bargain where you got it. Followed by whether it has pockets or not.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 05/05/2026 08:06

I’m compelled to share my bargains
