MOB - lost cause!

Dahlia1234 · 19/04/2026 17:33

I really need help.
DD gets married in September, nice do in a hotel.
I am a lost cause to dress. I'm 56, a short arse ( just under 5'1) and a size 24, so very chunky.
I'm really struggling to know what to wear. I've seen a dress that I know would suit me, but it's not formal enough (link attached). I will be wearing a hat and a bit of a heel as well. Don't like traditional MOB outfits ie dress with a jacket etc. I think I have a reasonably youthful appearance so don't want to look too mature as I don't think it's me. Ideally I'd like to wear dusky pink accessories to match the bridesmaids (did this at my other DD's wedding so would like to follow suit) so ideally whatever I choose should go with that. But oh my days, I'm struggling. Help me oh wise ones!!! https://valerievintage.co.uk/products/hearts-roses-london-curvy-kylie-green-polka-dot-swing-dress?variant=49656930730325&country=GB&currency=GBP&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&srsltid=AfmBOoo6FI84EoDg99VQX-JoglvsScf9yjerz8MYfFNLIgwR-WXAjOSe9Yw

Hearts & Roses London | Curvy Kylie Green Polka Dot | Vintage Style Dr

Forever inspired by the style of the 1950s, this stand out green vintage dress is beautiful with its bright white polka dots scattered all over the swing shape dress. The sweetheart neckline gives that feminine flare while being flattering and easy to...

I think you could dress it up sufficiently and especially if you would feel good in it.

Dahlia1234 · 19/04/2026 17:40

See I though so too, but so many people have said it's not formal enough. I'll be giving the bride away too so I guess I'll be even more in the spotlight! Ugh!

You can absolutely rock that lovely dress to make it look formal! Has the same vibe as this lovely number. https://shop.app/products/12022514843988/the-zip-pocket-dress-in-navy-polka-dot
Great shoes, great hair and a fab necklace. Please stay away from all the dreadful MOB stuff. Who says it's not formal enough?

Doggymummar · 19/04/2026 18:09

I love that dress, it's perf3ct, but when I was your size, just a smidge taller I loved a jumpsuit if that might feel more you?

justthecat · 19/04/2026 18:11

I sympathise I’m in a similar position, plus limited mobility so I also need to dress practical!
I think that dress will look great, how about a nice fascinator to add a bit of glam?

SliceofTosst · 19/04/2026 18:14

I totally think it's appropriate for MOB. You could totally dress it up with a fascinator.

Wear what you can rock not something that isn't your style or comfortable.

Go for it!

queenofnorthsheen · 19/04/2026 18:15

I think it’s lovely, but then again I love the “rockabilly” look! What about a lovely petticoat underneath and some expensive red lippy? Reckon it’d look amazing!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 19/04/2026 18:23

I think it deserves more than a fascinator. Maybe something like this?

Does the dress come in other colours? I'm struggling to see how pink will work with it but I'm happy to be proved wrong!

queenofnorthsheen · 19/04/2026 18:28

I think as far as headwear goes, you should have something with a net!

A few people to be honest, including the bride! 😂

I'd love to think I'd rock a jumpsuit but I know I wouldn't. I'm an apple shape which doesn't help, all tummy. All tummy and small boobs!!

Edited

Yeah the general consensus is that a dusky shade will work, I mean, I'd try another colour it not, for accessories

Yeah, I thought about getting a petticoat too. Would just give it a bit of oomph!

That’s a brilliant dress! A little pillbox hat with a birdcage veil and it’d be perfect!

Yiayoula · 19/04/2026 19:08

Maybe something like this, in a colour to tone with that lovely dress ?

MOB - lost cause!
SecretSquid · 19/04/2026 19:09

It's a gorgeous dress. How about a pillbox hat with a veil, it will fit the retro look and make the whole thing more wedding -y!
Tried to do a link but it was massive - company called ro rox has lots, on Amazon. Not expensive, you might want to spend more but will give you the idea.

SecretSquid · 19/04/2026 19:10

Ha somebody beat me to it while I was wrestling with links! 😅

Mumwithbaggage · 19/04/2026 19:36

@Dahlia1234 has the bride come up with any suggestions you're happy with? 😂Obviously, you wearing what you feel good in is going to make you enjoy the day the most.

Cremeul · 19/04/2026 19:41

Love that dress! How about something like this on your head?

MOB - lost cause!
Dahlia1234 · 19/04/2026 19:42

Haha no she hasn't bless her. Tbh, I did ask if she thought it was formal enough!

Dahlia1234 · 19/04/2026 19:45

Anyway, I've taken your advice and ordered the dress! Going to see what it looks like on and how I feel in it. Oh and see what DD thinks too 😊 Thanks for your support and advice

Dahlia1234 · 19/04/2026 19:45

That's pretty, a bit too rose gold though I think

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 19/04/2026 21:43

How about going to a seamstress and having something made for you?

redboxerclub · 20/04/2026 06:52

I do like the dress you picked but maybe to appease the bride a different colour or pattern would be consider more wedding-y
