How many dress sizes did you go up?!

My husband just emerged from the attic with all our summer clothes, and I've found all my tiny size 6 jeans, shorts, tops etc!
I tried to see how far I could get my shorts and....
Just past the knees :lol: thunder thighs!

I'm in size 10 maternity clothes and I'm 37+2 now. I'm heartbroken, I used to be so iddy and all I can think about is the chocolate I've put away today.
How many dress sizes did you ladies go up? Does my 2 sizes increase sound like I've gone out of control?
Cheer a girl up lol Cake

I'm not really sure how many dress sizes I went up as I was pregnant over last summer so I mostly wore floaty dresses or maternity leggings which are stretchy but I still bought them in an 8 which is my normal size. I did put on nearly 3 stone (not sure where lol) however it dropped off after birth so think a lot was swelling and water retention. A word of warning though, you might never get back into a size six as your bone structure can spread slightly. I had quite a few size 6 dresses and there is no chance they will fit around my ribcage and hips now, even though I have lost most of the weight!

TeddyBeans · 20/04/2020 17:19

I went up 2 - from a 14 to an 18. 2 years on I've settled at a size 16 but I haven't really been motivated to lose the weight. There isn't really an average, some bumps are bigger, some are smaller. Good luck and enjoy the newborn baby snuggles ❤️

OrganicSmorganic · 20/04/2020 17:21

I went from a size 12 to a size 18 but afterwards I dropped it all within 6mths and went to a size 10.

enchantedspleen · 20/04/2020 17:23

Awww thanks ladies. I'm so lost with all these ladies saying they stayed the same size as before pregnancy and were in their old jeans straight after and I'm just looking at my lovely old jeans saying.... really?!?

I'm happy to go back to a size 8, that doesn't bother me. I'm more upset at having to buy a whole new set of clothes!

(Also feeling like a bit of a failure, but just laughing at that tbh!)

Organic, you are my inspiration!

I'm planning on breastfeeding so I know I can't go too mad on a diet. Slow and steady I guess!

I was a size eight when I became pregnant but awful nausea caused me to eat basically nothing but carbs throughout the first (and some of the second trimester). When it was time to buy maternity clothes, I found a size ten to be a good fit. However, I’m now almost 36 weeks and have been at the chocolate during lockdown. I’m hoping I can stay in my current maternity clothes for the next four weeks without creeping up a size.

Echobelly · 20/04/2020 17:27

I'm sorry, I know you can't help how you feel, this really makes me want to scream that Size Ten Is Not 'Fat'. No, it's not as thin as you were but it is still slim, it is healthy, it is fine. This idea seems to have built up in the last 20 years that 10 is 'big' and no one used to think that.

I went from an 8/10 to more of a 10 after kids (and I'm barely over 5ft so some people would presumably feel massive at size 10) and in middle age I'm shifting toward as 12.

But I really wouldn't read too much into what size you take when pg, people's waists and boobs respond very differently to it - and I know very few people who didn't naturally get back close to their original weight (if not quite the same shape, be warned!) after pregnancy.

KittenVsBox · 20/04/2020 17:29

Err, none. But I started a lot larger than a 6!

14 before, 14 maternity from about 4 months pregnant and a few months afterward birth, then back into my 14s.

happymummy12345 · 20/04/2020 17:30
  1. Most of my clothes fit the whole time I was pregnant (t shirts, vest tops and tracksuit bottoms). I got the next size up in leggings, jeans and dresses, and nighties for labour. Never bothered with or needed maternity clothes at all. I was also back in my normal size clothes within a month of giving birth (tbh I only wore the bigger size still while I was recovering and my stitches were healing), I didn't actually need to wear them after.
No big round stomach after giving birth, was back to normal straight away. I put on 10kg throughout my pregnancy. Didn't eat much more than usual when I was pregnant either.
Pinkblueberry · 20/04/2020 17:31

I went up one dress size but then went back down a few months after DS was born. I’m completely on the same page as you about the clothes - my main reason for wanting to lose weight after DS was born was that I didn’t want to buy a whole new wardrobe and let all my old nice clothes go to waste!

Colouringinbook · 20/04/2020 17:32

None - stayed a 12 the whole way through and went back into regular jeans fairly quickly. I'm definitely wider than I was pre baby though!

Zoey92 · 20/04/2020 17:33

So far i haven't, ive just had to buy proper maternity jeans but im still in a 10, tbf i am all bump but my eating habits haven't really changed & for the first 12 weeks i was horrifically bad with nausea so lost a little then

31+1

Pinkblueberry · 20/04/2020 17:33

I'm planning on breastfeeding so I know I can't go too mad on a diet. Slow and steady I guess!

Everyone’s obviously different, but I lost most of the baby weight while breastfeeding - it must be the equivalent of a daily work out in terms of using up energy (or so I liked to think Grin) it was when I stopped breastfeeding that my weight plateaued and I had to put a bit more effort into shifting the last bit.

enchantedspleen · 20/04/2020 17:56

What I've learned is I think it really matters individually, from person to person. I'm only 5'2" with a teeny torso so my bump has been really big the whole way through on me (measuring fine though, just seems big on me). When lockdown is lifted I fully intend on returning to my sport (boxing)

Thank you to the pp who said a size 10 is still small, I really appreciate it! My body image has never been fantastic tbh, I actually think pre pregnancy I was in danger of becoming borderline anorexic. I was very, very thin.

Pregnancy has really made me think differently about my relationship with my weight and my health, I used to weigh myself nearly every day and if I wavered even by a lb I would "diet" to return. I will never go back to those days!

Honestly @enchantedspleen - if you were working hard to keep yourself as size 6, there's really no need. No one 'needs' to be a size 6, no one had even heard of size 6 except as a specialist petite thing until about 20 years ago as I recall. Nowt wrong with just being one of the few who is naturally size 6 whatever they do, but it's not worth dieting and self-sacrifice to make yourself and stay that way

kittykat7210 · 20/04/2020 19:24

@Enchantedspleen I feel you. I’m also 5ft2 I was a size 4 before my first pregnancy, I never returned to my size 4, instead I became a size 6-8. I too would diet if my weight increased (I wouldn’t go above 100lbs, so was mortified when after a year of breastfeeding I was still 115lbs, only 15lbs down from my final pregnancy weight)

I actually started this pregnancy a size 10, anti depressants and fertility medication bumped my weight up significantly, I’m still a size 10, and have thus far (34 weeks) gained 3lbs.

I threw away all of my first pre pregnancy clothes halfway through this one, they made me sad, like a failure. I will endeavour to try not to worry about the weight after this baby but I know it will be hard.

Before I was a mother I was one to weigh myself multiple times daily and I never wish to go back to that.

It might be quite hard for you as it was for me but I hope you manage, good luck xxxx

enchantedspleen · 20/04/2020 20:01

@kittykat7210
It's been a ride, but I'm so proud of myself so far. You've only put on 3lbs by 34 weeks??? Good gosh how have you managed that!

OP posts:
enchantedspleen · 20/04/2020 20:04

@Echobelly
Honestly? Size 6 is that new? I had no idea. I honestly let my diet control me, it was what happened sadly.
Thank you for your lovely comments, I honestly feel better about myself.

My thanks extend to everyone in this thread. We're all amazing!

I'm 26 weeks and probably about a size 12 now. All my clothes, every last item is an 8. My boobs are enormous. I could do with a fitting because I'm not even sure how big but I'm currently bursting out of 34 dd.

I know size 8 is quite small (I'm average height) but I was happy, it didnt require a lot of work or sacrifice to maintain it, and there is no way I'm buying a whole new wardrobe, so I'll be aiming to get back there.

kittykat7210 · 20/04/2020 20:30

@enchantedspleen

I had hideous morning sickness up until 22 weeks this time, and since then my lovely daughter has been in my ribcage stopping me feeling hungry/making me feel full after about a handful of food!

It’s not the route I’d recommend 😂

enchantedspleen · 21/04/2020 06:04

@kittykat7210
I dunno, with my pgp flaring like billy-oh I'll take yours! Grin wanna swap?

(Not trying to one up, just making light of the situation!)

I was a size 12/14 before pregnancy and put on about 4 stone 🤦🏻‍♀️ as I was an absolute uncontrollable sugar monster once morning sickness wore off! Lost about 3 stone within the first 2 months PP but the last stone has hung around. DS is now 10 months and I've settled at a size 16.

To be honest I haven't been too dedicated to losing the weight - but I'd ideally like to lose another 2 or 3 stone as I was heavier than I wanted to be when I got pregnant. So really need to kick start that!

DP and I have just decided to TTC DC2 so I'm hoping that now I've come off the pill I will feel less hungry and can start making sensible diet choices before we get a BFP!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!! x

HarrietM87 · 21/04/2020 12:23

I went up one size in maternity clothes, so was a 10 pre pregnancy and wore size 12 maternity. I put on 3 stone when pregnant and didn’t lose all of it until I stopped breastfeeding (the bf weight loss isn’t true for everyone!). I started this pregnancy half a stone up from my last one but trying hard to not to put as much weight on this time. It’s hard because eating is the only thing that helps with the nausea!

Valentina1402 · 17/05/2024 17:10

Hi, what swimwear if any, did you buy in the 2nd trimester? I've tried maternity and although I have a small bump they just look ridiculous. I will be 17 weeks pregnant when I go away (currently 14). Am I safe to go up 1 size? My boobs are fuller and I have put on a little weight. Don't know about anyone else but I've found looking for clothes that fit when it's mild a nightmare.

LizzeyBenett · 17/05/2024 18:29

If I was a size 10 before pregnancy I would of been delighted 😂
