What I don't get about Angela Rayner

Is how can she be a serious contender for PM, when she stood down as deputy PM for shady dealings?

It rendered her not good enough for no 2 but oh it's fine for her to look at the top job!

Does not compute, could someone explain?

Agreed. Stupid and dishonest isn’t the ideal combination for party leader and PM.

MushMonster · 11/05/2026 21:31

No, cannot get my head around this one either......

WhatAMarvelousTune · 11/05/2026 21:33

I’d assume she is hoping for HMRC to finish their investigation into her before any leadership vote (and obviously for the outcome to not go against her).

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 11/05/2026 21:36

Glad it's not just me!

That's extremely hopeful I would think @WhatAMarvelousTune

Doesn't look like she wants to run.

To be fair she'd be better than Ed Milliband

But so would a tub of lard.

In fact the lard.would do less harm.

@MsGreying 🤣🤣

I know. It's quite ridiculous. As a civil servant if I put a foot even a little out of line I would be fired for gross misconduct and definitely not given any payoff unlike our largely corrupt and incompetent MPs. I could not cope with Rayner as PM anyway so I really hope this never happens.

AbundantFlowers · 11/05/2026 22:50

She was advised by a legal person that her tax arrangements were fine! It’s not shady.
She’d be great. Much better than any man.

OnTheBoardwalk · 11/05/2026 22:51

You see I wanted to like her, a strong northern woman but she is just rubbish

“ any man”? Really?! So it’s just a matter of sex is it to be a good PM?

She was housing secretary - she was the one in charge of policy, yet fell afoul of policy. It is either gross incompetence or corruption, take your pick, but either should exclude her from consideration of a promotion.

asdbaybeeee · 12/05/2026 06:54

Everyone remembers Boris right??? If Angela was a man no one would care what she did

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 12/05/2026 07:20

And yet I’ve no doubt there’s posters on here who are keen to vote Reform into power. When one of their ‘cabinet’ is Nadhim Zahawi who paid a seven figure penalty to HMRC over his own tax ‘irregularities’. Call out AN if you feel that any such transgressions are fatal to future office but apply your logic consistently.

The bar is so fucking low.
Zahawi had to pay £5m, which included a £1m penalty for carelessness (I believe the issue of whether she has to pay a penalty, which would vary depending on whether they think she was careless or actually deliberate, or just the money owed is what HMRC are still deciding in the AR case).
Farage accepted his £5m “gift” and didn’t mention it.
Polanski didn’t pay council tax on his narrow boat.

westcott · 12/05/2026 07:32

It makes no sense. Labour has no hope with her as leader imo

HermioneWeasley · 12/05/2026 07:46

This is the calibre of our politicians now. Can you imagine the laughing stock we’d be on the world stage with her or Miliband?

THisbackwithavengeance · 12/05/2026 07:50

I can’t bear the actual look of her. Sly face and that single mother on benefits shtick. Fuck off.

CurlewKate · 12/05/2026 07:57

Oh good. Another snobbish anti Rayner thread.

Sadcafe · 12/05/2026 07:59

Imagine a country with Rayner in charge, probably worse than Farage , welfare doubled, illegal immigrants welcomed with open arms, here’s a thought, perhaps if parties throw out their leader mid term due to internal squabbles , it should automatically lead to a general election

It never did with the Tories.

I think Milliband is a very good candidate for a PM.
I do not see the problem with him.

I think this post highlights the problem with polarised politics today.

For example you state that she was "advised by a legal person that her tax arrangements were fine".

Now this is a categorically untrue statement. She did not seek advice from anyone - legal or accounting.

In her resignation letter, Rayner said "she deeply regretted her decision to not seek specialist tax advice given both her position and complex family arrangements."

https://www.lawgazette.co.uk/news/conveyancing-firm-denies-giving-rayner-tax-advice/5124370.article

Which then turns to the question of why would you deliberately post misinformation? For which there are two possible explanations:
a) you knew it was untrue but posted it in the expectation that if the same lie is repeated often enough then uninformed others will believe it and repeat it again.
b) You are the uninformed "other" that believed the lie and are simply repeating it.

This!

And we have Farage being given £5MILLION which he did not declare, and no one seems to give a shit.

Anyway it looks like Rayner isn’t going to put her name forward so there’s no need to worry.
