You probably know this but be careful if you find a cat

I found a pedigree, very friendly, popped it on Facebook

Then the owner contacted me on Facebook- wiyh photos of the cat, the back of my jouse and I met her wandering the streets looking for her baby

Returned safely

A couple of hours later there was a post on the same fb pages with a photo of the cat breed saying my baby is lost - I did a reverse search on the photo as I was fairly certain id returned my little one to her mummy and it was a stock photo

How awful! I could have fallen for it

It's a well known scam, never hand over an animal, take it to a vet or rescue centre for scanning.

someoneelsesshoes · 10/05/2026 12:46

I’m confused, did you give the cat back to the rightful owner?

KatyMac · 10/05/2026 14:32

I did, but I could have been scammed

Fortunately it was a neighbour with evidence- but I was lucky

What evidence did you or the neighbour have that proved who the owner was

catipuss · 10/05/2026 14:51

Get the chip scanned and find the real owner, posting on fb or anywhere like that is not a good idea.

Can you try again because I don’t understand. I thought you were saying someone claimed the cat that didn’t own it? Who sent a stock photo?

bluebelle1983 · 10/05/2026 14:57

I don’t understand this at all

squashyhat · 10/05/2026 14:57

YABVVU for using the words 'little one', 'baby' and 'Mummy'. It's a cat FGS.

Grghf · 10/05/2026 14:58

What??

KatyMac · 10/05/2026 15:05

I found a cat

I posted on fb that I found a cat

I was wandering around looking for the owner when I was messaged on fb by the owner

We met while we were messaging each other & she proved it was her cat

A few hours later someone on fb posted a stock photo of a similar cat (different colour) in an attempt to scam me and get the cat8

Next time, if there is a next time. Fgs take it to a vet and do things properly. Had it been a scammer anything could have happened to the poor animal.
It's been known that some bastards will try to breed from the animal and if it's been spayed will dump it.

How do you find a cat?

ChestnutSquash · 10/05/2026 15:26

What a strange and repetitive thread.
As one poster mentioned, ALWAYS get the chip scanned so that the pet can be returned to the correct person.

MissMoneyFairy · 10/05/2026 15:26

How did you find it, never hand over a animal, the only proof will be scan chip details, her saying its her cat or showing you photos is not proof of ownership.

How do you find a cat?

I normally find mine by standing on its tail in the dark.

Sunisgettinganewhaton · 10/05/2026 15:30

TW.. My young dd found a dcat and saw the ad on fb looking for it.. The woman turned up with a carrier and photos of the dcat in her home. Then proceeded to batter the poor thing. Dd attempted to confront her to be then threatened and intimidated. Sadly we had no address or I would have rang the police. I did contact several rescues to see if the dcat had come from them. She had 2 and wondered why they ran off. Hoping the second one found a nice new owner..
We won't get involved again which is a shame.

When you find a cat (or indeed any lost thing) don't post a picture of it on facebook. Post a reasonably accurate description of it and where you found it instead, but leave out one pertinent detail. When you are contacted, the person should be able to give you an exact description. Then you know they are legit.

MissMoneyFairy · 10/05/2026 15:31

If she had genuinely lost her cat she could have posted it herself on a local lost and found FB page, put posters up, never advertise you've found a animal.

KatyMac · 10/05/2026 15:32

I opened the door to go out and she ran in - so I found her; she wouldn't leave, she was scared of outside
