What time would you consider is "danger nap" territory?

Just that really!

My 18 month old has decided to fall asleep for their first nap of the day at 3:30pm so I'm dreading bedtime at 7pm.

What time do you consider it to be too late for a nap?

Bit past that stage now but I reckon you’ve got till about 5pm at that age.

justmyluck1234 · 31/07/2023 15:48

If my 19 month old sleeps anything past 2pm it interferes with his bedtime

ellenpartridge · 31/07/2023 15:48

That's definitely a danger nap. I would want them up by about 3pm!

My little one isn't allowed a nap past 4pm.

Baby is 10 months currently. I slowly lower it ever couple of weeks to a earlier time.

Darcy86 · 31/07/2023 15:51

I would say half hour or so at that time is doable if really tired and/or had an early start but might extend bedtime by half hour ish too. Ideally though I'd skip it and go for an earlier bedtime but not always possible! I like my 2yo to be awake from a nap by 3-3.30 latest in order for bedtime to be straightforward. But they're all different aren't they!

HippeePrincess · 31/07/2023 15:51

They’re all so different, my eldest would have been fine to go to bed at 7 as long as he’d been awake more than 1.5 hours, my middle child would have needed 3 hours awake, youngest is a rule unto himself.
you could wake after 45 mins if you’re worried about it being too late for a full nap?

trulyunruly01 · 31/07/2023 16:17

With mine if they weren't asleep by 2.30 then I knew it was going one of two ways - many tears before an early bedtime, or turn my back at 4.47 and hear gentle snoring.
And early bedtimes led to early risers here. Nightmare.
If it got to 2.00 (and I was able) the. It was full stop, cuddle up for a story and quiet time and hope that did the trick.

AvengedQuince · 31/07/2023 16:21

Still asleep past 2pm if on one regular nap. 20 minutes in the car after a busy day once no longer regularly napping was usually fine.

flowreed · 31/07/2023 16:23

I've always allowed my dc to nap when they're tired. Sometimes it meant they didn't sleep until later, but mostly it made no difference. I liked to let them listen to their bodies and if it was telling them they needed to rest then they should have that rest.

Hiddenvoice · 31/07/2023 16:24

My 15 month old can’t sleep past 3pm or she won’t go to sleep at half 7. Sometimes it’s really difficult to keep her awake!

AvengedQuince · 31/07/2023 16:27

Once he was two and no longer regularly napping then a nap longer than 20 minutes was a problem at any time. He napped at the childminder as they all did but then was up until 9pm on those days.

UnravellingTheWorld · 31/07/2023 17:07

I guess your child is awake now, but I probably would have woken him after 10-30 min (depending on what he'd done that day). Any time after 3 and I really don't like him to have more than 10 min. Yes he's tired, but I want him to recover overnight rather than late afternoon!

pambeeslyhalpert2 · 31/07/2023 18:41

I'd cap it at 4 and still do bedtime at 7 as it's not a full nap

AvengedQuince · 31/07/2023 19:10

Tired people absolutely should rest but be sensible about it. If you can't manage an early afternoon nap then a late afternoon nap can be kept to a 20 minute cat nap. It's the same concept for adults and children. If I was up very late/early or had a disturbed night, or I am jetlagged then a siesta is appropriate but if I need to sleep at 5 or 6pm I will set an alarm to keep it short, have dinner than an early night.

lavenderdilly · 31/07/2023 20:37

No sleeping past 3pm here! And sometimes even that's a little late for 7pm bedtime!

Nap is usually 11-1:30

SarahLHs · 31/07/2023 20:59

My 10 month old is a nightmare to get to sleep if i let her nap past half 3!

TinyTeacher · 31/07/2023 21:03

Depends on the child. My eldest that would be a disaster andshe'd be up till midnight. It was not totally unusual to be trying to get her to sleep at 1am. Utterly utterly shit as I had to be out of the house for work at 5.10....

My boys are nearly 3. Slept in the car yesterday 3pm-5pm. They were late to bed - 9pm. Not a disaster though!

Gowlett · 31/07/2023 21:08

My DS does short naps on demand, I don’t think about bedtime. Sometimes he does a three hour super-nap. Timing doesn’t worry me, as he goes to bed late anyway. His sleep has always been down to himself. I’ve never really regulated it. BF on demand when he was a baby, so I don’t think he’s much of a routine person!

Bibbitybobbitty · 31/07/2023 21:11

Most children after 2pm but my own youngest could sleep at 5 for 30-40 mins & as long as the total nap time wasn't longer than 1& 30mins it made no difference to bedtime . Her brothers would have been a awake all night.
