Universal Credit commitments not accepted due to lost phone, what next?

Me and my husband have joined UC claim. After some issues with our account we were asked to accept our commitments online. However, my husband lost his phone with sim and can't access his account. I got message saying if we won't accept it until 9th this month- our UC will stop (we usually get our payment on 9th every month).
I spent 2 days on phone with UC and they told me he can simply pop in to any Job Centre and they'll help him, no appointment needed. I called our local Job centre today, they said they won't accept any walk ins, we need to book an appointment via journal.
What to do? I left message on my journal but no one is replying.
Does anyone had this kind of experience? Should we try other Job Centres, not our local one?
Thank you

He needs to get access to his account on a different device. He can request his log in details from gov.uk if he can't remember what they are. Not accepting commitments does lead to a claim being closed

He knows his username and password. The problem is the code which they send via sms-he can't log in because he can't get a code....

He can try calling up to explain this and ask them to switch his preferred method of contact to email and get the code that way, or he can call them and try change his number so he can get the message to a new phone

Hammy19 · 06/05/2026 13:58

He would be best ringing up and asking them to get his case manager to ring him back urgently. Explain that his payment is going to be stopped if this isn't fixed asap. The call centre staff are not trained in the same way as the case managers and might not understand the issue properly

Just walk in anyway, someone in the building will have some common sense. I once had to do this when there was an internet outage in my area. They were very helpful.

bizzywizzy · 06/05/2026 14:05

I deal with hmrc a lot for clients
They are used to this, he needs to ring up and explain, they will take him through security and add a new phone number or assist with accessing the account without a phone code. When he gets in his account, add your phone number as backup. I have both office landline and my mobile as numbers for codes in my hmrc account.
Call at 8am when their lines open, waiting time is less.

Thank you everyone!
Me/he called uc helpline- we were both told to pop in to nearest Job Centre with ID to change his phone number linked to the uc account.
However, Job Centre says WE NEED TO HAVE AN APPOINTMENT, no walk ins.
We requested for appointment via our journal, still nothing.

Is it a contract SIM? You can walk in to your network shop with ID and get a replacement sim on the spot.

KaleidoscopeSmile · 06/05/2026 14:26

I like the way that OP is dealing with all this, rather than the bloke who lost his bloody phone.

If I was him and I didn't have an old spare phone I'd buy a very cheap mobile and convert my existing sim in my online provider account to a virtual sim which would give me access immediately. I've done it myself.

Very possible that he works full time and isn't able to take days off to sort this sort of crap out!

@Saddaughter999 this happened to someone I know. They couldn't sort it over the phone and did indeed have to go to the local jobcentre with ID - but the staff on the phone sorted them an appointment for that morning. Can you try the phone line again?

Like I say, he'll be much better off speaking to his case manager rather than the call centre staff. He needs to get a call back from them

Nobody needs to take a day off work to order a new sim online

Bromptotoo · 06/05/2026 15:13

Can he go to a library and log into his account on a public access computer?

The problem isn't the lack of an internet enabled device, it's recieving the 2FA code that UC text you before you can log in to your account. You have to have access to the phone number on your UC account to get the text.
