Looking for consumer advice please.
Woke up this morning to no telly or WiFi. Checked the sky account and they have cancelled our account! There is nothing outstanding.

DH called this evening and apparently we missed a payment in February which we did but paid it asap, the said they sent a cancellation email but DH assumed as we were up to date we could ignore that.

They are now asking us to pay a reconnection charge of £400!! But we don’t owe them any money!!

Advice welcome please.

Look for a new provider? Sky is expensive anyway.

I'm assuming that as they sent you an email you notify you of the cancellation that you won't have any redress on this. But a good place to ask would be Martin Lewis money saving expert forum.

Upwiththisiwillnotput · 11/05/2026 22:18

Oh trust me we will be looking for a new provider and Martin Lewis is very popular in this house. I just don’t understand how they disconnected us with no further warning when we don’t owe them anything???

When I cancelled my Sky I thought I would really miss it but in fact I didn’t at all. So much so that they tried to lure me back I wasn’t interested.

There’s a chance that they will drop the reconnection charge in a couple of weeks when they think you aren’t going to pay it.

Presumably it’s in your contract.

SqueakyFromme · 11/05/2026 22:20

But OP has no broadband, she can easily live without the TV, I’m sure the issue is more with her broadband

Ineedanewsofa · 11/05/2026 22:23

Sky are bastards, they owe us money due to not providing contracted services and have essentially said they aren’t going to pay and we can take them to court!
They are ‘allowing’ us to leave without charging a cancellation fee which apparently we should be grateful for?!

i haven’t read the contract, DH took it out and manages it but it does seem like an unfair contract term to me? If you get behind with utility bills they don’t cut you off without loads of notice!

No I can’t bloody manage without broadband, I WFH 2 days a week! Don’t much like being without telly either, although DH and I had a nice evening listening to old episodes of I’m Sorry I haven’t a clue, forgotten how funny that is 😆

Update: we will have to pay the robbing bastards as I need the internet for work—and I miss the telly— funny thing though, when I googled Sky have cut me off this thread popped up! I’m now famous 🤣

Why don’t you go with Virgin instead?

geoger · 12/05/2026 23:07

Sky broadband isn’t great - try Community Fibre or EE

shellyleppard · 12/05/2026 23:10

Youfibre or now TV are very good. Tell sky to do one Lol

Chellapeak · 12/05/2026 23:13

@Upwiththisiwillnotput why on earth would you go back with a company that did this. Make the most of it and go with someone else.

EmeraldRoulette · 13/05/2026 00:11

What was the date of your payment? And what's the date of the cancellation email they sent?

marcopront · 13/05/2026 04:45

How long after it was due did you make the payment?
What did the cancellation email say?

Cornishclio · 13/05/2026 05:13

It is a pain but if you were late paying that essentially means you broke the contract. Ignoring the cancellation email wasn’t a good idea anyway. Just find a new supplier but I would make sure they haven’t put a late payment marker on your credit file as a new supplier will check that. How late was the February payment?

Cornishclio · 13/05/2026 05:19

Utility companies are not allowed to just cut off water and electricity as they are essential. Broadband and telly isn’t. Doesn’t your husband pay by direct debit? Sounds like he needs to get on top of his finances. Surely you can still get freeview so Sky telly is not essential? £400 reconnection fee sounds extortionate when all they have to do is flip a switch. If you rely on internet for work that is a pain and one reason I would take over paying it myself if your husband is not good at managing bills etc.

Friendlygingercat · 13/05/2026 06:08

I pay my broadband and phone by direct debit so it doesnt get forgotten. The only thing I pay manually is council tax and I make the robbing barstewards wait for that.

LumpyandBumps · 13/05/2026 06:16

You can get a dongle and data sim for unlimited usage, which cost about £50 for a month last time I used one.
That would give you time to sign up with a different supplier. A £400 reconnection charge is ridiculous and makes it sound like they don’t want your custom.

Sesma · 13/05/2026 06:17

If you are all paid up and they have cancelled your contract why are you paying £400 to reconnect when you could just have your broadband with another provider, for TV you could get Now. If you have Sky Q make sure you send any boxes back or you will get charged. Were you out of contract, you don't mention that, if not you may face termination charges, maybe that is the £400.

Sesma · 13/05/2026 06:19

There is an accounts section on the Sky forums, maybe post on that for help

FrogsWormsandButterflies · 13/05/2026 06:42

Are you sure your husband is being honest with you about how many payments he missed?

I’m with Sky and when me and my ex spilt up I missed a lot of payments, all I had to do was pay the bill and it was reconnected immediately. No cancellation and no reconnection fee. I would check the account yourself as in all my years with Sky and having that period of missed payments they have never cancelled or sent me correspondence saying that they will.

That’s TV and broadband btw

ProudAmberTurtle · 13/05/2026 06:45

They've messed you around and ripped you off.

Why go back to them when there are better deals out there?

asdbaybeeee · 13/05/2026 07:53

I’d get free view and now tv so much cheaper.

frecklejuice · 13/05/2026 07:54

Get broadband from somewhere else and a dodgy fire stick, it will save you a fortune.
