How much goes in the stockings?

Just because I’m nosy Grin

Ours usually end up with about 30 items in, however it’s not really 30 presents because I separate stuff out so it fits. So for example for the littlest a small happyland set would be 5 stocking fillers or for the three year old a set of pj masks figures is 5 stocking fillers. I tend to put small toys/games/other items that I’d otherwise be giving as a proper present in rather than buying specific stocking fillers. Then they usually just get one present from us.

There’s quite a lot of edible stuff and useful stuff too, especially for the teens.

I never realised until I joined mn how very differently everybody does Christmas!

How ever much I can fit Grin

Anything left over just gets given from DH and I.

GordonBrockman · 30/09/2019 13:48
Grin I like your style!

We just have stocking sized stockings so it's just things like a chocolate orange, pants/socks, bubble bath, magic facecloth, fizzy drink and a comic, some little figures like lego/playmobil, chocolate coins.

666onmyhead · 30/09/2019 14:13

Ha ! I was coming on to say up to mid thigh !!!

GordonBrockman · 30/09/2019 14:19

Ours are reasonably sized but not huge, that’s why I take stuff out of the packaging Smile

We haven't actually done stockings since we moved to Germany Blush but for me things like a Happyland set wouldn't be a stocking filler, that would be a main present. The stockings are really just a time filler to allow parents to wake up a little bit more gently, so they mainly contain sweets and novelties, nothing I'd be really excited to give them.

I suppose a small Happyland set broken down into parts isn't that extravagant of a stocking filler but I am often agog at what gets suggested as stocking fillers on here. I would probably do about 5-8 presents in it (and that includes a pack of chocolate coins and a satsuma) and the whole thing filled would cost about £10-15.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/09/2019 14:24

Loads, but it's small useful stuff. Last year they had
Collectible figure
Small beanie toy
Notebook
Toiletry bag with toothbrush, tooth paste, plasters, bubble bath etc
Book
Badge for their camp blankets
Chocolate
Gingerbread man
Orange
Craft kit

And probably more. I lose control on stockings.

GingersAreLush · 30/09/2019 14:57

Mine get 10 items each. If I choose a number it means I don’t get them useless stuff that goes in the bin.

CupCupGoose · 30/09/2019 15:02

I put quite a lot in mine as I really enjoy doing them. I don't put in rubbish or filler stuff that will get chucked in the bin though so I probably spend quite a lot on stocking fillers.

Dandelion1993 · 30/09/2019 15:09

I spend £10 on stockings.

Normally get some stuff from pound land to keep them amused, tub of sweets and bubble bath.

likeridingabike · 30/09/2019 16:44

I probably put about 8 things in a stocking, they tend to be mainly practical so DD gets things like a hairbrush, hair bobbles, a bath bomb, a sheet mask, body spray and some chocolate.

I'm doing a stocking for DP this year, I'm planning to get him some hair wax, aftershave balm, some chocolate, a nice pen, maybe some nail clippers (joke gift) and maybe some socks.

GordonBrockman · 30/09/2019 17:37

Ah I see what you mean Bertie, although when I was growing up stockings were the main event and were the most anticipated part of Christmas rather than just a time filler. If I saw them that way mine would probably just contain a comic, some sweets and a satsuma Grin

I do mean a set like this rather than a massive play set. But yes they contain a couple of proper presents rather than just fillers I suppose.

I have dd15 and ds13 and put about 10 things in. Chocolate, bath bombs, body shop stuff for dd, books, a 'nice' present like Not on the High Street jewellery. I don't like buying novelty stuff - it seems like a waste. I also don't like buying practical things like toothbrushes as I think they are a bit disappointing.

TeenPlusTwenties · 30/09/2019 18:03

About 8 things.

traditionally something like:

  • chocolate coins
  • bath bombs / body spray
  • T-shirt or similar (something a bit special)
  • magazine
  • some other sweets / chocs
  • 3 other random things
ExpletiveDelighted · 30/09/2019 18:08

Chocolate coins, gingerbread man, three or four small gifts such as a card game, bouncy ball, earphones, novelty socks, bath bombs. We don't do satsumas.

Cherryrainbow · 30/09/2019 18:26

Think I'm doing away with stockings this year and doing a mini treat selection of xmas chocs and stuff instead

littleduckeggblue · 30/09/2019 18:35

Plasters and fizzy drinks?! Confused
Gosh just shows that everyone has totally different ideas of Xmas stockings.
Ours are pretty traditional stuff
Bath bombs
Smellies
Book
Sweets

EnglishRose1320 · 30/09/2019 18:43

Mine are totally over the top and I know it! However they only get two presents under the tree from us and I don't go over budget, I also shop gradually from about the end of September.

They each get 20 presents
5 gifts
5 books
5 useful things
5 edible things.

When they were younger they also had a soft toy sticking out the top.

Things don't have to be new though, books often come from charity shops. Ds1 has a particular interest that often means the items he wants come from eBay second hand. Sometime I find a nearly new t-shirt to pop in as well.

This year I am really focusing on just getting what they will truly love and use, each year I have managed to resist a bit more when it comes to gimmicky things/plastic tat etc.

Stompythedinosaur · 30/09/2019 18:44

I put in 10 small things. 3 will be sweets or choc (there is always chocolate coins). Normally a teeny craft kit from hobby craft (the ones they do for £1 in the sale), a notebook and pen, a small cuddly toy (pokes out of the top), and I vary the rest. I normally spend around £25.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 30/09/2019 18:49

Mine have 7-10 things. They come and bring their stockings and sit on our bed and we take turns to open something, it's quite a sweet little part of the day. DH and I do a stocking for each other usually too.

It's usually a book, tube of sweets, smellies for DD, Lego blind bag, key rings, rubber ducks etc..,

I just buy presents that I think they'll like and all the small stuff goes in the stocking. I might add some sweets/chocs & a pair of socks(/similar shit gift) that they wouldn't get if they didn't have a stocking.
My DM is not from the UK so we only had stockings if staying at DF's house. I remember one year getting a New Kids on the Block cassette album in my stocking & I was chuffed to bits! Blush

LilyFromTheValley · 30/09/2019 19:07

HmmConfusedBlush

Bluewavescrashing · 30/09/2019 19:09

Mine are both getting

Choc coins
Orange
Chocolate orange
Pants
Notebook
Novelty pens
A wooden puzzle
AA batteries! We never end up with enough!

SaveMeBarry · 30/09/2019 19:17

About 10 - 12 items. This year their stockings are a bit more expensive but I think that's because a) they're getting older and their tastes are more specific and b) I'm conscious of not buying 5 minute wonders so aiming for useful but still fun items.

This year I've so far got gel pens, character/animal clip on book lights, hair stuff, small LEGO set, remote control colour changing light bulbs, Nat Geo 6 in 1 torch thingie, card game and they'll also have some edibles.
