Thoughts on Rupert?

I really like the name Rupert. It’s been a name that’s I’m liking more and more.

I’m aware it’s quite a marmite name and I’m not sure if it would bother me if family/friends didn’t like it.

Rupert is dreadful. It’s such a wet and slightly comedic name.

SpiceGirlsNeedAComeBack · 27/04/2026 12:17

It’s a lovely name.

MegMortimer · 27/04/2026 12:17

I rather like it but as you say, I reckon there are some who wouldn't like it.

Notmyreality · 27/04/2026 12:18

Personally I couldn’t..bear..it.

Agree with this. Sorry OP.
If you like it though, go for it.

piloswi · 27/04/2026 12:23

50/50 so far so definitely showing it’s marmite. I don’t think it would be wildly out of place where we live.

I’m not bothered about the Rupert the bear association as I don’t think that particularly negative and most under 30ish has probably never heard of it

Weeelokthen · 27/04/2026 12:24

Sorry, imo, it's a weak, wet name

Luddite26 · 27/04/2026 12:28

Prefer it to all the dragged up names like Arthur Quite liked Rupert Everett and Rupert Campbell-Black!

13RidgmontRoad · 27/04/2026 12:32

+1 for wet and slightly comedic.

TerracottaBowl · 27/04/2026 12:33

Well, if you're not bothered about family and friends potentially disliking it, I'm not sure what posting on here is going to bring you? I mean, I'm with you on that -- all four grandparents loathed the name we gave DS, but, bluntly, given the names they gave their children (including DH and me), it was hardly a surprise or anything that bothered us for a second.

I don't personally like it, despite the only Rupert I've ever known personally being devastatingly handsome, nice and a half-blue in croquet. He was universally addressed as 'Rupes', if that bothers you.

ArabellaWeird · 27/04/2026 12:35

I wouldn't trust a Rupert as far as I could throw one.

BarnacleBeasley · 27/04/2026 12:37

To me it sounds quite performatively posh, which is fine if that is the effect you are going for. If you don't want the class connotations, that's when you'd have to rethink. Also it does make me think of bears, but you are probably right that fewer children these days will be familiar with him.

DeposedPresident · 27/04/2026 12:38

I don't mind it but it's hugely popular among DH's various friends. Ages 40s-early 60s.

He went on a sailing trip once with 4 friends. I asked him who he was going with and he said 'With some people called Rupert'. It made me laugh because it was true. (Although, to be strictly honest only 3 of the 4 were Rupert).

I'm not sure how popular it is with younger people? There is 1 in DS1s class (aged 16) and 1 in the class below, but I've not heard it more recently than that. It has the advantage it's not ubiquitous and everyone knows how to spell it.

Silverbirchleaf · 27/04/2026 12:39

I really like it, and it seems to be gaining popularity locally.

Specialneedsnightmare · 27/04/2026 12:40

It makes me think of Rupert Grint as well as Rupert Bear.

It's not terrible but I wouldn't use it. Much better names imo

AuntChippy · 27/04/2026 12:41

I like it. I know of a baby Rupert and a 23 year old Roo (not sure if that’s his actual name).

I said I’m not sure if it would bother me that they may dislike it. That’s what is stopping me choosing it currently. I need to decide how I feel about other people’s potential opinions on it. So hearing opinions helps decide how I feel

I like it

but it did have its day

plus people say “oh don’t be a Rupert”

non of that would put me off

UnPetitDunPetit · 27/04/2026 12:48

It's a lovely name. I would have loved it for one of our DC but our surname is Campbell so we thought better of it 😅

ChopstickNovice · 27/04/2026 12:49

I like it! But it would probably get shortened to "Rupe/Rupes" as a poster has mentioned above. You always have to bear in mind what a name can be shortened to, unless you are me and tell people immediately that you dislike your name being shortened.

Keroppi · 27/04/2026 12:49

I love it, it was a potential for one of mine but went with Francis instead. Another name people on MN/reddit thought was wet and weak! I think i just like the soft, sweet names. I loved Sidney, Julian etc
Love Roo for short
Also liked Rufus if I had a redhead!
It's a solid name for a nice boy
Not many bear associations nowadays

DramaAlpaca · 27/04/2026 12:50

I strongly dislike this one, sorry!

Once you have named your child you will never know if people dislike it (unless your family and friends are rather rude). I don't think there are any names that everyone likes - the main thing is whether you and your partner like it.

tara66 · 27/04/2026 12:51

Sorry -no - for a grown man - no.
For a little boy - OK.
But he will be a grown man for 80 + years possibly.
