Allie as a first name?

I absolutely love Allie for a girl but I know that it’s normal a nickname. However I don’t like any of the longer names and even so, a lot of the abbreviations go to Ali which I’m not keen on for a girl. Thoughts please.

Alison
Alexandre
Abigail
Annalise/a
Calliope
Thalia
Caroline

Also more options for Callie/Hallie

Whataretheodds · 17/10/2023 19:57

If you were to call her Alison, for example, I think you could establish Allie as the speling rather than Ali

Moveoverdarlin · 17/10/2023 19:57

People will assume her name is Alison. Which was a pretty boring name in 1965, and too dated for a little girl now. It will also be spelled as Ali by most people.

Lamelie · 17/10/2023 19:58

Keep looking for a longer name that can be shortened.
Alexandra/ Alex/ Alexandria
Alyssa
Alice
Alicia
Alannah
Alisha
Aaliyah
Alma
Alison

Oo Talitha would work:
Talitha is a girl's name of Aramaic origin that means “little girl.” In the Bible, Jesus is believed to have brought a young girl back to life by uttering the phrase “talitha cumi.”

GroanWoman · 17/10/2023 21:21

I have an Alexandra who's known as Ali... though Allie works just as well as a shortening.

As a freestanding name Allie seems a little... incomplete.

theduchessofspork · 17/10/2023 21:40

I think she’ll prefer having a full name - it’s v nicknamey

Other than Alice, Alicia, Alexandra and Alannah

Allegra
Alexis
Alba
Alina

Also I guess names like Adelaide, Adela, Annalisa, Leila

User6761 · 17/10/2023 23:50

I think it's a bit too informal as a full name - but I think it can be a shortening for any 'Al' girls name. I wouldn't worry about it being spelt Ali vs Allie vs Ally - you can choose that spelling and people will follow. (I know two adult Olivers - one is Olly, the other Ollie - no one mixes up their spellings

Alison/Alyson
Alexandra
Alice
Alicia
Allegra
Alyssa
Alexia

Allegra or Allison would be my choice - Allie

GeorgeBeckett · 18/10/2023 04:54

I think you can do just Allie in 2023 if you like.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 18/10/2023 04:59

I really like Allegra nn Allie. That’s gorgeous!

You could probably just do Allie nowadays. But I do find it a bit incomplete and rather cute. The latter would probably really bother me…

MerryChristmasToYou · 18/10/2023 06:41

I think people would hear it as Ellie depending on the local accent.
Allegra is pretty. Alison is too but makes me think of someone of about 60 years old.

Capz · 18/10/2023 07:11

I'd just go with Allie. I know an adult Allee and nobody assumes she is Alison. And if they did she would correct them and move on? No different to Bobby being assumed as Robert, Joey as Joseph etc. Some people like 'full' names, I personally think call them what you want them to be known as.

Saucepan7 · 18/10/2023 07:20

Go with Allie. It's nicer than the long versions and if we can use Ellie, why not Allie? I'd like to be called Allie.

Enko · 18/10/2023 07:22

I actually quite like Allie on it's own.

Molly54320 · 18/10/2023 07:23

I like Allie!

chocolateisavegetable · 18/10/2023 07:27

how about Alianna but putting an extra L in there?

MerryChristmasToYou · 18/10/2023 09:15

Good grief no. Allianna. Looks like Allium and will get said as Allie-Arna.

Lamelie · 18/10/2023 09:28

Allie on its own is lovely- I’m one 🥰
my full name has been mentioned upthread akd I like it, but I think Allegra is wonderful, lovely meaning, quite posh, unusual but not yoonique.

Sunnydayy · 18/10/2023 09:55

Can I ask if your full name should typically be shorted to Ali rather than Allie? If so, has anyone questioned why you’ve spelt it Allie? Thanks 💗

I wouldn't worry about assumed shortenings. Just do it how you want to. For example, no one questions why Catherine gets shortened to Kate or Margaret to Peggy.

Sunnydayy · 18/10/2023 10:27

That’s a good point. Thank you
