Wrong address on school register

Tryingiton · 18/06/2026 19:27

I work in a school. If a parent has not changed their address on the school register because they moved in with their boyfriend ( had another baby with him ) almost two years ago would you ask for their current address? I suspect it’s because they have not declared they are living together. We have had lots of dads over the years who lived with their mothers ?? Except they didn’t. I live locally so it’s not a well kept secret.
Do you know anyone who has done the same thing ? Would you report them to UC?

Why ? Should we as a nation continue to pay increased UC to someone who is obviously playing the system?

Absolutely ask for it.

BennyHenny · 18/06/2026 19:31

I’d check you’re not breaking any data protection laws before you start disclosing someone’s address. And no, I wouldn’t report them based on gossip, it didn’t occur to me to change my address with the school when we moved house as my email and phone number stayed the same.

hay5689 · 18/06/2026 19:31

I’d mind my own business and maybe ask for some data protection/GDPR training.

Goldengirl123 · 18/06/2026 19:32

Yes. It’s benefit fraud

It’s none of your business

if you report you are breaking the law. GDPR

Loulou4022 · 18/06/2026 19:33

Legally the school need the correct address for the child, however schools priority is the child and their family not if they are claiming UC!!

SpottyDeckchair · 18/06/2026 19:36

If you use the fact that your job gives you access to people's personal & confidential information for any purpose other than the legal reasons you hold the data (in this case for school issues) you are breaking the law.

If found out you will loose your job and you are likely to be prosecuted resulting in a fine or time in prison.

Tryingiton · 18/06/2026 19:37

Obviously I’m not going to actually report her( unless I can work out how to do it anonymously ). If UC actually checked addresses with schools they could really crack down on benefit fraud.

If found out ? I’d get someone else to report it . Can’t be that difficult to cheat the system. Thousands are committing benefit fraud every day !

It should be fine under gdpr to ask if her file needs to be updated and ask if old info should be deleted. You absolutely cannot use the information you have access to for any other purpose though beyond the limited info the school needs for legitimate purposes.

MauriceTheMussel · 18/06/2026 19:40

You obviously hate her and have some sort of weird personal vendetta against her. So, pretend we all gave you permission and crack on being a vindictive busybody.

I shall definitely be asking her for her new address to add to the records.

Getting someone else to report it would be breaking the GDPR law

enpeatea · 18/06/2026 19:41

I used to work in school admin. We asked for updated info annually. As far as I know schools don’t pass on this information to DHSS. Upto date information is important

Tryingiton · 18/06/2026 19:42

I don’t hate her. I dislike those who play the system and don’t work because the rest of us fools are paying for them. Thankfully children do eventually turn 18! And then the money train stops.

I don't understand how failing to tell school her new address means she must be committing fraud

Because she needs school to she’s difference address to the new boyfriend . We have had several cases of daddies living with their mummies over the years. Except they don’t. It’s to maximise benefits.

And benefit fraud isn’t ?

we both know it is

but you’re not allowed to break the law just because she is. Or you think she is.

MissAmbrosia · 18/06/2026 19:45

Breach of GDPR would probably lead to a massive investigation and can be subject to mega fines. Just send a mail to all parents asking them if their info is correct and then don't give it another thought.

hay5689 · 18/06/2026 19:46

I think you need a new job. Preferably one with no access to people’s personal information. You seem to be way too invested in this woman considering you only suspect her of benefit fraud and have no hard evidence.

Numbersaremything · 18/06/2026 19:47

It's very easy to report suspicions of benefit fraud anonymously online. You are simply adding to a jigsaw puzzle of information held. No information which could identify the whistleblower is taken.
