Dd, 7, told me today that the teacher told her she’d been naughty but she didn’t know why.
She said she had lots of papers with kids names on (around four names, including Dd’s ) and read out their names and said they had been very naughty today. She didn’t say why or what they’d done. Dd doesn’t know why and says she wasn’t told off for anything

Does this seem odd

This sounds like it is not the full version of events. You need to speak to the teacher.

Would you bother to chase up or just let it go?

This seems like something that probably didn’t happen TBH. I’m all for holding schools to account but I think the first thing I might do is check with the teacher. It’s possible that your daughter misunderstood what was going on.

Moveoverdarlin · 02/06/2026 16:54

Something and nothing. I’d let it go.

I’d mention it at drop off.

I would probably ask the Teacher but it sounds like half a story

Loulou4022 · 02/06/2026 16:57

This very much sounds like you’ve had half a story here. If you’re really bothered by it mention it to the teacher. It’s also highly unlikely the teacher will have used the term ‘naughty’ it’s a very frowned upon word in education!

Shinyandnew1 · 02/06/2026 18:12

What do you mean…lots of pieces of paper with names on or four and she read them all out?

If you’d daughter is upset, I might ask the teacher about it.

Seems like the teacher had written down on pieces of paper the children who were ‘Naughty’

Hmm… I’d like to meet the teacher still using the word “naughty” in 2026.

You definitely don’t have the full story. If you are going to question it further, and I might just out of curiosity, be sure not to go in defensively, rather open to finding out more.

PigeonDuckGoose · 02/06/2026 21:12

Speak to the teacher, I voted YABU because she is 7 who knows what happened. You either think it's nothing and let it go, or you raise it with the teacher. Just ask them at drop off/pick up of you are worried.

Lmnop22 · 02/06/2026 21:12

I honestly struggle to understand how someone could get this worked up over some half story from a 7 year old that doesn’t really matter anyway…

My 6.5 year old often comes home with random tales of this or that - being moved in class when he wasn’t the one talking or having something other than the lunch option I selected or whatever - I don’t even give it much thought! True or not, it’s just one of those things kids need to learn happen sometimes and not to get worked up and be a total Karen about!

AhMh67 · 02/06/2026 21:13

A teacher wouldn't say naughty. It sounds bizarre and untrue. You would take a child aside individually and tell them their behaviour is unacceptable explain what they did and how to fix it .

Motheranddaughter · 02/06/2026 21:16

I would listen to my child and ask the teacher about it in a calm non judgemental way

TheWyldRover · 02/06/2026 21:17

Doesn’t sound like you have the full story, I’d honestly not think anything of it. If it really worries you or your daughter is upset I’d speak to teacher, but I’d probably just let it go.

Arlanymor · 02/06/2026 21:18

Yes it does seem odd. So I would ask the teacher as it sounds like you are getting the edited highlights...

Oneofeachclub · 02/06/2026 21:25

Whilst it may be rare for teachers to use the word naughty, unfortunately it does happen so please don't dismiss what your daughter has told you on the basis that a few posters seem to think this can't have possibly happened. I would suggest following up with the teacher to clarify what has happened and go from there.

WorkCleanRepeat · 02/06/2026 21:28

I dont know a primary school teacher that would use the word naughty in a classroom.

There is definitely a misunderstanding here somewhere.

Anx this is why they should still have the cane...kids wouldn't come home full of bollocks and parents believing it...if the kid knew they'd get one with the cane they'd think about what they were saying

Ok ,interesting response

Bushmillsbabe · 02/06/2026 21:30

As others have said, you will probably be getting one angle of what hapenned. I can guarantee that every child if on their own would give a different version.

My daughters year 5 class had a whole hoo ha earlier this year when supossedly a teacher called a group of boys who were mucking around 'stupid'. It was all over the class what's app group and there were at least 10 different versions of what hapenned. No child was lying, but every child has a different perspective.

If your child is upset, maybe gently speak to the teacher. Otherwise I would leave it

troothfairy · 02/06/2026 21:30

Tell her it’s the list that goes to Santa, that should sort her out 😁

Springtimeinsunshine · 02/06/2026 21:55

She didn’t say why or what they’d done.

Of course she would have been told but your DD wasn't listening as most seven year olds don't listen properly, or are you trying to tell me your seven year old is never distracted or chatty?

Very glad I live in a country where corporal punishment is outlawed - including smacking. It doesn't make anyone think about what they are saying - it just makes them scared to say anything at all. Lots of evidence to show this - hence why it's outlawed in so many countries. But you know better I guess?
