To think marrying someone who has already been married and divorced 3 times is a very, very bad idea

I saw that Earl Spencer was on the front pages of some of the papers today for marrying a 4th wife.

AIBU to think that it is probably very unwise to marry someone who has already been married and divorced 3 times? Just that. Not even thinking about all the other stories that whirl around this particular individual but just the very fact that if you have been married and divorced 3 times that seems like a giant whale sized red flag to me.

Maybe I'm missing the romance of it all - or maybe not!

He has money - rich men wll always find a replacememt.

Maybe she likes the lifestyle he provides, and even if it doesn’t last she’ll probably get a nice pay out.

Yes, I know I sound very cynical.

PrimeSeason · 19/05/2026 16:53

‘So what was it that first attracted you to the wealthy and titled Charles Spencer..?’

Overtheatlantic · 19/05/2026 16:53

It must be the title and the money that keep attracting these women. He’s so damaged.

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 19/05/2026 16:54

Or he learns from each previous marriage and this time he's found the ideal woman?

Mumofteenandtween · 19/05/2026 16:57

Failure rate of first marriages are about 40% - 50%. Second is 60%. Third is 73%.

They don’t track 4th marriages. Presumably because outside soap operas they are very rare. Even Boris has only had 3 wives!

Look, Gregg Wallace is on his fourth marriage and he’s living his best life!

Pilgrimlady · 19/05/2026 16:58

I think he suffered abuse during his childhood, I'm sure I remember reading about it, might have been at boarding school. Who knows whether he has struggled with this in the past and it might have affected previous relationships. I wish him and his new wife every happiness and hope this one works out for him.

I know someone who has been married 4 times! Two of the marriages were to the same person though.

Yeh. Getting sacked for being a sleaze

MegMortimer · 19/05/2026 17:10

Some relationships have a shelf life, some people change through the years and have different wants/needs. Different partners may suit us at different points in our lives.

I don't necessarily have any more respect for people who stay in dead marriages for the sake of 'respectability' or 'what will people say if we split up' .

NotTodayBeyonce · 19/05/2026 17:15

I’m sure Penny Lancaster must be a fourth or fifth wife for Rod Stewart, and they seem to have had a long and happy relationship.

But yes, you’re probably mostly right. I wouldn’t.

ClayPotaLot · 19/05/2026 17:16

It seems like a bad idea if what you are searching for is a life partner and stability. But if you are just living life in the moment, having a fantastic time with them and are okay with change (and probably drama) yourself, it's probably quite a good idea.

An acquaintance of mine is on their 5th…

3 divorced 2 died. No. 5 should be ok, but I really wouldn’t want to be no. 6!!

ForPinkDuck · 19/05/2026 17:18

The upper classes need something to do with themselves.

Were the two that died beheaded? I feel a new rhyme coming on!

HeddaGarbled · 19/05/2026 17:21

Oh, I don’t know, philanderers do age out eventually. I know someone who married, at the age of 30, a man in his 50s who’d been divorced twice. It was a happy marriage and she ended up a wealthy youngish widow.

Miranda65 · 19/05/2026 17:24

I totally agree.... not to mention a couple of other fiancees/partners.
I hope they will be happy, but it strikes me as a triumph of hope over experience!

BauhausOfEliott · 19/05/2026 17:25

It would probably ring alarm bells for me, yes. But I expect it depends on what you want from a marriage really. And I’ve found that when I’ve looked up famous people on Wikipedia and they’ve been married several times, they’ve very often still been married to their final spouse when they died.

Newyearawaits · 19/05/2026 17:25

My experience of dating divorced men with young children is that it doesn't take too long to work out why their wives divorced them.
Cynical but true

WallaceinAnderland · 19/05/2026 17:26

After 3 divorces I expect he will have his assets tied down so it won't be for financial gain. Maybe for status?

Ive read this statistic and always been surprised by the second part (you'd think people woukd be older and wiser!) I wonder what the reasons are.
