AIBU to think this children’s party was a bit over the top?

We went to a 6th birthday today. Bouncy castles, face painting, animal man etc. also a candy floss stand and a popcorn stand. Then it was party food lunch. Afternoon tea style cake stands with sandwiches, cakes, biscuits marshmallows and an additional cupcake tower. Fruit shoots & jugs of squash. Then party games to win lolly pops. Then we took home small sack of pick n mix, chocolate bar and a slice of birthday cake.

My kids eat really quite healthy most of the time with plenty of treats opportunities. I'm not against eating sugar at parties but surely there should be point that maybe you are putting a bit too much on. Yes it's my job to parent. It's not that easy at a party.

I half expected the tortoise and the owl to be decorated in Haribo

The only thing there I would take issue with was the lolly pops as I would happily see them banned for children!

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 17/05/2026 19:53

That's the kind of spread that someone who's never had to mop vomit out of a bouncy castle would put on.

44PumpLane · 17/05/2026 19:53

It's entirely up to you what you allow your child to eat, but don't be off about other people's birthday party set ups, it sounds like a great time for the kids!

Chocolattcoffeecup · 17/05/2026 19:54

I'm not sure what the issue is. You can always limit what your child has.

Luckydog7 · 17/05/2026 19:54

Wow. It does sound a lot for my neck of the woods but take it as a lovely treat for the kids and pray that this isn't the norm for your group of friends so you won't need to emulate!

It’s a party, they are kids, don’t overthink it. Let them have fun! 🥳

Lordofthebantams · 17/05/2026 19:55

It was a great time but it was excessive. Two lots of cakes, candy floss, popcorn, sweets, juice, biscuits and marshmallows in 2 hours, takes the er biscuit.

Nothing to get worked up about here. Don't let your kids eat the party bags stuff they came away with .
I do hope you remembered to thank the hosts for the invitation.

Londonrach1 · 17/05/2026 19:56

Yabu. It's a party.

Helpforsummer · 17/05/2026 19:56

Sounds like a regular Thursday tea time at my mother in-laws 🫠🤣

AgnesMcDoo · 17/05/2026 19:57

Sounds like party food to me. 🤷‍♀️

WallaceinAnderland · 17/05/2026 19:58

Sounds fab but what's an animal man?

Overthebow · 17/05/2026 19:58

It does sound a lot for a 6 year old party, most of the ones round my area have fruit and veg as well as some cake and sweets, but as a one off I wouldn’t have minded. Sounds like a fun party for them.

happysinglemama · 17/05/2026 19:59

It’s a party 🎉

Lordofthebantams · 17/05/2026 19:59

I've been to a fair number of parties but usually it's party food lunch, either a BBQ or pizza or beige food, plus crudités, fruit and then birthday cake. Party bag with a mini bag of sweets and plastic toys.

What is it that has upset you? Is it that your child ate more unhealthy food than you would like? Or is it that you instinctively feel that too much indulgence/spoiling/treating is bad for children?

Whatever the nature of your uneasiness - it’s one party, it won’t harm your child in any way. If you really hated it, then decline the next invitation from that family. They haven’t done anything wrong, though.

A man that brings animals for the kids to see and pat.

You sound judgey. If you don’t want your kid to eat it that’s fine, but starting a thread over what sounds like a lovely kids party (that no doubt cost the parents much time and expense to execute) and claim it’s because it’s ’over the top’ is very ungrateful and unkind. Also comes across a little bitter/jealous maybe?

But surely you as the parent could have have your child options... "which cake would yiu like" "would you prefer popcorn or a biscuit" etc?

It's a party. There was a great selection and what sounds like great entertainment!

your kids don’t have to eat everything on offer and it sounds like they went to a huge, if somewhat over the top, effort. We were at bday party today, reminded my six year old going in that they could make some choices about what they wanted to eat but that their tummy may not feel good if they ate everything on offer. They choose (more than I would like!) chocolate but then decided against cake after eating the sandwiches. No bid deal - I won’t always be there to monitor their food so it’s good for them to start making choices and figuring it out themselves. I really don’t like choking hazards available at parties though!

Specialagentblond · 17/05/2026 20:02

It sounds like a whole village fair!

Lordofthebantams · 17/05/2026 20:02

I'm not bitter, I'm incredibly grateful that my children went and did lovely things. Evidently I am a fun sponge.

The food on offer sounds like typical party food. Confused Not sure what the fuss is all about if I'm honest?
