Something not right about this 'news' story

70 year old woman claims to be unable to sell her house.

'I reluctantly dropped the price from £860,000 to £750,000 six months ago because I was desperate'

But if you look at the house on Rightmove, it's advertised at 850k. So she's only dropped it by 10k in all this time. Did the paper make the 'typo' on purpose do we think? Surely reducing your asking price by 10k in 18 months, is not news?

She's just asking too much for it.

I think we’re going to see a lot of this to try and impress why the pensioners simply must have their triple lock.

If it's number 10, they only bought it in 2020 and only paid £585k for it. Why on Earth would they think they're entitled to a whopping £275k profit in only five years??

youalright · 22/04/2026 13:45

That house is stunning. Never read newspaper articles its all lies.

It’s alright. Not sure it’s worth £850k.

SilenceInside · 22/04/2026 13:46

Well, what the writer of the story means is that she can't sell her house for as much as she would like to be able to. Which is not at all the same as being unable to sell it at all.

She bought it for £440,000 in 2003 and wants £860,000 for it now. Despite the fact that nothing similar has sold recently near her for that kind money.

What a lovely house

I wonder what would be a realistic price for it

I would totally buy that. Is 585 realistic?

WallaceinAnderland · 22/04/2026 13:47

This one nearby sold a few months ago for over 100k less. She is asking way too much.

There's nothing wrong with the house, the decor isn't my taste but that can be changed.
Clearly the price is wrong.

wildgreyseas · 22/04/2026 13:46

I don't know the area so don't understand the pricing but the decor is right up my street

WallaceinAnderland · 22/04/2026 13:51

She could sell it in a heartbeat if she priced it right.

I wouldn't call it stunning, especially at that price!

StationJack · 22/04/2026 13:52

It's vastly overpriced.

FettchYeSandbagges · 22/04/2026 13:52

Well it's just advertising the house by another means, isn't it?

StationJack · 22/04/2026 13:54

Yes. It's a free advert/non-story.

But the story says that she'll accept 750k for it now so that's shot her in the foot hasn't it 😂

Our neighbour is trying to sell atm and isn’t having any luck, originally on for 400k and reduced to 380k which she won’t reduce further. She has been there since the 80’s and the place is falling apart, nobody is going to pay that for it. It’s a 3 bed detached and whilst spacious with a large garden it’s also full of damp. Delusional.

I wouldn't say stunning. That estate is very bland.

That one needs a lot of updating though. Kitchen, bathrooms, a lot of the flooring all look really old. It’s a very dated house.

WallaceinAnderland · 22/04/2026 14:11

150k worth of updating though?

OP posts:
WallaceinAnderland · 22/04/2026 14:14

What I can't understand though is why the paper would run such a non story. It's an ordinary house which has been on the market for 18 months and only reduced by 10k. So what is the story? Why is it newsworthy? I don't get it.

Definitely not. Also, decor is personal - I’d want to change loads about the £850k house as it’s not my taste at all. I don’t want to pay a premium for someone else’s (shit) design choices.

It feeds the audience's 'we're so hard done by' narrative.
The article was in a right-wing news outlet.

SabrinaThwaite · 22/04/2026 14:23

I think they’ve put the wrong house in the article - the woman says she’s lived there since 1992 and the house shown was last sold in 2003.

Much more likely to be this one, which is on at £750k and was reduced in January:
