Job market absolutely dire at the moment

I’ve recently started looking for admin work now that my son has started Nursery. I’ve been applying non stop since January and have had no interviews even. I’ve heard from friends who’ve been unemployed for ages and one has even drastically opted to take a job in Saudi Arabia (however she has no family commitments here in the uk). I’m so worried as I really think the job market is at the worse it has ever been.

I agree. Ive been applying for new jobs since jan/feb. And whats annoying too is the 2 roles ive been shortlisted for and in final interview stages each say they want a candidiate who can start quickly...i applied for these jobs 2 months ago +! And dont even have an outcome yet! But they want me to mover quicker than my notice period allows IF i am successful 😅

Yes it’s so depressing how the market is at the moment!

That will be thanks to the changes in all
aspects of trying to run a profitable business.

people are tightening their belts, not taking on more staff, expecting the ones working to do the jobs of more than one person and let’s face it,people are doing it because the markets so bad.

it’s an absolute shit show in this country right now.

MaggieBsBoat · 22/04/2026 13:42

It’s a shitshow all over the EU also sadly. I actually quit a job last week as I couldn’t stand my narky boss anymore but now I’m questioning the wisdom of the move!

Completely agree. If you looking for admin roles and have a hospital near you look at nhs professionals. They usually have lots of admin roles, that will sometimes lead to permanent jobs.

Badbadbunny · 22/04/2026 13:47

Yup, a complete shit show.

The economy never recovered from the 2008 financial crash, then Brexit, then Covid, and if things weren't bad enough, Starmer and Reeves come in with massive tax rises and ruinous employment right changes to kill things even more.

Who'd have thought that killing the economy due to Covid lockdowns and borrowing hundreds of billions to pay for it, forcing huge numbers of businesses to close down permanently wouldn't have had long term disastrous consequences for the economy?

Mrworkyu · 22/04/2026 14:02

Yep, I despair foe all jobseekers and the state of this country

Admin is a particularly difficult area unfortunately as these jobs are very vulnerable to AI replacement. My organisation doesn't intend to ever recruit admin roles again because we can run our comms and meetings through AI instead. There must be huge competition as the roles are disappearing. Are there any other areas of work you are able to consider?

PokHas · 22/04/2026 14:32

As PP said, admin is very likely to be taken over by AI soon. Jobs are available in health/social and childcare where you have to maintain a staffing ratio.
Or you need to retrain.
