Facebook and messaging someone you aren't friends with

Sorry I don't know where else to put this.

I've messaged someone I'm not friends with on Facebook. It's basically my child's father's sister and mum to make them aware of the birth.

I think it will go to their spam (I didn't have Facebook until recently). I messaged them and then deleted the message and re messaged them.

Is there a way to know they've read the message?

It should come up "seen" when they've read it!

That's if you are friends.

OP, as you are not fb friends, I don't think you will be able to see if they have read it.

Does it look like they are active on fb? Recent profile pic etc? If so, I am sure they would have got your message.

If they are not frequent fb users then they possibly haven't.

When they’ve responded?

autienotnaughty · 01/01/2024 23:19

If I get a messenger message from someone I'm not friends with it goes in to message requests. I would only see it if I happen to go into messenger and I noticed a notification in the corner.

Yes that's what I think has happened. Oh well I made an effort

You could send them a friend request and then message once accepted?

AmazingDayz · 01/01/2024 23:46

Not everyone allows random friends request they may have it turned off

tickcross · 01/01/2024 23:51

I don't know if that's a bit too personal? I have no friends on Facebook

It’s risky OP. Many people who are regular users of Facebook don’t know about the message request function for non-friends, because it’s not user friendly at all.

I messaged a guy who wasn’t a Facebook friend whose parcel had come to my house in error - our street names are similar - asking him to pick it up (it was a heavy item) but he obviously didn’t realise that the message was there. I messaged again, to no avail. Two days after that, asked my teen sons to carry it round to him. He was very apologetic when they explained that I’d messaged him twice. He’s a regular Facebooker too, he’s often posting on our neighbourhood page.

You’re better off sending them both a friend request and hoping that at least one of them is curious enough to accept it. Then, any message would come through and be visible.

Good luck!

It still will even if you are not friends. There is also a chance it could go in spam. Basically if it's not seen, that means they haven't seen it

girlfriend44 · 02/01/2024 01:24

If someone who isn't a friend messages me I always see the request.

Josette77 · 02/01/2024 04:12

Facebook changed it so all messages come to the main inbox now.

It will say seen if they accept the message request at the bottom of the message. Otherwise it will just look sent.

lljkk · 02/01/2024 04:34

I receive a lot of msg requests from non 'Friends'; I usually see them quickly.
