Has anyone’s DC got or had a subscription to National Geographic Kids mag?

Would you or they recommend it? Would it be interesting to a bright, fact-liking 6 year old who can read independently and enjoys finding out about nature/science? I’ve seen reviews saying it’s full of ads and there’s not much to read in it and it’s not great value. Would you say that’s true? Thanks

We had it as a birthday gift and it was great. Loads of interesting stuff and nice posters. Didn't particularly notice any ads.

In fact now you've reminded me I might resubscribe!

Grossbuttrue · 11/06/2021 16:58

DS has had a subscription for the last three or four years. He loves it and it seems like good value for money to me.

Souther · 11/06/2021 16:59

I've got one for my kid. Shes 7.

She likes the little extras she gets, and the small booklet that comes with it. But she doesnt find the main magazine of too much interest.

We got the subscription for her 7th birthday, so will see how we get on over the coming months.

Thanks all. The reviews online looked a few years old. I think I’m going to go for it.

My 10yo has had it for a couple of years but is finding it repetitive now.
I'm tending to sneak them to my 8yo if they've gone unopened for a few days.

I'm struggling for an appropriate replacement. He has an autistic appetite for detail but needs clear, blocky layouts for his dyspraxia.

Dilbertian · 11/06/2021 17:16

It used to be essentially a marketing vehicle for films, TV shows and toys. With a few interesting articles. It has vastly improved and is now a genuinely interesting nature and geography magazine for children.

Dilbertian · 11/06/2021 17:19

@BogRollBOGOF

Try How It Works. My youngest is only just starting to drift away from it at 14.

Tidypidy · 11/06/2021 17:34

The Week Junior is very good. Lots of current affairs obvs! but also interesting articles and puzzles.

EdHelpPls · 11/06/2021 17:46

A lot of libraries have free digital magazines. In NI nat geo kids is available ( and a few others)
Might be worth checking there first?

JoyOrbison · 11/06/2021 17:52

@BogRollBOGOF

Have you looked at Oyla? Not sure if layout would be suitable though?

Snowallspring · 11/06/2021 17:54

My 7 year old loves it and has been getting it for over a year.

My kids also like Okido and First News (and Private Eye, but that's miiiine).

Nachteule · 11/06/2021 18:04

It sounds just the thing . I’ll also take a look at Okido which I’ve not heard of and The Week. Thanks for your help everyone.

@BogRollBOGOF Not sure if the layout will be suitable but the How It Works magazine is brilliant.

MargaretFraggle · 11/06/2021 20:27

We get it. I think it's pretty good for £35 a year.

MyDcAreMarvel · 11/06/2021 20:31

@Nachteule if you get Readly it has national geographic kids and the week junior included

MyDcAreMarvel · 11/06/2021 20:33

@Nachteule also the week science and nature and animal planet .

MrsRussell · 11/06/2021 20:35

Whizz Pop Bang is also a good science magazine. Although the jokes are awful.

FunTimes2020 · 11/06/2021 20:39

The sell NG Kids magazine in our larger Tesco. You could buy it as a one off and see what you and DC think. My now teen DD used to enjoy it but we didn't have a subscription, I just bought it periodically.

Verbena87 · 11/06/2021 20:40

It’s great and since getting a subscription I’ve learnt that beaver’s tails smell like biscuits, which is one of my favourite facts I’ve ever learnt (am educated to postgrad level 🤣).

It’s full of interesting snippets and gorgeous photos.

ValerieMorghulis · 11/06/2021 21:16

The pull-out posters are lovely in NG Kids; I think it is true to NG in its really good photography. I would say it’s good for ages up to about 9 years old. Aquila is good at that age also

MargaretFraggle · 11/06/2021 21:20

The posters are lovely, my DD has a wall of animals staring at her Smile

SleepyPartyTime · 11/06/2021 21:21

We have bought it occasionally. It's probably OK for an average 6 year old a bright one might find it a little dull. Have you tried this week junior? It's news based but really interesting. Mine both love it.

Nachteule · 11/06/2021 22:54

Thanks. This is so helpful. I was thinking of This Week junior but didn’t want to burden DS with anything too upsetting. He is aware of dying and death, illness and war etc and very troubled by them and as he’s only 6 I don’t want him fretting or feeling as if he has to worry about things while he’s still so little. He also likes funny and cheesy jokes and how things work as well as nature so I was looking at a mag I’d not heard of before called Chickadee which looks a possibility. It’s hard to choose.

Like a PP mentioned my 10 and 8 year olds have a subscription to both The Week Junior (weekly) and their Science & Nature magazine (monthly), and also How It Works which is aimed at a slightly older audience. All are read and enjoyed (often on the toilet!). Tried Whizz Pop Bang but it wasn't a hit for some reason.

Their hands down favourite though is the Phoenix , which gets pounced on when it arrives and saved and reread until they fall apart.
