Does your 10 year old still play with toys?

Ds is coming up to 10 and has pretty much stopped playing with toys altogether. The only exception is playmobil but that’s getting less and less frequent.
He’s never liked Lego so that’s a no go.
He likes sports and electronics and that’s about it.

I guess 10 is about the norm to stop playing with toys? He takes his birthday / pocket money to the shop now and there’s absolutely nothing he wants and it seems to make him a bit sad. I feel sure I still had some toys I played with aged 10 but maybe I didn’t much after that age as I suppose it’s year 6 and then secondary school.

My dd likes slime does that count?

My dd will be 10 in September. She plays with her Schleich horses. Has a stable too.

Yep, geo mags, Lego, Playmobile. He hadn’t touched the Playmobile for months, but had it out forages last weekend, but Lego has been a constant presence since he was about 4. He’s now 10.

Ds plays with his playmobil castle and football pitch.
Until recently he played with his minecraft figures, Star Wars figures and army guys too but Id say gradually less and less over the last six months and now not at all.

My ds is nearly 11 and doesn't really play with toys much apart from his star wars mini figures. He will play board games with me...we played guess who today! He doesn't play with Lego anymore really. It's his birthday soon and I have no idea what to get him?! I've asked him and there is nothing he really wants.

Ds has never liked Lego which is a shame as it seems a toy that’s ‘acceptable’ to have into adulthood! He has quite a lot of small Lego figures which he used to play with and build bases for with magnatiles but I can’t remember the last time they were out the box.

He does like board games.

I have a 9 yr old dd and a 10yr old dd. They have stopped playing with toys... they have a room full of them, that are gathering dust. If I say that they are not allowed any electronics, they wail as they have absolutely nothing to do. Then I give them extra hw.
Every now and then they play a board game with each other (monopoly or game of life), do a bit of Lego or shoot each other with nerf guns. That's it. I'm waiting until they start secondary school and then clearing it all to the charity shop...

DS 10 in April and loves playing with his toy tanks and Lego and will often join in playing with his little brother (4). He definitely doesn't play as much as he used to, prefers to read.

My 10 year old plays with Lego every day, draws a lot, plays on the Switch and watches stuff on Youtube. Doesn't really play with other toys much although randomly he and his brother (13) will suddenly decide to build a train track around the whole upstairs of the house!

We have the same experience with birthday money though - other than more games for the Switch (which I limit because they are v expensive for what they are).

DD is 10 and still loves her Schleich horses (and stable, arena, house, etc, etc).

DS will be 12 in April and plays with his toy soldiers and loves a big Lego build. He also likes things like science and magic kits, card games, calligraphy, and riddles.

Hope that helps!

Oh and Warhammer, how could I forget bloody Warhammer!!

missyB1 · 31/01/2019 22:07

Ds is 10 and loves his toy planes and airport.

Cheekysquirrel · 31/01/2019 22:09

Ds mainly loves his iPad.
When the weather is better he goes outside a lot to play football or on he trampoline.

It seems a lot of children around 9/10 are starting to play less with toys.
Ds doesn’t like reading much either. We got him tickets for Christmas and I guess it’s likely we might get him tickets to a match of some kind for his birthday and a football kit probably. Maybe some new football boots.
It’s hard because dd (3) absolutely loves toys, really in a way ds never did. So at Christmas she was absolutely beside herself with excitement over everything whereas ds had more practical things - a camera, a watch, the tickets etc. Nice things and he was pleased but it just doesn’t match dd’s excitement. Even at 3 he was nowhere near as thrilled by toys as dd is.
