Our pets are part of the family, but let’s be honest, keeping your house clean with cats and dogs at home can feel like a never-ending task. Moulting pet hair gets everywhere, stubbornly clinging to every crevice of your carpets, cushions and car upholstery, and it only gets worse in summer.

While you may need one of the best carpet cleaners to tackle more significant accidents and stains, the most effective way to handle day-to-day cleaning is with a vacuum designed specifically for pet owners. Unlike traditional vacuums that can clog or struggle to lift pet hair, these high-suction appliances offer impressive cleaning performance, keeping your home clean, hygienic, and hair-free.

How we tested the best vacuums for pet hair

two dogs on a yellow sofa next to the shark stratos xl vacuum cleaner

To bring you our pick of the best vacuum cleaners for pet hair, we tapped into the tried-and-tested verdicts of trusted Mumsnet users, gathering their recommendations on the high-performing models and brands that can handle even a houseful of long-haired cats or dogs with heavy shedding.

We also did wider research, carefully scrutinising the models that cleaning experts rate and analysing authentic consumer reviews to find vacuums that performed well in different price brackets.

Finally, we then conducted our own thorough testing on the majority of vacuums included in this guide to ensure they performed well in real homes. Mumsnet HQ editors Poppy O'Neill and Jenny Wonnacott plus tester Tamsin assessed the vacuums over several weeks, using them daily on a range of surfaces from carpets and rugs to hard floors and upholstery. During testing, we evaluated suction performance on pet hair and embedded dirt, ease of use and manoeuvrability, bin capacity, battery life on cordless models, and overall value for money.

Whether you're after a cordless vacuum, an upright vacuum or a cylinder vacuum, here are the top models for pet hair.

I have the Shark Stratos upright corded XXL version, and it is the only thing that will pick up my very long-haired cat's fur! I tried cordless, but they don't have the power necessary.

I would be wary of a cordless one for [pet hair] if I am honest. We have this one and it is excellent. We have a beagle x pug that sheds like a beast, but this keeps up with him. The amount we got up when we first used this hoover was shocking, considering the previous hoover was also a pet variety.

While the large size of this corded appliance may not be for everyone, the Shark Stratos XL offers impressive suction, efficiently lifting pet hair and dander from all floor surfaces, including hard flooring, floor mats, and thick-pile carpets.

In a house with four pets, I found that this vacuum could breeze through even the most challenging pet hair problems, with an anti-hair wrap pet power brush tool that didn’t clog, even after significant use. And thanks to the headlight illuminating my path, it was easy to ensure nothing was missed.

While it did take me some time to master all the release buttons and settings, I loved the range of versatile attachments on this vacuum, which were suitable for use throughout my entire home. I also really rated the adjustable anti-odour cartridge, which can help to combat smells when dealing with dirtier jobs or accidents.

Our verdict

Despite its budget-friendly price tag, the Vax Air Stretch Pet Max is a high-performance upright vacuum that makes an excellent addition to homes with pets.

Thanks to the impressive 17-metre cable, you should be able to easily blitz an entire floor using a single plug socket - depending on the size of your house, of course! Unlike some corded upright cleaners, its slim, lightweight, and portable design also makes it relatively easy to lift up and down stairs.

Due to their location clipped on the sides, some reviewers felt the tools weren’t very accessible. However, the built-in turbo tool comes highly rated, and it helps lift stubborn pet hair from hard floors, carpets and floor mats. Then, switch to the upholstery tool to refresh your pet's favourite spot on the sofa, lifting away even larger clumps from fur-coated cushions.

We also love the intelligent HEPA filter, which traps small particles and pet dander that could otherwise leave unwelcome allergens behind. Not bad for under £100 - making this our best budget vacuum cleaner for pet owners.

Reviewed by Mumsnet editor Poppy O’Neill: Read our full Dyson V15 Detect review

Whilst there’s no denying the price tag is substantial, pet owners will love the Dyson V15 Detect. This impressive, high-tech vacuum cleaner not only collects visible pet hair, dirt and debris, but its ingenious laser functionality can even gather particles smaller than the naked eye. Doubting the science? This intelligent vacuum provides proof with detailed (and somewhat shocking) cleaning statistics.

While traditional vacuums can sometimes struggle with suction, the V15 is Dyson’s most powerful vacuum yet, featuring three different power levels that automatically adjust according to the floor surface you're cleaning.

We love that there are eight different attachment tools to choose from, including the hair screw tool, which can easily remove pet hair. You can also quickly convert this cordless vacuum into a handheld model, ideal for a quick clean of stairs or tackling those high-ceiling nooks and crannies. No wonder it took the award for our best vacuum cleaner overall - however, it was just pipped to the post for pet hair performance by the corded Shark.

  • Long hair wraps around the Turbine Pet brush bar, so you’ll be cutting it off now and then

  • Bulky to store

I agree with previous comments re Vax [LiftOut]. I’ve had mine about 14 months now and it’s amazing. Knocks the socks off all my past Dysons. It gets under beds and sofas, I lift the main bit off to hoover my laminate flooring (it makes it really light so doesn’t mark or scratch) it’s really easy get the wand thing off and it’s a button at hand height to switch between wood and carpet. It’s almost like it’s been designed by someone who has actually used a hoover!! Oh, and the suction is incredible too. Best boring appliance I’ve bought in years.

Tested by Mumsnet editor Poppy O'Neill: Read our full Vax LiftOut Reach Pet Design review

If you want an upright that can cope with a properly hairy household (pets, teens, the lot), the Vax LiftOut Reach Pet-Design is a very strong shout. It’s powerful on carpets and rugs, and the Turbine Pet tool is the bit that really earns its keep on stairs and those clingy hair hotspots. Day to day it’s also pleasingly no-faff: easy to steer, a long cord, a big bin, and a floorhead light that shows up dust you’d otherwise miss.

The downsides are the usual upright compromises. It’s heavy to carry upstairs, and long hair will wrap around the brush bar, so you’ll need to do the occasional snip-and-clear. Still, for the money (especially when discounted), it’s a hardworking, sensible pick for pet hair — and a solid winner for best upright vacuum cleaner for pet hair.

Reviewed by Mumsnet editor Jenny Wonnacott: Read our full Miele Guard M1 Cylinder Vacuum review

If, like me, you live in a home where pet hair seems to respawn as fast as you hoover it up, the Miele Guard M1 is a great choice. I’d previously crowned the now-discontinued Miele C3 Cat & Dog “the best vacuum I’ve ever used”, and I’m not alone - Mumsnetters have long praised the C3 for its unbeatable pet-hair performance. So I was sceptical anything could match it. Thankfully, the M1 impressed me as a worthy successor.

Its suction power on carpets is exceptional - it pulled up hair from our two cats with ease, even leaving those satisfying clean lines in the pile. The Turbobrush is brilliant for tackling fur on all but the most embedded patches, and it still performed well on my cats' favourite blanket. While it does need regular detangling (I snip away hair before every use), I found the trade-off totally worth it for just how thoroughly it cleans.

The M1 feels like using the same vacuum as the beloved C3 - only better. The dustbag is now sealed tighter for less mess when emptying, and it still features that relentless suction I loved from the original. Yes, it’s pricey and comes with fewer power modes, but in terms of pet hair performance? It totally sucks in the best possible way, and I’d happily call it my new number one cylinder vacuum for pet households.

We have a green Henry Pet that cost us £130 from Argos recently. It’s very good. Long hose which means I can almost do the whole house from one plug. Very powerful, better than the Sharks and other ones we’ve had before. Comes with a turbo pet hair thing. I like the fact it has bags as I have asthma and can’t stand the dust clouds from emptying bagless ones.

Almost all of us will be familiar with the friendly face of a Henry vacuum cleaner, a brand loved by cleaners and well-known for its industrial and commercial products. The Henry Pet features all the familiar elements of the classic Henry HVR160 we know and love, but is specifically tailored for homes with pets.

With a selection of powerful airbrushes, including a motorised hair brush to tackle long and short hair, the Henry Pet can remove stubborn dust, dirt and pet dander from carpets and hard floors. The specialist MicroFresh filtration system is scientifically proven to reduce pet-related allergens around your home, trapping unpleasant odours as you clean..

While he’s bulkier and more cumbersome than some, I loved the super long reach of Henry’s hose and cable, including the automatic rewind feature that’s almost fun to use when it's time to pack away.

With an impressive nine-litre capacity that’s up to five times larger than some cordless vacuums, you won’t need to stop halfway round your house to empty the contents. And while it does require a bag, the self-sealing design makes emptying Henry quick and mess-free.

Thanks to its portable and lightweight design, this convenient Shark handheld is a game-changer for small clean-up tasks.

With three useful accessories, it can tackle a myriad of cleaning tasks, including eradicating pet hair from your furniture, pet bedding or car upholstery. While the crevice tool can get right between your sofa cushions, the Motorised Pet Tool will be your new best friend, removing even firmly embedded pet hair from your home. In fact, when we tested it out, it took mere minutes to get the sofa looking fresh again.

We loved the freedom of a cordless design; however, with a short run time of just 10 minutes, speed and focus are key. The dust cup is also relatively small, but with a one-touch release, emptying is quick and hygienic.

How do pet vacuum cleaners differ from other vacuums?

Pet vacuums often have several specialised features, helping them perform better than traditional vacuums when cleaning up after pets. These may include:

  • Specialised motorised brushes and tools that activate the surfaces of your flooring, lifting away pet hair from carpets and upholstery, even when embedded deep into the fibres.

  • Anti-tangle brush rolls that won’t get tangled or clogged, ensuring suction power remains high even after tackling areas with significant pet hair.

  • Powerful suction, often including turbo settings to manage more significant pet messes and accidents.

  • Odour control, including filters or antimicrobial features to leave your home smelling clean and fresh.

What should I look for in a vacuum cleaner for pet hair?

Here are some things to consider when purchasing a vacuum cleaner for pet hair:

  • Portability: How lightweight and portable is the vacuum? How easy is it to carry up and down the stairs and manoeuvre around tight corners? If it’s a heavier machine, are these benefits outweighed (quite literally) by other advantages, such as suction power and cleaning modes?

  • Suction power: How powerful is the vacuum? Does it have a turbo mode for more significant cleaning tasks?

  • Anti-tangle technology: For stress-free cleaning and minimal maintenance, vacuums with anti-tangle technology and rotating brush heads can prevent the build-up and clogging of your brushes. This is particularly suited to long-haired pets and even the collection of human hair.

  • Tools included: What specialist tools are included? Crevice tools can be handy for cleaning between sofa cushions, whereas motorised pet tools can help lift hairs and restore upholstery and carpets during moulting season.

  • Bin capacity: If you have multiple pets at home, consider the bin capacity of your vacuum, as this will determine how often you need to empty it. Whilst bagged vacuums come with the additional cost of branded bags, they usually have a higher capacity and can be less messy to empty than bagless designs.

  • Floor types: Some vacuums have floor heads that automatically adjust to their environment, seamlessly switching from hard floors to thick carpets with ease. Others are better suited to hard and wooden flooring. Before you buy, consider how effective the vacuum will be on your floor types and whether you will be required to switch or swap between heads or accessories.

  • Versatility: Some vacuums offer the flexibility to transform into a handheld device, which can be particularly practical if you have a large home and need to switch between big expanses of carpet and high ceilings and skirting boards. Look out for vacuums with a range of attachments and cleaning options if you want to confidently cover all bases.

Are cordless vacuums effective for pet hair?

Cordless vacuums are both lightweight and portable, making them suitable for small clean-up tasks and a quick whizz around your home. Depending on the brand, cordless suction can be high, but it’s worth considering whether run time and power will be sufficient. Often, the highest power levels are required to lift embedded pet hair, and your battery life will suffer as a result.

Many Mumsnet users find that for deep cleaning, especially on thick pile carpets and rugs, a corded appliance may be more efficient.

How often should I vacuum to manage pet hair?

The frequency of vacuuming to combat pet hair will depend on several factors, including the size of your home, the number of pets, and the breed and shedding level.

As a rough guide:

  • One pet, light shedder - two to three times per week

  • One or more moderate-heavy shedder - every other day

  • Multiple pets or heavy shedders - daily

  • Pet beds - weekly

  • Upholstery - one to two times per week

We also looked out for any negative reviews, where Mumsnetters highlighted products that they felt were poor quality, difficult to manoeuvre, or simply struggled to tackle long, stubborn or embedded pet hair.

Expert opinions

Next up, we considered reviews and feedback from trusted industry experts. We want to be confident that the pet hair vacuums we recommend are fit for purpose, so we looked out for award-winning products or those that were well regarded in the marketplace, including those recommended by cleaning experts and consumer champions.
