Tell me about a holiday in Yorkshire

Would love to go to Yorkshire this year, we have a week at beginning of April. Myself, DP, DD (16) and two small dogs.

We like the sea, but also love scenery and moorland walks. Not fussed about the weather, a rainy day beachcombing is a perfect day for us.

We have decided on a cottage, either a village or country, not town centre.

Just really not sure where is nice for a bit of a mix. Whitby is a place we'd like to visit but beyond that I'm clueless

I absolutely love Whitby. Some of the villages nearby are really lovely, especially on the moors.

From Whitby, you've got robins hood bay, staithes, north Yorkshire Moors and railway. Easy travel up to Sandsend, Scarborough, Malton, Pickering, Helmsley, Stokesely and Thirsk are all worth a visit. Miles of walking through coast and countryside. Malton has a food market once a month, there is Castle Howard which is worth a visit too.

There is plenty too do and see!

North Yorkshire Moors are beautiful. We often rent a cottage in a little village (eg last time we went to Cropton). It's an easy drive to the coast, there's the steam trains and the whole area is just gorgeous.

Robin Hood's Bay is a gem. You can get a bus to Whitby from there.

Whitby is heaving in the school holidays, much nicer outside these times.

Quick trip round the bacon factory if you get bored.

If you're heading near Whitby look out for falling foss, lovely walk and outdoor tea room should be open again by then (they close for winter).

We went to Yorkshire this summer such a memorable holiday.
Stayed predominantly in Whitby which was lovely rented a fab 2 bed cottage that was central, then travelled from there to Robin hoods bay, York, Staithes and on the way back Scarborough. Just brilliant. Myself and my 2 DD's in my convertible. Such lovely memories.

Don't try to do too much or travel too far, it's a large county with lots going on.

For example, Whitby and Wensleydale are over 2 hours apart.

You could holiday here for a year and barely scratch the surface, let alone a week.

If you fancy something a bit different to a cottage www.coastandcamplight.co.uk/ is amazing and child friendly. Close to Whitby but off the beaten track with incredible scenery.

I agree with staying somewhere around Malton or Helmsley etc. we did this last summer - lots of options for things to do, days out etc.

Also agree Stokesly and Thirsk a bit far out if staying Whitby area. Sandsend and Robin Hoods bay are lovely as is Staithes for a day trip

The harbour village of Staithes is a hidden gem just north of Whitby.

Also The Bay at Filey is lovely, a bit more mini centre parks.
