This Samsung SpaceMax model is a high-spec fridge freezer with an affordable price tag. Mumsnetters love the Samsung brand; they feel their domestic appliances are reliable, spacious, and stylish, and this model is an excellent example. We’re impressed with the sleek design and matte silver colourway. It would look fantastic in any kitchen style, and the reversible door and recessed handles mean it will fit into most layouts.
SpaceMax technology makes the insulating walls thinner, maximising the usable space. It is also a no frost machine, so there’s no need to manually defrost it, and the all round cooling technology means there will be no cold or warm spots within the fridge cabinet. Our best buy fridge freezer for value is this 50/50 split Beko. It’s a fantastic no-frills model that will keep your food fresh, whether in the kitchen or an unheated outbuilding. It is also frost-free, an impressive convenience for this price. What's more, if you have a compact kitchen, this slimline appliance will save space without compromising on capacity.
Despite the warranty only being one year, reviewers commented positively on the long-term reliability and capacity of this model. The shelves and drawers feel sturdy, and the layout is thoughtfully designed. We love the large crisper drawers and the bright LED lighting, which is super helpful for midnight snacks.
The downside is that it doesn't have a water or ice dispenser and smart features like some models, but that's to be expected at this price point.

When we tested this smart LG model, we were impressed with its sophisticated features and sleek modern looks. It delivers crisp, cold water that is 100% free of bacteria thanks to UVNano™ technology. We also love the Door-in-Door™ storage which makes grabbing the milk for a cuppa a cinch.
In addition, the smart capability allows you to check the temperature of your fridge from your phone and watch cooking videos on the digital screen. This is a sizeable appliance, but its good looks mean it will make a fantastic centrepiece and the fingerprint-proof and wipe clean surface is super useful if you have a young family. The price is top-end, but you do get a 10-year guarantee on the motor, so we think it is well worth the investment.

This Fridgemaster model has all the stylish looks and capacity of a standard American-style fridge freezer but comes at a significantly lower price compared to other options. The 'Total No Frost' means you don’t have the faff and mess of defrosting the freezer, plus your food will remain fresh and the interior odour-free thanks to the innovative multi air flow.
Both the fridge and freezer have sturdy shelves and plenty of space in the doors, and it also has a large drawer at the bottom of each so small hands can easily grab an ice cream or a piece of fruit. The sleek design of this fantastic appliance will suit a modern kitchen and consumers were delighted with the fingerprint-proof recessed handles too. Our only disappointment is that it's missing a water and ice dispenser.

The extra large crisper drawer reduces door storage
Price: £649 | Dimensions: 201.5 x 59.7 x 67.5cm | Fridge capacity: 227 litres | Freezer capacity: 132 litres | Energy rating: D | Frost free: Yes | Reversible door: | Noise level: 36 dB | Warranty: Two years
Liebherr fridge freezers have impressive build quality and longevity - they share the same factory as trusted appliance brand Miele - and this robust model in classic white is an excellent example of their reliability. This high-spec fridge freezer has an efficient and quiet auto-defrost feature and twin cooling, so the wet air in the fridge and colder dry air in the freezer don’t mix. Reviewers also enjoyed the flexibility of the layout and whisper-quiet operation.
Our favourite feature is the EasyFresh drawers, which automatically adjust the humidity to suit the products inside. This keeps salad, soft fruit and root veg at the optimum temperature. For maximum freshness, you may also wish to preserve your food using a vacuum sealer before storing it in the fridge or freezer compartments.
We also love the LCD touchscreen and LED interior light. Together, they make this clever fridge freezer easy to use, even in dim light.

If you’re struggling for space in your kitchen but need regular access to fresh and frozen food, the Cookology UCFF87 is the perfect solution. This fridge freezer is compact yet spacious, with a separate crisper box for fruit and veg and the option to reverse the doors if needed.
We think the Cookology will look great in any kitchen, utility room, or home office, and it can easily be tucked away out of sight. We also love that there's a simple-to-operate temperature control, so you can adjust it easily depending on what you're storing. The decibel rating is 42dB, suggesting this model is loud for its size – however, reviewers were impressed by its quietness and feel it would work well in an open-plan kitchen.
For more compact appliances for a small kitchen, don’t miss our guide to the best slimline dishwasher - these small but mighty machines certainly don't compromise on cleaning power.

If you dream of a streamlined, minimalist kitchen, the Bosch Series 6 should be your fridge freezer of choice. It has a reversible door and can be integrated into your kitchen units with a robust fixed hinge. The brightly lit interior of this versatile appliance is fully adjustable to suit your family’s needs thanks to movable, shatterproof glass shelves, compartments and drawers.
The BigBox freezer drawer is useful as you can stack boxes of batch cooked food or large, unusually shaped items. We're delighted it has an automatic super freeze function too; if the temperature rises, it will deliver a boost of cold. In addition, reviewers were thrilled with the quiet operation and large fridge and freezer capacity. Our only gripe is that you have to manually defrost it, which is a disappointment given the price.

Hisense RB390N4WB1 60/40 Total No Frost Fridge Freezer

The easy access freezer shelf has mixed reviews
Price: £419 | Dimensions: D59 x W59.5 x H186cm | Fridge capacity: 207 litres | Freezer capacity: 97 litres | Energy rating: F | Frost free: Yes | Reversible door: Yes | Noise level: 39 dB | Warranty: Two years
We think the Hisense RB390N4WB1 will look stunning in a dark-toned kitchen. It has a stylish matte black satin finish that reviewers report as fingerprint-proof. It also has a family-friendly 300-litre capacity, and the intuitive layout maximises the space available. Cold water on tap is a great way to encourage your family to hydrate, so the non-plumbed, easy-to-fill water dispenser is super useful.
Total No Frost technology means the mess and faff of defrosting can be avoided entirely. We also love the LED lights in the interior, which are super bright without glare, so you’ll be able to find the treats when you’re rummaging for a midnight snack. A few reviewers did note that they would have preferred another drawer in the freezer instead of the easy access shelf, but this was only a small complaint and overall it received fantastic praise.

If you’re all about aesthetics and everything from your tea towels to your placemats has to be stylish, the Smeg FAB30L is a beautiful statement piece that will add a wow factor to your kitchen. It comes in lots of bold colours, but we think this classic cream and glossy chrome interior is the most versatile. Take note that the fridge section is much bigger than the freezer, so if you’re a large family, you may also need to invest in a chest freezer. That said, the ice box still has 72 litres of space.
If you buy lots of meat and fish, the Smeg is an excellent option as the 0°C section will keep it at the same optimum temperature as a supermarket fridge. It also has a sturdy wire rack too, which prevents chunky pop bottles filling up the door space. The fruit and veg box is also fab; it’s generously sized, and the strong seals will protect your goods from the outside air that may cause them to go off quicker.
Our biggest grumble is the cost – it's eye-wateringly pricey and still has to be manually defrosted. However, Mumsnetters say it's worth the expense and effort as Smeg fridge freezers are built to last.

Price: £1,900 | Dimensions: H203, x W59.5 x D67.5cm | Fridge capacity: 227 litres | Freezer capacity: 107 litres | Energy rating: A | Frost free: Yes | Reversible door: Yes | Noise level: 35 dB | Warranty: Two years
If caring for the environment is essential to you, investing in the LG GBB92MCBAP will be worth it. Since the changes to the energy rating system in 2021, it has been tough for an appliance to achieve an 'A' rating, and the LG does just that! This premium fridge freezer has elegant styling and innovative features, and the compressor comes with a superb 20-year guarantee. In addition, it has a chrome bottle rack to free up shelf space, increasing capacity, and a clever folding shelf to stack tubs or store a large joint of meat.
Food, especially fruit and veg, stay fresher for longer in this fridge so there’s less chance of it ending up wasted in the kitchen bin. This is because the motor circulates air, so there are no warm spots, and the door storage is 30% colder than on a standard fridge freezer. NatureFRESH and FRESHconverter tech also automatically create the optimum humidity and temperature for the foods it detects, whether an apple or a piece of fish. The downside? It's the most expensive model on our shortlist.
Which type of fridge freezer is best?
The fridge freezer size and style you need depends on the space you have available in your kitchen or utility room and the size of your family.
American fridge freezers
If you have a large family and need plenty of storage space, an American-style fridge freezer is a good choice. Most standard fridge freezers will have a width of either 55 or 60cm, whereas an American fridge freezer will be between 70 and 90cm, so you do need to measure up and make sure you have enough space.
Freestanding fridge freezer
These can either be placed at the end of a run of units or sit alone as a feature. Retro styles and American fridge freezers are a great option if this is your plan.
Integrated fridge freezer
Designed to sit inside a kitchen unit, they will have a narrower width than a freestanding model. A kitchen unit door will then be attached to the front of the fridge freezer with either a fixed or sliding hinge.
Under counter fridge freezers
There aren’t many under counter fridge freezers available to buy. However, if you have a small kitchen, they are a great alternative to a fridge with an ice box. They're also great for parties if you need extra storage too.
What should I look for when choosing the best fridge freezer?
While searching for your new fridge freezer, focus on the following features.
Energy rating: The new energy rating system was launched in March 2021. Appliances are now rated between A and G, with A being the most efficient. It’s also worth checking the annual energy consumption. This is measured in kWh, and the higher the number, the more expensive it will be to run. You can work out how much it will cost to run using the Energy Price Guarantee which is currently £0.27 per kWh.
Frost-free technology: An innovation that means that ice and frost won’t build up in the fridge and freezer. You will save the time and energy required for manual defrosting and won’t lose capacity when your freezer ices up.
Noise levels: If your fridge freezer is going to sit in an open-plan kitchen, choosing a quiet model is a good idea. The number of decibels will be a good indication; look for a number under 40. The Quiet Mark award is also a guarantee of noiseless operation; appliances will display a purple 'Q'.
Capacity: Bigger families will need a fridge freezer with a larger capacity. This is measured in litres. The individual capacity of the fridge and freezer will depend on the split.
Split: A fridge-freezer split describes the size difference between the fridge and freezer section as a percentage. Many families need more fridge space than freezer, so a 70/30 or 60/40 would work well. However, the freezer will always be the smallest section, and if freezer space is important, a 50/50 split would be best.
Water and ice dispensers: Easily accessible cool water is a great way to encourage your family to stay hydrated. A water dispenser will be on the front of the fridge freezer. Bear in mind it may take up interior door space and may require plumbing or a regular water filter change.
Twin cooling: The fridge and freezer both have separate airflow. This stops wet and cold air from mixing, maintaining the optimum temperature of the stored food and keeping your appliance energy efficient.
Fast freeze and/or rapid cool: A feature that, either automatically or manually, creates a boost of cold. It’s useful after cleaning, defrosting and introducing ambient temperature food.
Humidity controls: Fresh fruit and veg must be kept at the optimum humidity to stay fresh for a long time. For example, root veg needs high humidity, whereas salad veg needs low. Some fridge freezers have drawers that allow you to adjust the humidity depending on the product you’re storing.
How long should a new fridge freezer last?
A fridge freezer should last between 10-20 years if correctly maintained. Most will have a manufacturer's parts and labour warranty of one to three years. Some models will guarantee individual components like the compressor or inverter motor for over ten years.
When choosing your new fridge freezer make sure the drawers and shelves are made from sturdy plastic, glass or safety glass as they can be expensive to replace.
As your fridge freezer ages, here are some signs that it will soon need replacing:
Increased frost build-up on the inside
Condensation on the outside
It starts getting noisy
Your food isn’t as fresh for long
Cracks appear in the casing
