Worldwide XX Day proposed, wear red - 10th October

Just seen on X. #TERFDayofVisibility proposed for 10th October because it's X X in Roman numerals. Suggested that women in support all over the world should wear red. Symbolic but also not as political as suffragette colours for those who need to be careful at work. I think I'll give this a go. https://x.com/sappholives83/status/1837232379179544598?t=wUUgCHATTW_qZ2O6c4z8NQ&s=19

You would need a TERF sign as well, so people don't think you're celebrating Republic Of China's Double Ten day.

Tooting33 · 22/09/2024 07:26

I thought you were joking, but double 10 day is real! What a crazy coincidence.

I could do both at once, for efficiency. I have a bright red mandarin-collared shirt.

cardigankitty · 22/09/2024 07:49

I really like the idea of this. I don’t wear red much, only have a dress which is sadly too small, but I could get a scarf or something. Hope lots of women join in!

Alucard55 · 22/09/2024 07:57

Red lipstick and adult human female badge for me.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/09/2024 08:36

I have a red t-shirt I bought to celebrate making to the top of a mountain, so that would be particularly good. Are we still banned from using another word for the top of a mountain?

We're not allowed to say peak or summit? Why not?

What about women with Turners Syndrome? They have one full X and either a missing or partial second X chromosome? They are definitely considered women.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/09/2024 11:09

I know. As far as I can see from X, someone floated the idea of having a special day and this was picked as one with a simple and obvious significance.

There was a point when it was forbidden to say that someone had peaked or to make reference to things peaking people. Goodness knows why.

XX signifies female. All women. Let's not overthink.
A bit of a bugger about Chinese double ten, though!

I'm game, OP. Lots of red clothes so I don't even need to go shopping, which is a shame good.

Not to be pedantic, but some women aren't XX, as already stated (Turner Syndrome).
There is also a condition called Klinefelter syndrome - the presence of the Y gives male characteristics however they also have XX which results in feminine aspects. These people are often labelled intersex.
I get the idea of standing up for biological females, just not sure XX is the way to go.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/09/2024 11:48

Well, it's not my idea, I'm just reporting that whoever's trying to get this off the ground via X/Twitter has settled on this. That would be the place to raise an objection but it's probably too late. The hashtag doesn't include the word woman or female if that helps.

Sorry if you think I'm being obtuse - I just hate the thought of women being excluded while trying to empower them (if that makes sense). 😔

I am well aware of DSDs. The point is that XX as a signifier universally is read as "female".
It's already been used by the Olympic boxers.

ETA: It includes all biological women.

DSDs?

Ignore.
Of course you mean Developmental Sexual Disorders and not Darling Step Daughters.....🫣

DSDs (Disorders / Differences of Sexual Development) are the preferred term, as “intersex” is outdated & misleadingly suggests people are a mix of sexes.

Klinefelters is an exclusively male DSD, & the only characteristic that makes a living being female is development along the pathway to producing large gametes. Female birds aren’t XX but they still developed towards producing eggs.

Errors of transcription & recombination happen, though very rarely: most self-diagnosed “intersex” claimants are nothing of the sort, as you can see the minute you ask which DSD they have.

Similarly, some people are born with a partially or wholly missing lower limb, but humans are still a bipedal mammal & included in the Chinese radical for “human” which is a stick figure with 2 legs.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 22/09/2024 12:12

Double ten day came to my mind too.

Looking at my wardrobe I don't have a single item of clothing in red, but I'll try and find something. Not that it will probably make any difference as that day we're going to someone's 90th birthday party and most of the people going will be over 80, but I'll know so will do it.

StickItInTheFamilyAlbum · 22/09/2024 12:26

Bunbury wonders if it's not so much pedantry as me-railing on display.

I don't know what take-up there was in 2023.

Intersex people often describe themselves are feeling a mixture of sexes though.
Edit - I realise that technically it's a disorder and that is a more appropriate name. Klinefelters patients obviously do present as males. It was just more the worry of Turners women feeling omitted.

spannasaurus · 22/09/2024 13:07

@Neinneinnein men with Klinefelters do not present as male they ARE male

They aren't typical males, hence my use of the word present.
They have (sometimes abnormally small) male sexual organs though (many) won't go through a typical male puberty.
Of course they are not female, due to the presence of the Y chromosome alongside the two XX.

Yes, I have a bright red dress I could wear.
Gosh - me in a dress - my college friends won't recognise me!
