Breville Stainless Steel Slow Cooker with Mumsnet Best 2013 rosette

1. Breville Stainless Steel Slow Cooker, £49.99

Rated a Mumsnet Best, this slow cooker is so popular it has sold out on Breville's website - but the good news is you can still buy it on Amazon. This is the 3.5l version, but larger options are also available. There is some debate on the optimal size of slow cookers, with most Mumsnetters agreeing bigger is better, but bodiddly says: "For daily use, the 3.5l is more than big enough - I do batch cooks in it for the freezer."

Tesco SCSS12 3L Slow Cooker

2. Tesco SCSS12 3L Slow Cooker, £15

This own-brand slow cooker is a bargain option at just £15, but Mumsnetters' reviews show that low price does not mean low quality; anchovies describes it as "just the job". Its three different heat settings are particularly commended.

Crock-Pot 5.7L Slow Cooker3. Crock-Pot Sauté Countdown Slow Cooker, £64.24

This 5.7l slow cooker isn't cheap, but Mumsnetters rate classic slow cooker brand Crock-Pot for its endurance. GlaikitHasHerFizzBack says: "I have never over-cooked anything in it and its still going strong after having it for four years!" It's also much bigger than the others, designed to serve up to five people but would probably do more.

Crock-Pot Sauté Traditional Slow Cooker4. Crock-Pot Sauté Traditional Slow Cooker, £55

Another Crock-Pot, this 4.7l cauldron-like slow cooker is perfect for rustling up something hot and nourishing to feed hungry trick-or-treaters. Yankeedoddlenic raves about it, saying: "I love and highly recommend it. Plus as the bowl is a ceramic, good quality one, you can even put this in the oven or hob."
