Just another Mumsnet.com weblog
Welcome to my blog - posted on January 30 2008 at 4:50 pm by samanthasmythe

Hi, this is my first ever blog and it does, I think, need a certain bit of explanation. My name is Lucy Cavendish and I am the author of what will be a trilogy of books about a modern mother called Samantha Smythe. She is my alter-ego, the woman I live with almost every hour of the day. At the moment, I am not sure where Samantha starts and I end so……the point is, I am going to write this blog as Samantha Smythe. I am not sure what format it will take. I am not sure who we will hear from - maybe Samantha’s eccentric but kindly sister Julia will turn up, or her best friend Dougie might post some recipes. Dougie, it has to be said, is a phenomenal cook. But, for the time being, it is me, Lucy Cavendish author and journalist, being Samantha Smythe, a harrassed mother of three demanding and active boys with a lovely husband called John (the Second) and a not-so-nice former husband also called John (the First).
I hope Samantha will be able to act as an everywoman - as the mother/wife/lover/person most of us are in our daily lives. Anything goes on this blog! Please feel free to comment back otherwise I can see myself going on some long journey into a void. If you want Samantha to comment on a topic, please do say. It can be on anything really - from something newsworthy to how to keep chickens. You never know where this might go! But, for now….please read on.

Are you the Slummy Mummy from The Sunday Times’ Style magazine? The one with her skirt tucked in her knickers?

If you live in the countryside as I do in southern Germany, then go and dig up a chunk of your lawn, throw packets of seeds into it and wait for them to grow. If like me you end up with mounds of veg but zero idea what to with them then you need to buy Jamie Oliver’s Jamie At Home book. Although he is a bit irritating - there seem to be more pics of him than recipes - I still have huge respect for him as he has helped me really get into cookery.

    Hi there,

If you live in the coluntryside then dig up your lawn, plant seeds then wait for them to grow. When you get fresh vegetables coming but perhaps like me no idea what to do with them then buy Jamie Olivers Jamie at Home book. He’s a bit irritating - there seem to be mroe poics of him than recipes - but I still respect him for what he has done for British food. He has helped to get me cooking proper food. My family eat freshly cooked veg almost every day.

Are you the Lucy Cavendish covered in flour and chocolate in this month’s Sainsbury’s magazine? Have you cleaned up yet?

I thought you have a newborn girl as well as three boys? She’s not in your intro. How newborn is she? MP X
