Our verdict

No matter how often you change your baby’s nappy or how well you clean their bum, there will be times when they will get nappy rash so make sure to have a good cream to hand that can help protect. • You only need a small amount so it can last a long time

What to know
  • Suitable from birth

A couple of things that I’d consider worth having from the start are Lansinoh nipple cream (in the purple tube) and Metanium (in the yellow tube) for any nappy rash. It’s not the all-the-time nappy cream, but it works wonders.
See Post
Our verdict

If your baby does end up with a nappy rash, you may want to turn to the big guns to get rid of it. Parents recommend Metanium for effectively treating it and it is suitable for use from birth, quickly clearing up the sore red rash caused by nappies. It doesn’t contain lanolin which will make it suitable for baby’s with an allergy to it. Make sure to follow the instructions though as you only need to apply a thin layer to the nappy area. The yellow coloured ointment can stain too so be careful when applying it.

I react to lots of bubble baths too. I keep pinching DD’s Child’s Farm stuff (she has eczema, but doesn’t react to that). I’m not sure I’m part of their intended customer base, but I don’t care.

In the early days with your newborn, you can spend a fortune on nappies alone. So if you can find a brand that provides good protection from leaks, is soft on your baby’s skin and is affordable it will help keep baby care costs down. Step forward Boots Baby Nappies Newborn - they cost around half the price of some of the other brands while still offering great value for money. They offer lots of the same features as other higher priced brands, such as the wetness indicator, which changes colour to let you know if your baby needs changing, and the nappies have been designed to quickly absorb and distribute wetness. With no perfume or lotion and made with soft, breathable material, the nappies shouldn’t irritate your baby’s delicate skin while providing a secure fit. • Absorbent and prevents leakages

  • Ideal for packing in your hospital bag

What to know
  • Great value

Key specs

Contains: 10 towels

I really liked Boots maternity pads and used them until the bleeding stopped. I would recommend buying 5 packs of 10 of the thicker ones (and take 2 packs to the hospital) and then see what you need after you've used those.
See Post
Our verdict

After you’ve given birth, you’ll need plenty of maternity pads for the postpartum bleeding. This pack of ten by Boots is a good size for packing in your hospital bag and there’s enough to get you through those first tired days and weeks with your baby.

Similar to a sanitary towel, the maternity pads are long and thick to prevent leakages and ensure you feel comfortable in the days following birth when the bleeding is heavier. You can then switch to the slim maternity towels when these are no longer needed. At 90p a pack they are also great value, and you can get an 10% off with Price Advantage at Boots.

Mama Mio nipple balm liberally after every feed for the first month or so!

Our verdict

With a newborn baby who needs to feed regularly, your nipples can take a bit of battering so keep a tube of the Mama Mio Keep Calm Nipple Balm nearby and you can quickly soothe them after a feed. It’s safe to use when breastfeeding so you don’t need to worry about your baby if they need to feed again soon after applying.

Made with a 100% natural oil and butter blend, the balm is fragrance, petroleum and lanolin-free so provides a soothing relief when nipples get a bit sore while still protecting your baby. A little should go a long way too - one Mumsnet user even said it’s nice for soothing dry lips - so you’ll get plenty of use for your money.

It might seem silly but when I was feeling really tight and uncomfortable the best cure was to lie down with a bump mask on (I used the My Little Coco bump sheet mask). In hindsight I was so tight because my skin was so dry!
See Post
Our verdict

There’s no better time to give yourself a little pampering than before your baby arrives. Just like a face mask can help soothe and revive your tired skin, My Little Coco Baby Mama Hydrating Bump Sheet leaves your bump feeling cleansed and hydrated.

As you get bigger, the skin around your bump can feel tighter so the mask gets to work using cooling aloe vera to hydrate your skin and rosehip to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Put your feet up and stick on your favourite TV show, read a book or simply enjoy the peace while the mask gets to work for 15-20 minutes. Then remove the mask and rub in any excess serum to your bump and hips.

I sprayed Spritz For Bits onto my maternity pads, worked absolute miracles after my episiotomy and other tear. Really great stuff!
See Post
Our verdict

After childbirth, you’re likely to be suffering some pain. Developed by midwives for just that reason, just spray on the area or onto a tissue to provide some cool relief. You can even stick it in the fridge for maximum soothing post childbirth. The spray contains natural essential oils, such as lavender and tea tree oil, and the dispenser even works upside down so you don’t have to get yourself in an awkward position to apply it. We like that it can also be used on C-section scars, too.

Fridamom do cooling pads for your vulva. You snap them then stick them in your pants. They are amazing!
See Post
Our verdict

This TikTok viral product is a maternity towel and ice pack in one. The FridaMom Instant Ice Maxi Pads are filled with ice chips so they provide a soothing relief from childbirth soreness. Simply crack the pad before securing it in place and it will provide 20 minutes of cooling therapy while also working as an absorbent maternity pad for postpartum bleeding.

The pad has been designed to soak up 260g of liquid so you don’t need to worry about leakages and it has a soft top layer to provide comfort. The pads are expensive though as you only get eight in a pack, so these are probably best saved for those early days after childbirth when you will need some extra relief.
