Girls' Rights and FGM

Hi ladies

In advance of tomorrow's Girls Summit, I wanted to invite you all to share/sign up for the Plan UK 'Because I am a Girl' campaign, as I believe it is an important one for parents everywhere to get behind.

FGM is such an emotive/uncomfortable subject that many shy away from discussing it on social media platforms as they believe it will be too distressing, but it's such an important one that I wanted to share it in as many places as possible. Mumsnet has a great history of discussing FGM so I thought this forum would be the perfect place to share the campaign.

You can watch the great video Plan UK made - - and then share with your friends and family, to ensure this incredibly important subject stays front of mind during a week when girls' rights will be all over the news.

Thanks for reading.

Alice walker's novel 'possessing the secret power of joy' is a colour purple sequel about fgm.

I recommend it.

There a thread in chat now about forced fgm for all women in Mosel following the Isis takeover.

Very interesting. A relative of mine has recently spoken for a local charity dealing with FGM- she herself was a victim. She asked us not to come for the talk and I think there needs to be more awareness- and less stigma.

That's heartbreaking VampireSquid, I'm sorry you know someone this has affected. And also that she felt it would be too difficult for you to attend.

I agree that there is far too much stigma around this issue - it's not as media friendly/shareable as or other social media campaigns as the thought of it is so horrific to most of us. I'm still sharing the video and Plan UK's campaign on a daily basis and am sure I've lost a few Facebook friends/Twitter followers as a result.
