Just setting this up while we finish off the last few posts on the old thread. Come in and pull up a bar stool!

Anyone fancy a truly depressing read?

jezebel article here about PUA hate groups

I'd like a very large glass of red wine please. Everything I touched today at work I broke (tbf it was probably broken before I just made it visibly broken). This resulted in two of my team spending the best part of a day trying to sort the ensuing chaos. Twice.

In addition there have been several stories today which have upset me.

Karen Ingala Smith has calculated that 11 women this month so far have been killed by male violence.

This scary story on so many levels about a disabled girl whose armpits were forcibly shaved in a classroom UN front of other girls.

And massive TW on this story from India about 2 teenage sisters who were horribly killed (involves gang rape amongst other things). 2 policemen have been arrested.

But yeah Elliot fucking Rodgers was an isolated bloke.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 29/05/2014 19:42

Oh, no. Sorry! Large glass of red coming up.

The story about the disabled girl is absolutely horrible. Why on earth would they do that?!

I'm getting really fed up with the 'isolated bloke' idea. And even more so with the 'well he was mental innit' angle. Yes, obviously he was. That does not make you a natural killer FFS!

I'm particularly angry about this because my lovely mate is in hospital with mental illness at the moment, and it is really, really shit. She doesn't get the support she needs when she is at home, yet obviously it's a better economic decision to admit her for weeks on end.

And if that's not enough, the staff where she is are on high alert because one of the male patients attacked someone else. I'm finding it extremely hard not to see it as more male violence screwing over women, TBH.

As part of the curriculum?! Confused

(Oh, and I'm fucked off with the ending of the Hunger Games trilogy, and I'm especially fucked off that, googling reviews, no-one else seems to be noticing what I think is a hugely disturbing bit. I am aware this is a minor issue but it's nagging at me!)

I might start a separate thread, whenthe, I think if we put spoilers on here they'll be too hard to avoid.

I have dinner guests tonight, though, so must go and be less full of feministy rage.

I spent this morning wedding dress shopping with my mate, which was lovely and touching and she's beautiful and looked amazing ... but I am, perversely, feeling great need for some feminist chat so will probably be back later tonight. Smile

Oh, excellent, I've been meaning to catch one of these threads from the start. Mind if I lurk in a corner?

Sure! But don't lurk, post! Grin

Btw I love your name.

Add me to the list of people who have found FWR, and MN in general, enlightening.

Gods! The thing about the girl in Vic is horrendous!

LRD sorry about your friend. I used to work in the field, if there's any help I can offer, just ask.... not sure what use I would be, but if I can help, I will.

CaptChaos · 29/05/2014 20:14

Oh, and I'm on the 'enlightened by FWR' list too.

StormyBrid · 29/05/2014 20:18

Much enlightening thanks to FWR here too. Five years ago I didn't want to be associated with feminism because of the hairy legged lesbian stereotype. I credit this place with helping me grow up a bit (and also with expanding my book collection).

And thanks, LRD, but I can't really take the credit - half of it was my mum's choice and the other half's from Doctor Who.

Sorry about your mate LRD. I'm inclined to be with you about men fucking over women even in that arena Sad

Only read the 1st Hunger Games which I enjoyed (not sure enjoyed is quite the right word) despite it being about children being killed for pleasure. There were lots of parallels with oppressive structures we see in our world. And there wasn't much discrimination against women.

And yes the girl being shaved episode is just awful. They originally said it was done so she wouldn't be bullied. The school abdicating responsibility for dealing with bullying there then.

I've been thinking a lot this week about how things have changed since I was a student in the 80s, mostly in relation to the Euro/Council elections and the rise of UKIP, but also in relation to a lot of other stuff in the news.

It occurred to me that, in the UK at least, we seem to be in a post-ideological era in which increasingly few people think politically any more. There are precious few big ideas articulated in public life and the media, and certainly not complex ones. Analysing our society in any fundamental way is out of fashion.

I think that a large part of why it is so hard to discuss feminism, which is essentially a very political way of seeing and challenging society and gender. So the murderer, the disabled girl, all these stories, are discussed as isolated and relating to individuals (which isn't always wrong, just limited). It's very frustrating.

scallopsrgreat · 29/05/2014 21:27

I agree Denzel. I think that's why hashtags such as #YesAllWomen are so important and forums like this. They start joining those dots.

The link Really put up does a similar thing. Showing that Rodgers was neither isolated nor an isolated incident. There are many men like that out there. He was formed by a culture.

Good point, Denzel. Can I sneak into a corner and have a stiff brandy? I'm still in shock from the TERF thread - and I don't feel I can keep going on it and posting, "But this is utterly nonsensical, I'm in shock" because a) it would be boring to keep telling everyone that and b) other posters are discussing the nonsensical shockingness of it all far more articulately so my nonsensical shocked expession will stand out too much.

Sips brandy in stunned, shocked silence.

Thankyou.

I lurked on the TERF thread for about a minute then walked away.

Did anyone see the C4 report tonight about the young woman killed by her relatives in Lahore? The husband killed his first wife so he could marry her.

Well, it's called TERF! I won't go on about it if Kim has hidden it as that wouldn't be fair - plus it would involve me coming out of stunned, shocked silence, which I don't think I've had enough brandy for yet, so just go and read it and then see if it has the same effect on you, Denzel.

And, yes, also agog at yet another week of murder and mayhem for women across the globe.

Anyone watching Question Time? I feel like the sexism wouldn't have been called out last week. #yesallwomen is working it's magic

Report
LRDtheFeministDragon · 29/05/2014 23:35

Ohh ... I clicked this thread expecting your post to be about sexism being depressing (cos usually that's what Question Time is). I've not seen it but so glad it was positive. Smile

capt - thank you very much, appreciate the offer as I'm sure she would. I was just sounding off really as I am angry.
