To counterbalance the 'films which just annoy you', and to give GarlicReverses some good recommendations. Since she asked for action movies and political intrigue here are my starters:

Nothing But the Truth
The Hunger Games
FoxFire
Lore

Gravity - first I thought, great a female protagonist, then I thought oh arse, she needs George Clooney to help her do anything, and then I thought, actually no she does it herself. So on balance, yay.

Oh and the Sound of Music! 'Whistles are for dogs and cats but not for children and certainly not for me' and 'I am not finished yet, Captain!' Awesome stuff.

Lara croft
9to 5
Practical magic
Buffy the vampire slayer film
First wives club

There is a great drama series from a few years ago that is available on 4od, it's called Big Women. It's about the setting up of a feminist publishing house in the 70s, following the women until the mid-90s. Lots of good actresses, men are the bit parts, very refreshing.

The sad thing is that I can't think of any which haven't already been mentioned...there should be more.

The Heat- I maybe never laughed so hard in my life.

Juno, I know some people think it's anti feminist because the main character has the baby and not an abortion, but actually in America it can be difficult to get an abortion and many women get tricked by "crisis centers" etc and there are more women being forced to have babies than would do so if abortion were a free easy option.. SO I think they did the right thing in having her have the baby and then showing the aftermath of a young girl having a child and giving it away.

Whipit is awesome.

Also enjoyed First Wives club.

Would 'The Kids Are Alright' count? I loved the film and 'the kids' do have two female parents as well as seeking their biological dad. Julianne Moore and Annette Bening are fab in it.

Thelma and Louise isn't really feminist as the main characters after running off die in the end, the ultimate punishment.

I'm looking forward to checking out Big Women later, thanks.

The Nasty Girl

There must be others.

I shouldn't say Soapdish but I will. It doesn't seek to Explore the Issues like Tootsie did, but there are lots and lots of female characters which means that none of them has to embody anything in particular, they can just get on with being funny. I do like Tootsie as well but for a film that's supposed to be about female experience it only really has one female character. Also, Sally Field and Kevin Kline were [GASP] born in the same year.

Highbrows. That is only if you view death as punishment, to be feared. I don't.

Made in Dagenham.

Hm, difficult to think of more.

Legally Blonde and Erin Brockevich could be seen in a feminist light I guess.

Brave is supposed to be pretty good too, but I haven't seen it.
