women play at Wimbledon as well as the men! Lashings of praise for Murray, Federer et al but no mention of Sharapova win or any other women's result for that matter.

'Twas ever thus

It is depressing isn't it? And it's one of those things I never noticed so much until I started getting interested in feminism and now I notice it all the time. It is subtle and we are conditioned to accept that sport is primarily about men.

Someone on here called it the 'homo' gaze as opposed to the male gaze.

Bloody Murray! He's a right misery guts anyway my telly finds him offensive.

I know it's OT but Andy Murray is lovely! I've met him several times and he couldn't have been nicer. He just suffers from Resting Bitch Face. As do I. When I smile I look like I'm in pain, so I don't bother unless it happens involuntarily.

I like this Charlie Brooker article about Andys non-smiling face www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/jul/08/andy-murray-not-miserable-just-normal

But it does piss me off that the press only seem intereested in women's tennis when they can report on an alleged feud. They delight in perpetuating the myth that all male tennis players get on great and all female tennis players are at each others throats.

As an ex player and lifelong tennis fan I agree about the way women's tennis is treated as secondary. But I cannot bear to watch Sharapova or Azarenka. Their screeching is like someone slamming a door on a cat's tail and way beyond the male grunting.

Why the fuck can't tennis authorities bring in a rule that penalises it? It borders on gamesmanship as it totally obliterates the sound of the ball on the strings, thus diminishing the chance of the opponent spotting how much slice and spin the ball is being hit with.

Maybe too late to stop the current crop of screechers but it could be done for youngsters coming up.

I like Murray though

Azarenka is the worst in that respect for me, because of the hooting! Grunting/screaming I can understand, but hearing 'hoooo' everytime she hits the ball is maddening because it sounds so unnatural!

I'm not seeing how "screeching" Hmm stops the BBC reporting on women's tennis.

I like Murray too. He's much maligned and a far nicer person in "real life" than his court persona. Anyone see the documentary about him Sunday night?

The only time I seem to see anything in the press about women's tennis is when its a report about someone's personal life, style of dress or as mentioned above feuds. I agree, tis v depressing.

I play tennis quite a lot (not as much as I would like) I don't hoot, scream or screech. Tennis is quite boring to watch now, they are all base line players. Bring back Navratilova & Novotná.

It's not just tennis though is it.

When did you last hear what is happening in women's football, volleyball, boxing, darts

I know that a few years ago our national women's netball team won the world championships in great syle, but it wasn't really mentioned in the media, except for a well deserved double page spread in Grazia magazine.

I wish they would let them play 5 sets.

So do I Kasey and so do a lot of the women. Billie Jean King has certainly fought for it.

The England netball team had a historic win really recently and didn't even get a mention on BBC or radio (5 live briefly covered it)

I actually complained to Radio 1 News Beat (given that their listeners are young female, and netball is very popular amongst them) and got a response from the Producer apologising (blaming the morning news reporters for "forgetting" to include). It was included the next day at every news point and they put it on Facebook too to discuss their achievement.

It still didn't get the coverage it deserved and me complaining about it on my Facebook resulted in so called banter jokes about women in sports not being interesting (it was great for my blood pressure you can imagine Angry)

Complain about it - use twitter or email BBC news reporters.

Why are sports women missed out?

Annoyed the way they rattle on about it being 76 years since a British wimbledon winner. So Virginia Wades 1977 win doesn't count then?

Report
TheDoctrineOfAllan · 29/06/2013 08:18

Yes, meddie, also Jonny Marray in the doubles last year and Jamie Murray in the mixed a few years ago.

Ferraro1 - keep your porn stars. Protest for equal pay for them or get rid of porn for all I care. As for tennis, the WTA offered to play 5 sets but this was declined.

Now why don't you go and address the rest of the pay gap, you know in the areas that affect the vast majority of us. Or does that not swing in the direction you would like.

And what does this have to do anyway with the coverage on BBC? Or did you just come on here to teach us all a lesson?

yes well when youve likely got hundeds of men clamoring to do the job free it's going to knock wages down isnt it?

Report
TabithaStephens · 29/06/2013 18:35

There aren't any British female tennis stars of the standard of Andy Murray. Hopefully Laura Robson will change this.

I don't think any horny bloke would want to do it for free, no.

But male porn stars (if in heterosexual films) run less chance of infection, anal fissures etc.

Report
TheDoctrineOfAllan · 29/06/2013 19:24

Back to the topic - bear in mind that apart from the grand slams and maybe a couple of other tournaments, the men play three sets too.

Are all tournaments "equal pay" or just the slams?
