Three cheers for Glamour magazine!

Anyone read their article on rape in the latest issue? I just read it and thought it was brilliant personally - it included a lot of the facts and figures, quotes and campaigns I've seen mentioned around here (including the anti-rape tips for men), and did some great challenging of rape myths. Not surprisingly, a lot of it was quite depressing, but needs to be talked about. Ironic that a magazine called "Glamour" is giving better coverage of a serious topic than many newspapers and supposedly more "heavyweight" magazines seem to!

I don't think the article's on their website, but I would encourage you to get hold of a copy (plus it comes with free fancy makeup this month Wink). I have told DH he should read it, though not sure he actually will...

I don't work for them, by the way - honest!

Yes ive read it. Brilliant article.
Another great ironic touch is in the same issue. If you read the interview with Myleene Klass she talks about when Piers Morgan came up to her at last years Glamour awards and said "You are too thin" then walked off. So also a great example of the mysogyny and "ownership" of womens bodies that permeates society that seems to make it ok for mysogynists like Morgan to make personal comments. The same kind of mysogyny that leads to rape myths.
I also think the examples included in the article on rape were wide ranging and covered everything really well. The figures are staggering.

Well done Zoe Williams Bloody good job.

Well good for them Smile

Always pleased when there is a sensible piece about this type of topic in the press esp areas where you might not expect it. Having said that I don't read Glamour, maybe it often has good stuff Smile

Here are the figures from said article. Over a period when there were 5,651 prosecutions for rape there were 35 prosecutions for making false accusations of rape.
In other words leaving aside all the rapes that are never reported an estimated 89% of them, even leaving aside the rapes for which there is insufficient proof the number of convicted rapists absolutely dwarfs the number of women making untrue claims. For every one woman who "cries rape" 161 men have been convicted of rape in a court of law and a further 1,302 men have committed a rape for which they will never be punished.
This is from the Glamour article but the figures are from Keir Starmer the DPP

darkesteyes - I think we have to be careful with these figures - 5,651 prosecutions does not mean 5,651 convictions or guilty men. Just because a woman is not prosecuted for false accusations does not mean they weren't false.
The CPS will not bring a prosecution unless they are fairly sure of a conviction (one reason so many cases do not reach court as there is unfortunately too little evidence of rape rather than sex)
A claim of rape does not necessarily mean rape, although most statistics assume there is.
Around 60% of rape prosecutions succeed, in line with other violent crimes here

Then you had better address that to Keir Starmer because they are his figures.

So whats with the "we"

Also included in the article is Rape:A World View. Very eye opening and very sad.
Eg -Morocco- Rapists of underage girls here can avoid conviction by marrying their victim.

"tampering with evidence "

I'm not sure if that's more offensive to the woman wanting an abortion or the child eventually born of of it Angry

surely DNA testing can be done on the fetus after an abortion anyway or am I misunderstanding?

In this months issue there are a couple of responses to this article on the letters page.
A young woman who wrote in to them got victim blamed by her own mum.
