Just read Gold's article www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/nov/16/twilight-not-feminist-sado-masochism in today's Guardian. I haven't actually read any of the Twilight novels, nor the 50 Shades, but had heard before that Twilight series v sexist, and usually agree wholeheartedly with TG's comments. Any thoughts? (can't remember how to do hyperlinks, sorry)

This link should work -

Twilight is not feminist: it's female masochism

Going to read article now.....

I agree with the broad idea but she isn't as well informed as she should be. The subtitle for the article makes it sound like Twilight is 'inspired by' 50 Shades when it is the other way around. Plus she makes the common mistake of assuming that Bella herself shies away from having sex when it is fact Bella who is keen to do it and Edward who is reluctant. All this is still part of his control and the whole thing is female masochism, but I wish that people who write about Twilight would take as much care with the details as they would with other things. It's as if when something is massively popular, arguments against aren't felt to need the same attention to detail.

It has also been said before, and quite often now, by others. However, there's no harm in making the point again.

Agree with points the Gold is making.

And agree Snazzy's point about Bella being keener on having sex than Edward. I got about halfway through the last book - I remember Bella telling Edward that it was absolutely fine that he'd covered her with bruises and that they should have lots more sex anyway Hmm
