Women's Music CHAT THREAD

InmaculadaConcepcion · 27/02/2012 18:41

I've been nattering away off-topic on Stewie's excellent thread asking for suggestions for her International Women's Day CD...so thought I would start an ongoing thread for anyone who, like me particularly enjoys music by female artists and female-fronted bands.

I'm not looking for lists of recommendations - there are two threads called Music By Women which have dozens of brilliant suggestions of artists to check out.

This is more about sharing a recent discovery (artist doesn't have to be new, though!) - a song, album, band, singer/songwriter etc. etc. that have inspired or excited you and you want to share. Or to chew the cud about anything related to women's music that catches your interest. Please join in!

So, to start, I've been hugely enjoying Beth Jeans Houghton's new album Yours Truly Cellophane Noise - although I'm a bit Hmm about <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=beth+jeans+houghton+yours+truly+cellophane+nose&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1280&bih=666&tbm=isch&tbnid=5yR0YTQZakPMHM:&imgrefurl=www.thelineofbestfit.com/2012/02/beth-jeans-houghton-and-the-hooves-of-destiny-yours-truly-cellophane-nose/&docid=gY7ObtEr8U1uhM&imgurl=www.thelineofbestfit.com/wp-content/media/2012/02/beth-jeans-houghton-yours-truly-cellophane-nose.jpg&w=500&h=500&ei=ss5LT4mDENG78gP1_KSTDg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=365&vpy=143&dur=2015&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=140&ty=88&sig=105034893059660009265&page=1&tbnh=152&tbnw=152&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0" rel="nofollow noindex" target="_blank">the artwork on the album cover. Not sure what to make of it.

Yep, I'd agree with that Stewie. I love her music, but not quite sure what kind of image she's trying to promote.

When I've heard her interviewed she comes across as quite a thoughtful, intellectual person. Quite at odds with the more risque pictures etc. that are out there of her.

You don't have to know squat about music Smile Just being interested is good enough for me!!! It's just lovely to have other people to chat to about it.

Ooh, Lucy Ward is a new one on me. I'll have to check her out.

I had Thea Gilmore's first four or five albums (she's amazingly prolific!) but haven't really listened to her stuff since Harpo's Ghost. I wonder if becoming a mother (of two now - I think she fairly recently had her second DC) has infiltrated her songwriting?

Speaking of which, I mentioned in the other thread a song about childbirth that I always find rather moving (albeit quite quirky) - here it is:

Cool! I rather like what I've heard of Sleater Kinney too.

Lucy Ward - nice! Very influenced by June Tabor, by the sound of things. Maddy and The Girls (Maddy Prior plus Rose Kemp and one other) do a rather good version of A Stitch In Time too. I do enjoy a bit of female folk music, I must say.

I'll have to go and check out Thea Gilmore's more recent stuff on Spotify - looks like everything she's done is on there.
I met her a few years back, she was very likeable.

I'm off to bed now, but here's
Enjoy!

I added this to the other Music By Women thread but I'm feeling a bit evangelical about her - Susanne Sundfør. Only discovered her this morning but went straight out to iTunes and bought one of her albums.

I really like This Is The Kit, I saw them (her) play in Paris in about 2006, she was the support act but was WAY better than the main event.

My work is related to the music industry so I get a lot of info on new artists from press releases and colleagues... and I like to chat about music.

Ooh, good to have you aboard MoChan! And thanks for the tip!
I love the videos of This Is The Kit on YouTube where Kate and Jesse are recording the song and their toddler is wandering around doing toddler things while they do it - including twanging the odd banjo string in passing
Quite a few of the songs on Wriggle Out The Restless sound like they were inspired in some way by Kate and Jesse's daughter.

And another interesting tip, Stewie! I also enjoy music by various "world" artists (for want of a better description). The other album I got recently was Fatou by Fatoumata Diawara, who's from Mali. Really lovely stuff.

I have a feeling this thread may be bad for my bank balance Smile

Incidentally, if you like This Is The Kit, Mo, have you checked out Whalebone Polly, Kate Stables' other band (co-fronted with Rachael Dadd)? It's a mixture of Kate and Rachael's songwriting and harmonies.
There's a fair amount of overlap with their solo stuff, but the combination is lovely....

I posted on the other thread, but can I mention Nicola Roberts again not that I'm obsessed or anything

I really wasn't expecting much, but was persuaded by this review. She has the buds of some great feminist understanding going on, just needs to hang out on here a bit. Grin

and . Note the female musicians, it's something I've seen her with a lot not that I looked through a load of you tube videos honest Those two are less quirky than some of the other stuff on the album.

was in the pop parade I believe. Love that she's talking about love dancing to the beat of her drum, rather than wailing about how she loves being abused.

Of course there's plenty of the usual crap going on around her, as expected. But I'm finding her interesting.

I've been just listening to music by women for a while. And trying to find current acts to focus on, particularly young women, as a way of supporting that voice. I keep intending to download Janelle Monae cos she looks very cool.

I can do a good 90s riot grrl talk too honest, but at the moment my focus is on current young women's voices, that buck the trend (even slightly)

Someone at work put First Aid Kit on Spotify and I'm enjoying them: Swedish folk duo, sisters. (Ahem, I mean, they are sisters, I'm not addressing you all as 'sisters' Grin)

Ooh, thanks TBE - I'll check Wild Flag out!

....and Nicola Roberts, Alice. Cheers for the links!

Ooh, yes Lio - First Aid Kit. I heard them do a couple of live tracks on 6Music - like their songs. The Emmylou single that's out at the moment is a smashing little ditty.

Loving the recommendations, more please!!

I have to say, although I find Marc Riley rather irritating as a presenter, he's clearly a lover of female vocals, he plays a lot of female-fronted stuff and gets a lot of them in live, too. I've discovered some wonderful stuff when listening to his programme. Credit where it's due, etc.

I noticed when I listen to Lauren Laverne on bbc6 there was plenty of women's voices.

I have downloaded First Aid Kit. What is with all the Kits?
