Shopping in Kingston. Cold, rainy and miserable.

Then I saw this small group of lads - about 17ish - doing some public speaking guerilla stylee.

When I first passed, one of them was talking (with a mic) about the genius of Justin Beiber and the evils of listening to any kind of music that hadn't been approved by Radio 1 Grin He was very, very funny.

Next another lad was talking about the dangers of drugs... unless they had been taxed, then they were fine.

Finally one of them started talking about the media, things like the Sun and the objectification of women! Ds needed to pee so had to hurry but really wanted to hang around and listen some more.

I was so impressed with their confidence and intelligence and felt so proud of these young kids who, as far as i could tell, for no other reason than feeling strongly about thigs, got out there and spoke their minds. And they did in a humorous, warm and charming way.

I was BEAMING!

So so happy that we have young people like this who arent fooled by the shit that surrounds us.

Their mums would ahve been dead proud. I know I was.

:-) How fabulous!

And to think I went round Virginia Water (wow, there are some posh dogs out there) instead of Kingston this morning.

I was thinking about starting a 'things that made me happy' thread the other day, when some random feminist event happened, but then I forgot what it was. Good to have a thread re the good too though. A little bit of sunshine.

It really was fab!

So easy to get bogged down in all the crap, and feel like our young people are being messed up before they've even had a chance to see whats what... but obviously worth remembering that there are some really smart kids about who are willing to stand up and speak their minds.

guerilla style public speaking - what an amazing thing to do!
I am very impressed with teenagers sometimes.

Sounds great! I was going to start a similar happy things thread, but realised it would just deteriorate into me going all misty eyed like some pathetic wuss whenever I see anyone female, from an ethnic minority, or openly gay succeeding in life. I think Julie Burchill wrote once that some women (Mariella for instance, IIRC) make her want to punch the air with joy and pride. I just feel like that about anyone from a group historically (and currently) subject to discrimination.

Teenagers and children are amazing, aren't they. We've got it all so backward. "Respect your elders" was just made up by some grey-heads.
Respect young people and society will sort itself out in the end.

I don't mean idolise young people, media-stylee, just simple respect, the kind we all deserve.

Just watched A Dangerous Place to Meet My Family where a 19 year old goes to visit his family in Yemen. Worth watching when it goes on iPlayer for positive teenage stuff and there's some great feminist talking points in there from him too. Brilliant programme (as was the midwife one on earlier in the same series.)

Oh yyy Sakura

Someone on here once alluded to the fifth commandment as the root of all bad parenting. (I think it's the fifth - Honour Your Father and Your Mother).

There is no commandment to nurture, love, protect your children. Patriarchy demands respect, love, obedience from children and nothing from parents, when we all know that the responsibility and obligation is exactly the other way around and in a sane world would be.

My word, HerBeX, you are so, so right! I ahve thought this for so long, and often said that the reason I'm not a Christian is because the way 'God' 'parents' is the total opposite to what DH and I believe as good parenting!

He's a bloody horrible, abusive father - 'love me even though I do horrible things to you, and trust that one day you'll be grateful' - WTF!? Confused
