God Not A Bloke Horror

Just read at Shakesville that the Scottish Episcopal Church is producing an alternative service where references to God as "he", "Lord" etc are replaced with gender neutral terms.

(Story in Daily Fail not surprisingly but quoted here

Good eh? My local vicar proudly admits to sneaking in the odd "she" instead of "he", and tries to alternate. :o

I think that's lovely. I especially like "Creator, Redeemer and Sanctifier." God truly does transcend gender.

I like it too, do not go to church but vicar does a lot of other events and it made me really happy to hear him say that god is male and female, that we are all in "her image" etc. Great that a whole church is doing it.

LOL, I am currently having a lot of arguments with my 3yo about this.
DD claims that school tell her God is a man so I have advised her to discuss it directly with the vicar next time she comes (CofE school) - I imagine she is more likely to be familiar with the concept of a God who transcends gender than the teachers are.

God isn't a bloke. Neither is he a woman. Mainly becuase he doesn't exist.

Assuming that* people are going to worship something though, seeyoukay, don't you think it may as well be gender-neutral, instead of the deity being in man's (and not in woman's) image? As it stands, God has been cast as a father-figure... talk about patriarchy, eh? Wink

  • because otherwise it's a whole other argument.

Gods can take on what ever body image they like just as long as it doesn't involve me.

I think the bigger argument other than arguing about the gender image of deitys is whats better.

Someone who worships God as a man but won't accept God could be a woman or someone who doesn't worship a god at all?
