Anyone see this article in yesterday's Standard? Well worth a read, and mentions a new book: Delusions of Gender by Cordelia Fine. Has anyone heard anything about it?

I really get the feeling that there is a big upswing in interest in feminism and womens issues at the moment, does anyone else feel that?

Or is it just that talking to people on this topic, and being pointed to relevant articles and things, makes it feel like that?

ISNT - did you see this comment? "It's always amusing to me how emotional men get when they're told that the stereotypes they're so invested in believing aren't true. And how they obsessively leave comments on any and every blogpost and article that dares state that maybe those stereotypes aren't true. I suggest we call this condition "testeria.""

Think I love this Daisy person.

I spluttered at the article she mentioned: "one paper declared that girls ?may be naturally less inclined to study maths and physics at A-level than boys?" - ah yes that well known A level gene Hmm Hmm Hmm

Looks interesting, will give it a try. I also read Anne Fausto-Sterling's 'Myths of Gender' a while ago, recommend that one too if you're interested in these issues.

Interesting how so many of these things that 'everyone knows' are true just disappear when you look for actual evidence...

I think there's an upswing too, at least among the women students I know. Hooray!

Thanks for letting me know about that book elephants, I have just ordered it off amazon. I love evolutionary psychology, it is such a nice neat excuse reason for the gender roles as they have been defined today. I have had a barney debate with my FIL about it though which I managed to close with '....of course it's totally unprovable' which seemed to shut him up!

That book looks great.
I know lots of evolutionary biologists and they don't have much truck with evolutionary psychology. It's completely untestable. Science fail.

"science fail" I love the permeation of lolcats into everyday speech :o

Maybe we should rename the section "Women's Rights and Testeria"

I'm so much looking forward to the next time some helpful chap wanders in in a tizzy - "calm down dear, no need to be testerical"
